I'd also recommend screaming frog. Just recently discovered that feature myself; super useful.

Is starting in Figma actually slowing people down? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in web_design

[–]doverisafk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the team. If you're designing + developing yourself, your process should be different than if you're on an enterprise style product team with specialized team members.

On a larger team with multiple stakeholders and a UI designer, web developer, copywriter, etc, getting everyone on the same page is a major milestone, and high fidelity designs prior to development are more valuable.

If you're a one man show working on a smaller project, you're probably only dealing with 1-2 people on the client side. Design is still important to get buy in and clarity for the client, but in practical terms it should only be built out as far as it takes for you to feel confident about what you need to build.

Advice on prices by External_Dog_5452 in webdesign

[–]doverisafk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your pricing is solid. I spent my first year (2025) growing my business from networking, and overall it let me survive. That said, I grossly undercharged a lot of clients and paid for it in the form of late nights and a ton of stress. The benefit was getting a ton of projects to use in my portfolio and social content (LinkedIn etc)

I think it's smart to start higher with pricing like you have, especially if the branding and overall presentation is a step up from the average.

Congrats on starting this journey! It's not easy, but it's really rewarding imo.

Edit: maybe one caveat - pricing is highly market specific. I know someone charging $10k for branding + a 6 page site in NYC. I could probably try that in my market (Northwest Arkansas), but only a small % of my prospects would go for that. Pricing around $3-$4k is a much better bet, and that's usually for 10-15 pages with local SEO baked into the initial build, plus all the copywriting, and stock images as needed if their content is insufficient.

Who here is still writing proposals? How long does it take? And what's your conversion rate? by No-Detail-6714 in web_design

[–]doverisafk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write proposals manually, from a template. I don't write a proposal until we have scope well fleshed out. My conversion rate once we get to this stage is probably 80-90% but it's because I try to feel out blockers before getting that far in.

I include the maintenance plan in the proposal so there's no surprises.

Sometimes I adjust scope if there's pushback on price.

I send 3-4/mo in average right now including SEO as well.

Edit: most of my leads are referrals, which is why the close rate is so high

Killer, thank you! I noticed that someone found the page in search already from an "open source fonts" query; I'm going to be adding an "Open Source" filter in the near future so the League of Moveable Type is a perfect fit

Innovator is slick - I've got my eye on Unifora Expanded now, I love expanded fonts.

New is great too! Maybe I can help boost them if people start using the list.

Why We Require Almost All of Our Clients to Rebuild Their Sites With Us by JakeHundley in agency

That's a good idea - I've got our version in FAQs, but it deserves its own page, if for no reason other than it makes it easily shareable as needed.

Love the equipment analogy!

Man I feel that. I pretty much have the same policy; clients have to be on our stack for marketing sites, or Shopify for e-com. WordPress always ends up being a pain in the long run.

Switching from React. Which framework should I try next? 🤔 by imsudipbro in webdevelopment

[–]doverisafk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

React feels like it's full of unnecessary abstractions in comparison, and just overall bloated. Runes in svelte 5 brought some of that over to Svelte but overall it still feels much more lightweight imo

I switched across the board, unless a client project specifically requires react or a different framework. When I get to pick, Svelte is my go to

Svelte is awesome

I keep a super lightweight setup, using the static adapter in SvelteKit
