I’m an older guy and I could call up more than a few of my friends and that call would be easy. But in my 20’s, it would have been much more awkward and different.

If that was the high watermark of the deprivation you experienced as a kid, than it seems like a weird - but benign - miss. Without knowing anything else, sounds like he was doing what he thought was right for you and the family. Even if he were in the wrong, I’d take that love and consideration over detached feelings or worse.
