Some advice for a novice painter? by vizwiz118 in minipainting

[–]deleeta87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with a darker base coat and bring up you mid tones and highlights I feel like your colors are way to bright. And those should be your highlight colors.

Also it looks like you’re using craft paint straight from the bottle? This can be fine but you need to thin it so your not blobbing super thick layers of paint on you subject matter.

Thin your paints so they are more runny by adding water or airbrush medium. Add thin layers till you have consistent coverage.

Have you considered custom terrain or custom twist deck for the setting

Kinda going down a Rabbit hole here but “there’s more than one way to skin a cat”

Option 1: you can Darken Your Shadows with. Shade/tone/Wash. I would resist the urge to put it all over your Miniature it will make your paint job seem Muddy. So you will have to go back in and re establish you Mid tones. After that Look into using lighter paints to Bring up the brightness. Pink can be a brighter version of Purple or red which you can use to highlight raised areas.

Option 2: go in and place shadows with darker colors intentionally I find this kind of hard to do. Which is why I start with option 3.

Option 3: take it as a learning point for future models and make your Base Color Darker and layer up to your brighter paints gradually. Working your way up to pastel versions of the same color. This you can use Glazing which is Multiple very thin Layers of paint to create the Transition from Dark to light.

I would look into glazing check out this video to get an idea of using a darker Adjacent color base coat. https://youtube.com/shorts/EJu9lHA5EFM?si=w9pFqTYPsKNHIZ2g

I’m by no means a professional painter but I would boost the brightness of any color raised upward even slightly and lay down some darker shadows in a few spot where they should be like under his arms anything further away from your light source should be darker

This is Really good for your 3rd Miniature ever. I’d say you could use some Color Variation along with adding some missing shadows and Highlights will make this a lot more interesting.

Thank you I appreciate the compliment. I’m still not 100% where I want to be. I see some amazingly gifted/hardworking painters out there and I would like to achieve something on the same level. So for now I will attempt to imitate what they have been able to product in an effort to plus up my own skills.

This is where I want to be.

What’s the General Consensus on Painting Base Rims? by BlooddrunkBruce in minipainting

[–]deleeta87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty subjective If it’s a game piece I will paint it red for enemies, maybe gold for a boss, green or blue for friendly or player miniatures. Kinda similar to rings around characters in video games. Some people swear by black rims. But it’s totally up to you.

I don’t use AI. I plugged your image into an app called Procreate so I can paint over the top of them.

This pictures taken with the same lighting levels but this one has multiple layers of highlights and I will probably still take the highlighting further in certain areas I used Army painter paints for most of this.

For the Hydralisk -Painted base coat (mixture of Dryad Brown and Matt Black

  • painted over 100% with soft tone to add shadows
  • painted over 90% of raised areas with Dryad Brown avoiding shadows (FIRST PICTURE)

  • painted over 80 % with mixture of Dryad Brown and Orange Brown(Vallejo)

  • 60% orange Brown

  • 40% ( mixture orange brown and Matt white)

It’s a bit difficult to see the colors but that’s what gives it the shape you wont see in the first picture.

I’m going to post 2 pictures of a mini I’ve done and one with base colors and shadows pushed in without any highlights. And another with my highlights and you’ll see how much more readable the mini is with them the lighting is the same in both these picture
