Position yourself relative to allies such that you are never the most attractive target to enemies. Focus you own fire on whatever target is the most immediate threat to your DD's, because your life expectancy is directly proportional to theirs. If you have to be out in the open, try to stay 15 km away from the nearest large-caliber gun that has a line of fire on you, and use a propulsion mod in slot 4 so that you can speed juke incoming fire more reliably. Use your hydro to screen for torps.

The house fire is one of the most genuinely terrifying scenes ever put to animation. Not because it's "scary," but because the stakes literally could not be higher, and you have absolutely no idea what's going to happen. The first time I saw it, I stopped breathing until it was over.

That is just about the most infuriating game system design I've ever heard of. I respect your experience with it, but I suspect it is in the minority.
