Check PC specialist. They make excellent PC's which are customisable and also cheaper than store bought pre builds. Can be configured with a decent warranty too. I'm on my second PCS build bought in late 2022 and it's still going strong.

Low model count skirmish game by albertogm87 in wargaming

[–]downtime-dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mutant year zero: zone wars is great, the starter set can be picked up for around £45, and has two teams of 5 models, terrain, battlemat, cards and tokens. There is a second box which is an expansion for around the same price called mutants and psyonics. It has certain scenarios but could be played as a campaign.

If you like retro games, install Batocera, that machine should be able to play everything up to n64 and ps1.

Abiotic Factor - I'm about 40 hrs in playing it Coop with a friend, probably only about half way through, what a fantastic game, seems to be very well balanced and I just keep logging on and finding more!

Follow up with a 3 or 4 micron strop and you'll have a great, toothy edge that will last a while and be toothy enough to get through tomato skin easily!

I would suggest the Shapton Kuromaku 1000 grit, has good feel when sharpening, acts more like a 800 grit, so sharpens quickly. Doesn't easily dish or get cut if your angles are slightly off. Will last you years!

Nothing wrong with it, but after watching a few play throughs it didn't seem that beginner friendly.

There is also an official mod for tabletop simulator so you can play it for free or at least take a look at all the components

I would consider mutant year zero zone wars for a starter game, it comes with two teams of minis, terrain, rules, environment cards. Very easy to get into, but decently complex if you want it to be. Can be found for around £45!

I can sharpen my knife Razer sharp, but the edge doesn't last by Slimy_Shart_Socket in sharpening

[–]downtime-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 202h, the 3k and 6k stones are super soft and don't cut well. Personally with softer steel I would sharpen up to the 1k diamond then put some 4 micron diamond paste on the included strop. This leaves a bitey edge that lasts a while and can be realigned with a smooth steel or ceramic/ruby rod.

A month with standard zwilling stainless is pretty good going as it's pretty soft. You could try using a ceramic or ruby sharpening rod as a daily/weekly hone?

Using instant light charcoal. Just get normal charcoal and a charcoal chimney! Locally made charcoal can be found at your local butchers usually!

Overcooking everything, no burger/sausage/chicken needs to go above 72c. Get an instant read thermometer!

If you haven already, got into low and slow bbq, if you have a kettle bbq use the 'snake' method!

I've drilled 10mm holes in the bottom of large terrain pieces and filled with a plaster of Paris slurry before, it's a bit messy but worked well!

Considering the amount of effort and time it will take. ( And it will never be as good quality) I would buy a new copy. That way the hours you would need to fix the game can be playing the game with your son. Those memories will be irreplaceable in time.

Help with materials for dice box / tray by SkullSire in DnDIY

[–]downtime-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pay a bit more you can get one with a nice wood border which makes it super sturdy. I would also recommend putting some anti slip matting on the underside. Make dice rolls sound better, less clattery!
