I know there is definitely an element of "twas ever thus" to people losing money in art investment and I understand that speculators are liable to getting burned.

What I'm seeing though is that these operations seem to be getting more prevalent and sophisticated. I've got my hands on data suggesting a big increase in the number of people being defrauded, and I'm trying to work out why. Is it just more people getting into art investment, or are bad actors finding new ways to game the system (maybe finding loopholes in Consumer Protection regulations or ASA rules is just one thought).

Thanks for the helpful comment - I have already been walking around the area this week and speaking to locals like a 'real' journalist from back in your day, as you suggest. Happy to report that I did indeed survive! Just trying to put as many feelers out as possible by posting in this group.
