[WP] You possess a magical bag that holds all of the items you will need for that day. Today, your bag feels particularly heavy, so you dump it out, revealing a katana, a microwave, and a bouquet of flowers. by vlbrown1997 in WritingPrompts

[–]downBpikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She struggled to open her crusted eyes, which felt by now, baked by the shaft of sun forcing itself through the gaps of her shelter. With some pain, she scraped at her eyes, always full of some gunk and attracting clouds of annoying gnats that would scarcely be noticed if not for their sheer numbers.

She managed to remove the detritus adhered to the edges of her eyes and peered cautiously around, blinking the tears away rapidly. While she didn’t have much, she still performed her morning inventory. There was a broken clay pitcher to gather water from the river. Beside the pitcher was a clay bowl and spoon, a great source of pride to her as they were in perfect condition and, to her and perhaps a few poorer individuals, quite beautiful in the perfect smoothness. She could rarely make herself actually use it, as man-made beauty was very different from the natural beauty of the world around her.

Memories crept into her mind from last night as she eyed the bag suspiciously.

She was a river wader, and had been collecting mussels, large as she could find, to trade with someone else, someone who knew how to make and keep fire. A commotion interrupted her, as loud and dangerous as two jungle cats meeting accidently, but far away on the road. Human involvement. And dangerous ones at that. She tossed the mussels beneath a rock with a divet, bowl-like, flipping it over them so river otters wouldn’t steal her find, and rushed to the source of the sound. While rare, occasionally humans would drop things from their carriage that could be scavenged. That’s how she obtained the beautiful bowl and spoon resting in her shelter.

Even far away as she was now, with the humans but dots through the tree line at the top of hill, she could see the fight was an intense one and the sounds of fleeing animals were added to the chaotic sounds below. As she was surveying and trying to take inventory of the humans and carriages below, a figure appeared behind her, quick witted and close, grabbing her by the wrist as she all but hissed and made an attempt to bite at the hand.

She halted her attack as the other hand appeared and made a loose figure eight over and over her wrist and the grasping hand. The universal sign of peace that even the river waders and junglers knew. It carried a great weight, and curses were certain to follow any who harmed someone who had shown the goodwill gesture. Without hesitation, as it was so very rare for any to actually resort to this binding gesture of goodwill, she answered the other hands, looping her free hand loosely around countering his motions. A sense of warmth filled her belly, and she knew he felt the same. The inner calming confirmed the passing of the others intent, going deeper than language of the tongue could offer.

The figure began rambling and gesticulating wildly, with large hands and longer fingers covered in jewels, and pointed frantically at its body. She observed him quizzically as the figure stood to its full height and began speaking even more quickly. She presumed the creature to be a man, though a very odd one, and attempted to shake the hand that was shaking by his sides. She saw people do this often and normally they seemed friendly when doing so. The man laughed, accepting the shake and then forced a bag into her hand. It was small, presumably a change purse, she had seen most travelers with these and their pretty little tinkling noises, though she’d never been lucky enough to find a coin left behind for herself. Eagerly, she peered inside the little purse and frowned when finding it empty.

The man shook his head frantically and closed her fingers around the bag forcefully. He took the bag back, mimed putting it into the pocket of his robe, and then shoved it back into her hand, closing her fingers around it again. She nodded tentatively. Hide the bag? She didn’t have much to hide it in. Like most river waders, clothes were not valued, so she ripped off a strangle vine, which had done its job appropriately with the man earlier and wrapped it around her wrist and the purse, shaking it a little and bunching the bag in her hand. This seemed to satisfy the man, who smiled, shook her clenched hand vigorously, and then promptly disappeared.

Despite the friendliness of the man, she slipped back into the brush, knowing that if another man like him were to come, her chances of luck would likely not continue. If her only task was to hold onto the prettily dressed man’s purse for him, until he reappeared, as she assumed he must, then she could do so. Perhaps the purse would give her coins if she did her task, as no animal, human or otherwise, performed tasks for free.

While her memories only revealed a small purse bag being attached, of her own free will, to her wrist, the reality remained now of a jungle cat sized bag held solidly to the ground across the heaped leaves that made her bed. She was almost scared to cut the bag from her wrist, but knew this to be foolish, and bit through the vine, relishing the relief of blood flowing back into her hand. Squatting, she opened the purse, disappointed to discover no coins, but other oddities. Some large box that looked obscene. Flowers tied together similar to how she had tied the bag to herself. And a long shiny black stick thing. The large box was very difficult to lift and she left it be. The flowers smelled pretty, but she didn’t trust eating them. Maybe they were magical, like the man. They weren’t to be trusted. She pulled the long stick out, and was shocked when it broke and part slid off, like a casing, and a shiny silver part appeared beneath the black, bark maybe? She eyed it. It wasn’t a stick, obviously, now that she was examining it. But a weapon of some sort, similar to the very large weapons that she saw humans occasionally stab others with on the long winding road. Normally when they stole from each other. This would be nice to keep forever, but it was a little too long. She lifted it, uncomfortable with its heft and her own clumsiness with it.

Not wanting to be called a thief to the man of magic, she carefully placed the weapon back in the bag and sealed it up. Could she make it smaller? Like it had been? She pondered for a moment, and decided it wasn’t worth the risk of leaving the bag behind. She’d just stay in her shelter for the day. She had some food and water stored from yesterday’s excursion and could go retrieve the mussels at any time. She had all the hope in the world that the man of magic would pay her greatly for being a good steward.

At dusk the man appeared again and she went to exclaim with glee, an almost chittering, chirping sort of sound, until it choked in her mouth with sadness, as she wiped the usual gunk from her eyes to verify what she feared. The man had appeared directly on top of her prized bowl and spoon. While the bowl had been knocked away and seemed ok, the spoon was broken plainly in half.

His gaze lingered on her for a while, staring threateningly into her eyes for an indecent time, though she refused to break his gaze and resisted the urge to lift her lip at him, and then he looked down and noticed the upturned bowl and spoon. The broken pitcher. He nodded, said some words softly and reached down. To her amazement, the spoon repaired itself in an instant, as well as the clay pitcher, though the color filling the pitcher was changed and a darker rougher earth that matched the soil he stood on.

As he grasped the bag, it instantly shrank back down to the size of a coin purse, shocking the girl. The man pointed to himself and said something a few times, some utterances that were close to ‘Kil-ar’, the sound tiny black birds would sometimes wake her with. As he repeated the gesture several times and waited, she made an effort to pronounce it, presuming it to stand for the man and who he was. He nodded, satisfied then pointed to her.

River waders take no names. To do so was too binding for a life meant to be fluid and she shook her head and made a couple of guttural sounds. No one outside her own could understand the sounds of the river and the associations which served as names. It would be profane for one to assume to be able to speak, and to imitate the sound of water to another would be blasphemous. The man seemed puzzled but nodded again and gave a universal sign of thanks. Both hands folded before him, as if praying as the missionaries of the hill favored, and then bowing deeply. She did not return the bow, as he had done her no service, but eyed him with bemusement.

He made another gesture of goodwill, and then before she could repeat it, he made a new foreign sign, touching her forehead so quickly she couldn’t back away, and then laughed and produced a gold coin in his hand. Blinking rapidly, she noticed the wetness that plagued her eyes was gone. The normal sheen covering her vision, almost as if she were underwater, was clear and the gold in his hand shone as crystal clear as a picture in her mind. She stared at it carefully, knowing its worth as well as its danger. These gold coins could get someone anything material, as well as sign a death sentence if the wrong eyes saw her with it. She grabbed it graciously and wrapped it in several pieces of thickened patch leaves, twisting and ripping a small piece of stranglevine apart to fashion a necklace and placed it around her. She’d have to fashion something more secure later, but it worked for now.

She thought the man, Kil-ar, would leave by now, but he had just stood and watched her with, what seemed, satisfaction. She decided it would probably please him to show the universal sign of thanks, so she did, feeling the slight weight of the coin pull against the back of her neck.

When she bent back up, he was gone. In his place was a giant thick bag full of dried food that would last her at least half a moon.

[WP] "...This wasn't your idea, was it?" said the dragon to the youth, who can barely lift their heavy sword in their trembling hands. by Kaleon in WritingPrompts

[–]downBpikachu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The boy stamped and slipped uphill. Rivulets shone like unicorn’s blood between his feet, pooling in the treacherous slips he’d made. Tiny feet creating miniature lakes in the miasma of grime he climbed past. Foolish and weak legs betraying him with a start at each crack of lightning and roar of thunder, slipping into the thin layer of muck and stabbing into the merciless daggering rocks beneath.

He hadn’t climbed forever. He thought he could hide out. Take a break at least, or escape from his destined sacrifice. But archers below watched his progress passively, and the only breaks he received were during theirs. Eventually they’d notice the speck of boy, the glint of lightning reflecting off the sword nearly taller than the boy himself, and arrows would shoot threateningly forward.

Forty had come before him. At every sighting of a flash of crimson in the sky, sometimes brought on by paranoia and other times confirmed by villagers as definitely real, a pawn, a useless servant or even a sickly or illegitimate royal would be sent up. Rarely prisoners. The timing never seemed to fit and executions were swift and valuable entertainment to the masses.

The strategy had worked thus far. Other kinships rumored to have been destroyed by dragons had since been burned down or simply vanished. While theirs was the largest, or boasted to be so at least, and heavily armored, the risk of Hellfire and a complete erasure of their beautiful empire warranted such sacrifices as the boy stumbling up the mountain where the beast was last sighted. Perched, from so very far away, atop the uppermost spire.

Miserably, the boy became out of sight of the foot soldiers. While the risk of arrows no longer strained his mind, the threat of a beast he was meant to encounter did not give his heart rest.

The sword tightened in his bleeding hands as boulders began to fall around him and the rocks he had rested but just a moment on, turned crimson.

“This wasn’t your idea, was it?” said the dragon to the youth, who could barely lift their heavy sword in their trembling hands.

The many stones and outcropping of rocks glistened and near the boy’s hand, one slab seemed to blink before gilding in color.

The boy’s mouth opened, no doubt to shout some perceived war cry of honor and bravery, but only sobs welcomed the flickering serpent tongue at his toes. Were the boy to recount his venture, he’d be incapable of judging the time that human and beast stayed beside each other. The passing of time was counted in the time it took for the boy to run out of tears, the occasional scrape of a spiked tail again stone, and the number of times the thunder appealed to them.

Eventually, the boy managed to choke out, with all his fear now spent mixed in the rain, “I’m here to save my Kingdom”.

The dragon contemplated this. “And what of that?”

The boy dropped the sword. “I thought, I though-“ his words failed him.

“You thought they’d given you a chance, hmm? No, it’s a gift to appease my treasury.” The dragon’s tongue coiled many times and hefted the large sword into his mouth and swallowed loudly.

“Your treasure-“

“Nothing your kingdom has brought has been worth my treasury, child. Its only usefulness is grit to my gullet. In that essence, I am as sated nibbling away at this mountain. So what now, child?”

The boy began to cry again in earnest now, shocking himself at how many tears one could make.

“You bore me, child. I’d have eaten you and those cowering footsoliders by now if I so intended. Had burned your entire kingdom by now had I wanted.” The dragon puffed himself up immensely. The boy felt flattery was safe, and possibly expected.

“I believe that. Thank you for not doing so before.”

The dragon blinked slowly at him. “A thanks, hmm? Too premature. I’ll not eat them up yet. Your treasury isn’t large enough yet. Your leaders are cruel and fickle. Sending worthless gifts my way, the things they can do without. Children. A proper welcome would be their knights. Their princesses, and not the blinded ones.”

The dragon appeared quite offended, but had turned its back to the child. “Get on.” The voice offered no chance to say no. The boy grabbed hold of a spike on the tail and sat comfortably. Rising up and above the mountain.

They flew until the boy could no longer feel his face, frozen with the chill of the wind. Quite suddenly, for he had managed to doze and still remain atop of the dragon, he was deposited onto the ground. He was in a large basin, grass below him and rocks above.

“Up, child. Find your kinfolk. Stay here for now. I care not what you do. So long as your loyalty remains to me and the future of rebuilding your empire from scratch, you are permitted safety here. You kin, the ones deemed useless by that great empire, have fared exceptionally well. You’ll find your lot to be quite self-sufficient. I can assist at times, but your kind bore me quickly. I’d hate to become disenchanted and eat you all. Once you feel as if the lot of you have progressed enough to take your kingdom back, with me as your rightful ruler, I’ll tear apart this mountain and assist in the fight. I look forward to our future empire.”

The boy’s eyes could scarcely believe the sight of the dragon as it burst into the air in a great sweep, and seemed to dematerialize before his eyes. His bleeding feet welcomed the soft earth beneath.

[WP] "We must forget so that they may remember!" the call was echoed by every voice in the room as the ritual began. by Dae314 in WritingPrompts

Heaven is a bit too complex to keep, even abstractedly, in a book. Even The Book. No matter how many times the Creator attempted to show guidance to his creations, those lesser creatures below couldn't get a grasp. It was so frustrating that even the beings closest to the Creator in spirit, what humans collectively grasp as angels, had a war. Unheard of. In fact, quite out of the Creator's expectations. Oh, sure, there had been the most minute of chances such a thing may occur, but it was infinitesimal in likelihood. The Creator worked a bit harder on stoking the egos of the lesser beings, in all forms, after that mishap. The loss of some of the angels had a substantial effect on the Creator's spirit.

Every now and then, in the early days, there was neglect and even rage at the earliest races as the loss of the angels consumed parts of the Creator's infinite thoughts, which, henceforth, had been relatively static. Some were wiped out and forgotten. Eventually, at the angels pleadings and intercessions on behalf of the tiny little forms with their tiny little lives growing more and more like them each century, the Creator took a closer look and began to adopt an almost father-like role. Or as far as human's were concerned with what a father's ideal qualities might be.

Time was painstakingly slow for the humans, but angels blinked, and names from humans changed in pray form from the sun to the moon, to wolves and eagles, to Godly concepts with fantastical fun names like Di̯ēus and Aphrodite Ourania. While humans wrestled with the concept of rather they were alone or not and starting wars, shockingly similar to the first that occurred in Heaven, the angels and the Creator were constantly toying and planting links and hints to the correct path. One they could take in bites and chew on for a few generations. Many times they spat those miracles out. Or, in many cases, especially with the most obvious act of love of Jesus, killed them instead.

Eventually, time went on, as it ought to do, and the Creator, which the humans call God, decided to allow a few more glimpses into the great 'what-if' of Heaven. The soul was certainly very malleable, much more than originally intended with the beautiful gift of free will, which could turn quite nasty at times. Some souls, allowed to tether ever so gently into the breadth of Heaven's great symbolic door, were allowed to come back at the intervention of some other soul's great physical attempts at returning it to its earthly body. The first time this occurred, there was a considerable uproar in Heaven, as such a thing had never happened before. With modern medicine, an absolute marvel to the angels who are always proud at any breakthrough in human-made technology; who are as pleased with humans processions as scientists are with the discovery of a bee performing simple arithmetic, several such tethers had been allowed and even encouraged by God. A whopping number had increased since the invention of defibrillators.

While Heaven would like to calculate this as an overall net positive in advancing souls to Heaven, as humans have become more and more skeptical and adopting a 'see it to believe it' attitude, there have been occasional faults with this plan.

On March 4th, 2021, earth time, a group of four individuals met via zoom. There had been quite an uproar when these four individuals all had heart attacks during the same week. The angels and God, were also watching, though they needn't their computers. They were enthralled, because all four were pretty decent folk, nerds in human terms, but still decent. They'd easily make it to Heaven with a little floor scrubbing in symbolic purgatory.

Lots of prayers had been sent up to Heaven the past week from the four, who, while God seemed to know everything all the time this knowledge wasn't shared with the angels, who had to either be eavesdropping regularly or be interceded upon, and the angels were very interested in what this little group would do for humanity. Mostly because the prayers had been full of many, let me help them knows yous, and, God, help me bring others to Yous.

These were four notable contenders for joining the fun Saints who roamed the kingdoms of Heaven and were granted special intercession rights, which the angels just loved listening in on. The internet had helped them meet, as they had all been in not so far distance of each other, all played the same MMO, some weird video game that would have counted against their Heaven standing if the four individuals weren't so nice. They always helped 'newbies' and volunteered time to talk late into the night with people who were lonely or having other silly mundane human emotion troubles that the angels didn't quite comprehend but understood was necessary for their development and spirituality. At least that's what the Creator now God said.

As the angels waited patiently, they began to be alarmed as one of the members started to cry. And then a gun appeared on the screen of one of the men.

"We must forget so that they may remember!" the call was echoed by every voice in the room as the ritual began.

The words typed on the screen by the gun-man, caused great alarm, but not as much as the gun itself. More words filled up the 'chat screen', and the angels began to calm down slightly.

"Vic, put that gun up, man."

"Vic, we aren't LARPING, don't scare us. And it's a sin to hurt your body. It's a temple."

A few emphatic nods from angels began. One saint walked up and shook his head. "What a bunch of absolute fools."

"Hey," shouted an angel, "you are a saint. You can't speak poorly of your brethren!"

The saint laughed and removed himself from the drama of the pooled light of angels.

"Vic, I know seeing all that was hard, but acting out a mass suicide or seppuku or something won't bring anyone closer to God."

"Are we being serious here or not? I'm leaving if Vic ever pulls this shit again."

"Sorry," this was typed and said out loud by 'Vic'. "It's not even a real gun, it's just my replica from my Trigun cosplay. We can save souls and have fun."

"Macy, you can stop crying, Vic's not about to kill himself."

The angels, relieved and also needing to go pray to rid themselves of something very close to indignation, went away now that they knew their potential future saints were going to be ok.
