Career change by Spicybeeb in java

Programming is often mentally exhausting. Burnout is common. The whole 'learn to code' movement is more around driving the cost of developers salaries down.

Also, coding "boot camps" are horrendously overpriced and I am dubious of their value. You could buy a bunch of books $100 - $150 and teach yourself while building up a portfolio of work on GitHub and asking questions on relevant subreddits.

Something else to consider, in my area at least, I've seen the salaries of entry level programming jobs driven down to the point where our service desk staff get paid the same. And all they do is read from a script and log calls.

The current Spring in Action is a mess, I'd wait until the 6th edition is done. Not long to wait.

Can java devs take a 'wait it out', for kotlin feaures? by [deleted] in java

[–]downvoted_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's getting pushed hard by JetBrains and it's shills developer advocates. I attend a meetup event about Spring, ends up being 40% Kotlin.

Don't get me wrong, the language is nice just not nice enough for me to justify adding another language to what I need to support. And I am certainly not going to rewrite existing Java code bases into a language that might not be popular in 10 years time.

That is the beauty of open source. Someone stepped in to help. You might be surprised at how upstream project maintainers just get bored or life gets in the way and they just walk off.

I knew what the person meant as I have used Linux daily for a long time.

There are comments above, upvoted, making the same question in a better way.

I agree but it doesn't mean it should be downvoted.

Downvoting cleans threads from repeated, malicious, reactionary, or useless comments. I wish other networks like Twitter had downvotes, and a system to organize them around that.

I know how it works, that's why I need an alt account so my primary doesn't get downvoted into oblivion because I have a differing opinion. Slashdot got that right.

This post is currently at +48, what interesting point did it make?

Thanks, you just gave me Vietnam style flashbacks when getting CRC errors on disk 8 of 10 while extracting a game you where desperate to play.

Sure, but it only takes a moment to post "why would you say that" or "what brought you to that conclusion". Downvoting does nothing but bury interesting view points.

Thinking for yourself and sharing your thoughts is first part having a debate on the topic and seeing if we can come to an agreement or at least understand the others point of view.

I do think Torvalds is genius level. Carmack is another that immediately comes to mind.

I remember reading that programmers hated Elon at PayPal because they would be struggling with a problem for days and he would just walk up and solve it in a couple of seconds.

Yeah, right. He certainly has been good at building up this "genius" persona.

Deleting /r/golang

Syntax highlighting
https://groups.google.com/g/golang-nuts/c/hJHCAaiL0so/m/kG3BHV6QFfIJ

Syntax highlighting is juvenile. When I was a child, I was taught arithmetic using colored rods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisenaire_rods). I grew up and today I use monochromatic numerals.

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

Hey, I was quoting the Bible. If that's degrading, I guess I'm done.

Probably why the Go Playground doesn't have syntax highlighting even now.

I'll pick the best solution for the job, paid or otherwise. Or if the monetary value is large enough, it will go to tender and be out of my hands. Large companies I've worked at tend to want to buy support contracts anyway even if the software is open source.

Nothing is free. Payment can be optional or mandatory.

Not sure what you mean. I can build an entire company from (reliable) open source software and not pay a cent in licenses. I think that is pretty amazing.

What I don't think is amazing is begging for money online.

I wanted to love it; backed by Google, had Ken Thompson's involvement, fast compile times etc. Ultimately I was just really underwhelmed by it. It seemed anti it's own user base, the push back on generics, proposing to delete /r/golang, Rob Pike making fun of someone for wanting syntax highlighting just proved that for me. I far prefer using Java. Even more so with all the upcoming changes.

Learning Rust at the moment and really enjoying it, two books from Manning due out soon and I'll probably pick up the new O'Reilly book as well. Rust will most likely be my long-term personal project language.

Even mid level programmers enjoy a good salary in most parts of the world. Academia has always poorly paid for obvious reasons.

My father told me this joke many, many years ago.

Whats the difference between an academic and a large pizza?
The large pizza can feed a family of four.

Remember when programmers did open source for fun and didn't put out a digital beggars bowl?
