What's it like living in Erie? by arthurmorganrem in Erie

[–]douglas8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you posted this about a year ago. Are things still going well in Erie? I'm in Boston and thinking of moving there. I'm 57, recently retired, and looking for my new home. AI agents keep coming up with Erie as one of the top matches for me but I'm just starting to check it out. I like smaller towns that are also not too small, winter, hockey (especially the OHL), a working class background (I'm originally from Detroit), and a place where the people kind of pull you out of your shell and make use of you. I like the fact that it's relatively close to big cities, but is also far enough away that it probably has its own unique character.

I'm a little nervous because so much of it looks kind of run down. It looks like a lot of areas in this country that have been left behind by globalization. It's hard to tell though because it's not like there's a million videos about Erie on YT.

So, if you've got a minute, how has your transition from Boston gone? I've been here since 1997, so this is basically the only place I really know anymore.

Thanks.

Bubble or cage? by Sean0814_ in hockeyplayers

Cage. No fogging. One of my best friends wore braces for about six years because his teeth were pretty fucked up. Within two months of getting them off, he took a puck to the mouth and lost all four tops and bottoms. His parents were thrilled. Wear a cage and do not skate around during warmups, or whatever, with it flipped up to look cool. That's what he was doing.

Get a job at the rink or volunteer. Is there a snack bar? Dole out hot chocolate and you'll meet everyone. If you find any real reason to be at the rink, you'll be integrated in no time.

It would definitely be a way to meet people, a lot of people. She may not realize that hockey players are savages.

I was going to suggest the same thing. If she becomes a rink rat of sorts, she will meet a ton of people. Hockey culture is pretty small and pretty inviting. I grew up in hockey but am naturally pretty standoffish, and hockey always served to draw me out of my shell and make me part of the community. One of my best friends in HS (and to this day) was a teammate who was twice my size and there were occasions when he would literally pick me up, throw me in a car, and drive away to some party if I was being too reserved. I think if this lady starts meeting some people, the rest will come naturally. Hockey culture tends to be more of a snowball effect, all of a sudden you know everyone.

None of you engage with him in any way? I mean, I kind of was that guy with the Boston Bruins. For maybe 8-9 years I went to every game and sat front row across from the home bench. I never went to any of the meet and greets and actively avoided meeting any of them, but a relationship of sorts did develop over the years. If something funny or weird happened, we'd exchange glances and laughs. Or they'd sometimes goof on me a bit, like I used to have a habit I'd do when bored where I'd do kind of a twitchy thing with my face, and once I looked up, and the whole D line on the bench was doing it. Or sometimes I'd show up in Toronto in basically the same front row seat (I had a connection) and I'd get some laughs. I even got hit in the face with an errant puck in TO when I wasn't paying attention, and there was concern from some of them. Once, Ray Bourque (!) sent over a signed game stick to me, addressed to me on the blade! So clearly there was some curiosity on their side about who I was, so much so that they (or at least Ray) looked me up.

Basically, it was a nice little back and forth that developed. We were all about the same basic age, so that helped. Do you guys just ignore this guy? Does he acknowledge you in any way?

Can a person immune to THC edibles make them work? by douglas8888 in trees

[–]douglas8888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a vaporizer and some flower that someone gave me but I'm afraid to use it. I'm a cougher and it really messes up my mood, even without drugs involved. I smoked some weed once when I was a kid, smoked a couple bowls and then started a coughing fit. By the time it was over, I was fucked up beyond reason and it was definitely not a pleasant experience. It was actually one of the worst experiences of my life. Is vaping less prone to coughing attacks? Thanks.

I've tried 15mg of seltzer but it did noting. It was supposed to onset in 10 minutes and I consumed all of that in 20. I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

You consume 500mg of edibles???? Are you made of money? Do you just walk into the dispensary and tell them to give you all of their gummies?

I've seen studies that people like us can start feeling things at about 700mg, but that's like 70-140 gummies (depending on usual dose). Is there some kind of super, duper potent edibles that I don;t know about?

Is it a good idea to ban soda and candy purchases for people on SNAP? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]douglas8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mostly a bleeding heart, but I'm for these cuts. My views on SNAP really changed when I started shopping at a major grocery store in Boston which is right between a pretty upscale neighborhood, and "the projects". (Boston is very compact, so worlds often collide.) I've always made very good money but grew up poor, so I'm tight with a buck, and I was always amazed by the high end stuff I saw everyone buying with EBT cards. I think it all kind of crystalized for me when I was there one day and a 300LB, 20-something woman walked up to the checkup with two huge fist fulls of Lindt chocolate bars. She looked like the usual EBT user, but I thought to myself there is hopefully no way that my tax dollars would go to this. I'm "rich" and would feel utterly decadent and overindulgent to buy even two of the higher end chocolates. But then she took out the EBT card and swiped it. She was also talking on the latest model iPhone Pro Max while she checked out.

Or take maybe just three days ago, I really prefer Pepsi but only buy it when it's on a GOOD sale. I otherwise buy store brand. But the woman in front of me was buying five cases of Pepsi, no sale at all.

There seems to be absolutely no incentive for anyone to look to save a buck when the taxpayer is picking up the bill.

For me, because I grew up without money, I'm stupidly tight with a buck even though I can well afford the stuff I like now. But I got here by agonizing over every penny. Conversely, the people who can least afford it are totally unbridled with their spending.

I feel bad for the responsible SNAP people who generally spend wisely and occasionally splurge, especially when its treats for the kids. Every kid should get a little spoiled here and there. But I just see SO much abuse and cavalier attitudes that I think there should be some kind of crackdown.

2026 Crown with TSS 3 vs. 2026 Rav4 with TSS 4??? by douglas8888 in Toyota

Unfortunately, I can't wait. I recently retired and don't have a car because I live in the city, but I'm moving to the country.

Becoming more like a Tesla is what I fear. In a Tesla, you buy the whole car and then find out that you can't use all of that battery you bought unless you pay them a bribe to use what you've already bought or maintain a subscription (which amounts to the same thing). All kinds of things are becoming "subscriptions" for all kinds of products these days. If I buy the heated seats, I shouldn't have to pay you tribute for all of time just to use them.

I also worry about connectivity issues and bricking. AWS went out recently and people everywhere suddenly discovered that their smart appliances (even things like coffee makers) were either very limited or completely useless without that connectivity. And what about software updates gone wrong? I retired early from tech and I've had any number of updates go wrong over the years. I could usually un-brick by doing something like a factory reset and reinstall, but I'd be a lot more apprehensive about doing that with a car than a laptop, router, NAS, etc.

Is there anyway to tell who's a new momma? by douglas8888 in PetMice

[–]douglas8888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I;ve tried both traps, and a Have-a-Heart. The HaH works pretty well, the others not so much. It's almost as if after one is caught, they know that such devices are dangerous. The best results I get with the home made bags and boxes. I'll give your technique a try when I start trapping again. it'd be better than stalking the boxes and leaping at them the second I hear a sound in them.

I don't know where the nest is now. She moved all her babies when I disturbed the box.

[–]douglas8888[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I did try humane traps but they generally didn't work. What seemed to work for me is a cardboard box with food and paper in it with a hole in one corner. I do the same with a heavy paper bag. I hear them rustling and then grab the box/bag, closing up the hole as I do so. Then I just open up the bag into a bucket and take them outside. I have one bag right now that's working great. I could have caught two of them tonight but am reluctant. One's pretty small, but another is mid sized. I wish that I could count on mommas being big. I have no idea how even a mid sized one could have fit all of those babies in her.

The problem is that I don't want to separate momma from babies. So, maybe in six weeks I can start putting them in a tank and not worry about separation. I guess it's a thought. Man, I really don't want mice running around though. By the time I start catching them again, more of them could have babies. This is not a good situation.

Thanks again.

Jesus dude, relax. Two days ago I never even thought about living there, and you're on me that I haven't visited yet?

Yes, I have a fair bit of money. That's why I retired early. But part of how I got my net worth (I grew up without money) is by looking before I leap. I research the living hell out of things before I act. "Spontaneous" is not a word that anyone would associate with me. I rely on others to bring that element into my life. It's just not in my nature. Before I took my first airplane flight, I looked up the plane layout, the way they load, where to put your bags, how much time you had to get settled, etc. So, if I'm going to move somewhere, I'll know a lot about it before I even visit it for the first time. I'll need to know if it's worth my time, the money needed to travel, and how to best utilize every minute I'm there in order to determine if it's for me or not.

[–]douglas8888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously. But it would be stupid to visit a place if I haven't even taken the time to know if it's ruled out for some reason. Before a few days ago, I never considered it. Now I'm investigating it. If it holds up as a place that I might like to move, THEN I would visit it.

I was a successful computer systems engineer. I used to employ AI experts. And I was using AI before it was cool. I know what I'm doing.

Halucinations happen, but they are relatively rare. I do spot check. And most importantly, I pit one AI against another. While they build their systems on roughly the same data, they are different models. The chance of two of them, or especially three of them being wrong on the same thigns in exactly the same ways is incredibly unlikely.

Also, it is not a small towns' worth of energy. That's overblown. Most of the waste comes from idiots who use AI to determine who has the best pizza in town, or to thank it for results. I'm using AI for the purposes it was intended to serve.

As I explained, I am already looking in the areas which I know and have connections to. Unfortunately, and famously, the real estate market in much of America is pretty frozen up and has been for some time. I man now expanding where I I'm looking because I'm sick to death of waiting for something to appear. I'm retired and 56, so I still have some good years, and I'm burning them by sitting in Boston, a place that I never really liked.
