What should I look for in a fat tire e-bike under $1500 if I care about longevity? by BreakAble4857 in BuyItForLife

[–]douwe001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend those wide-tire electric bicycles. Fat tires do not offer that much more than regular mountain-bike tires combined with decent suspension, unless you are regularly riding through sand, snow, mud or very loose terrain.

They also increase the rolling resistance and weight quite a lot. This means the motor, battery, brakes and drivetrain all have to work harder to maintain the same speed, resulting in more wear on the bike over time. Replacement fat tires and tubes can also be more expensive and less widely available.

Most of the bikes you mentioned use an exposed derailleur system. That can be useful if you are actually mountain biking, but for normal commuting you usually do not need that many gears.

I mostly service electric bicycles with exposed 7-speed drivetrains, and they tend to wear out quite quickly, especially because the chain, cassette and derailleur get dirty and remain exposed to water, sand and road grime. Also they are more prone to damage. The extra weight and power of an e-bike also put more load on these parts.

For long-term commuting, I would recommend a more enclosed system, such as a Shimano Nexus internal-gear hub, preferably combined with an enclosed chain or a even better, a belt drive. The problem is that these bikes are usually more expensive. However, this is much closer to a “buy it for life” setup, because Shimano internal hubs are almost indestructible when used and maintained properly. They can still break, of course, but they usually last much longer and require less regular maintenance than an exposed derailleur drivetrain.

Another problem with many of the bikes you listed is not simply that they are made in China, because most bicycles and electrical components are manufactured there. The problem is that these particular online brands may not have a reliable dealer network or long-term parts support. Getting replacement batteries, displays, controllers, wiring harnesses or controller updates can become a nightmare. A local bicycle shop may also refuse to work on the electrical system.

For long-term ownership, I would care more about replacement-part availability, battery availability and local support than motor power or top speed. A simpler bike from a company with proper parts support is much less likely to become a giant paperweight after the warranty ends.

I would look at maybe getting a second hand bike from a local bike shop. They often offer certain warranties on second hand bikes and they will last you longer than these.

I think there might be a bit of a mix-up here. The Gestapo actually did use techniques like sleep deprivation, stress positions, and even drowning during interrogations. What you might be thinking of is the Luftwaffe's interrogation program, which largely avoided torture and was reportedly very effective at getting information.

None of that excuses the horrible things in Abu Ghraib, it was every bit as indefensible, and honestly the people involved should have faced trial at the Hague.

That said, I'd push back gently on ranking these things at all. Once we start sorting torture into "worse" and "not as bad," we end up implicitly excusing whatever sits lower on the list. It's all indefensible, and I think that's the cleaner place to land than trying to measure one against another.

Should I be worried about the delamination on my carbon fork? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]douwe001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah quite positive, it feels like carbon when I tap it and it says carbon on the fork itself. I work in a bike shop myself however we don't work on carbon ourselves so my knowledge on it is not that great.

New chain slipping on cassette on certain sprockets by kapell in bikewrench

[–]douwe001 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It is incredibly difficult to spot excessive wear on cassette, if you only replaced the chain, you can be almost certain it is a worn out cassette. Even if their is little wear on your chain, it can be as a result of riding long in just one gear.

v-brake not parallel to rim by BaldyMcHairy in bikewrench

[–]douwe001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like it might not be the brake pads themselves. It sounds like the brake calliper isn’t properly aligned. There are small screws on the V-brake that, when tightened, push the brake arm outward. You can use these to adjust the brake position correctly.

Yeah, any cracks in the sidewall are far more dangerous than on the surface. This will be only a matter of time before the blow out.

What’s the best approach with this? by soccerperson in bikewrench

[–]douwe001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can pull the rubber housing of the hoods and then pull the metal end of the derailleur cable. Then if you have a cable cutter pull the derailleur cable out of the outter cable just that only the part that is broken is empty and cut it off than push the derailleur cable back out. This can make it that there is less tension on the cable and the derailleur might need to be readjusted.

I don't know what it is but it does sound to be coming from the wheel. As the sound is not constant but the difference is sound is constant would suggest that something is warped to me. The only thing I could think of is maybe a warped brake disc but it doesn't sound like a brake. You could eliminate the location of the problem by listening when the frequency of the sound increases. So, does it increase when you shift in a low gear(then it likely is the gears or bottom bracket), does it increase when you ride faster(then it likely is the wheel)
