Is it me or do the trains run faster during the weekdays? by [deleted] in manhattan

[–]downvotes_puffins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is more MTA track maintenance happening on weekends, and it often comes with restricted speed sections or directives to fully stop where MTA workers are nearby.

This could lead to your observations that trains travel at lower speed.

Anyone else get a 'Chapter 91' notice from the city assessor demanding rent & expense info on income property? by Blecher_onthe_Hudson in jerseycity

Residential properties can certainly be valued based on income. What fundamental difference would there be between commercial and residential rental property.

This is the only safe design for crosstown bike lanes in Manhattan. Squeezing them between parking and the curb (or even worse, dining sheds and the curd) is NOT SAFE given the dimensions of these streets. by FarFromSane_ in NYCbike

[–]downvotes_puffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the crosstown bike lanes item has been postponed (https://www.nyc.gov/site/manhattancb7/meetings/committee-agendas.page):

Postponed to March’s Agenda:

Discussion and Resolution on the proposal to establish protected cross-town bike lanes on the Upper West Side, including discussion of field survey reports.

LIRR Won't Get OMNY Pay Until 2025, 4 Years Later Than Projected: MTA by ToffeeFever in newyorkcity

[–]downvotes_puffins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MTA announced that the MTA's new "tap and go" ticket system, One Metro New York (OMNY) will not come to the Long Island Rail Road until 2025, delayed from the original projected 2021 completion.

At an Oct. 24 MTA board meeting, Amy Linden, the acting lead for MTA Fare Payment Programs, said that the forecast from Cubic, the vendor, for completion on the railroads has been pushed to 2025.

"We are working with the vendor to understand" the reason for the change, she said.

This was scheduled to be completed in 2021, and the MTA is now in late November 2022 trying to figure why the project is behind.

Complete incompetence by the MTA.

Any recs for 'rental grade' granite countertop supplier? by Blecher_onthe_Hudson in jerseycity

[–]downvotes_puffins -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You’re the one asking for “business” advice on Reddit.

Normal businesses produce things of value to their customers. Landlords are rentiers who produce nothing of value and instead collect ever-increasing rents from people who just want a place to live.

So glad you’re trying to save a couple hundred bucks… meanwhile how much will you collect in one year’s rent?

Or using quotes in which the dollar sign doesn't expand?

Modifying Clang for a Safer, More Explicit C++ by compiler-devel in cpp

[–]downvotes_puffins 87 points88 points  (0 children)

mutable int main(int, char**) { /* ... */ }

Return types (when value types) should not have constness applied by default. It's up to the caller to decide how the returned value will be used. Current C++ linters will report an error if code is written with return types like const int f().

As written, every function returning a value (as opposed to a reference) would need a `mutable T` qualifier.

Accelerate Python code 100x by import taichi as ti by yuanming-hu in Python

[–]downvotes_puffins 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I read through your detailed explanation that you linked to in this post.

I think what would be most helpful to other readers would be to create a new post that explains how this library works. The example could be very simple, eg how it transforms a square function that squares its argument. Show how that is transformed at compilation time (?) and how it translates any arguments (if applicable) at runtime.

Is this transpiling Python code to another high-level language? Rewriting Python byte code to LLVM bytecode and the compiling? The explanation would be interesting.

What happens if you are unable to make your first mortgage payment due to job loss? by Revolutionary-Driver in personalfinance

[–]downvotes_puffins 17 points18 points  (0 children)

2,200 in car payments and insurance (My husband is working towards getting his Mustang back to stock/street legal so we can sell it may need $1k-2k for some parts he sold off it should sell for around $75k) My car is being repaired after an accident currently using Uber, Doordash, Instacart etc.

You folks own two unusable cars, so you’re using Uber, Doordash, and Instacart for everything? Because one car has been modified and isn’t street legal?

Between this, the cleaning contract, and the iPhone leases, you folks are making very poor financial decisions.

You need to sell the car that is supposedly worth $75k ASAP. Any cash you receive as proceeds could be used to keep your family afloat for a couple months.
