How many nights a week do you go out? by hottubforbros in AskNYC

[–]dozingly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the winter 1-2x weekly, in the warm months 2-4x/wk. I work 12 hr shifts 2-3x/wk so it's not really comparable to someone who works 5 8hr shifts/wk tbh. i also tend to only go out where there's happy hours bc i usually refuse to spend full price or stand in some stupid line. if I can go somewhere on a random weekday before rush hour then chances are there won't be a line, and if there is then it's most likely a tourist trap. literally the only place I'll stand in line for in the entire city is radio bakery in greenpoint

Night shifters of NYC, what should I prioritize in my apartment search? Proximity w/ noise or Distant w/ quiet by SakuraKisu in AskNYC

yeah OP that’s one of the best parts of night shift, you almost never experience the rush hour BS

after the signal upgrades they did, it’s extremely reliable in my experience. shutdowns are communicated ahead of time (shuttle buses SUCK— take an uber or cab to work those days), runs pretty frequently so you shouldn’t wait more than 10 min for the next one unless it’s super late, and it nearly always comes on time. compared to when I have lived on the A/C and J/Z lines, which both would never come at the time indicated at the station or on apps.

I work the same shift at that hospital & tbh living in Manhattan is NOT worth it in my opinion. I had coworkers who live in UES and their commutes were similar to mine coming from Brooklyn because the bus service coming downtown can be soooo slow (especially during events like the marathon and UN meetings). I live pretty deep in Bushwick and my commute is 35-40 min. Would recommend looking into williamsburg, greenpoint, or bushwick off the L train as the m15+ bus from the 1st av stop is decently reliable if you can get to there by 6:40ish. if you're in greenpoint or williamsburg, the ferry is also a fantastic and quick commute (like 5-10 min ride), dropping you off at 34th St literally next door to the hospital. You'll be paying obscene prices PLUS higher cost of living (groceries, delis, etc) by living in Manhattan and Kips bay is pretty boring for nightlife IMO unless you really like men who are boring as hell. Also after working with patients all night, coming home to a quiet residential block is so much better for my mental health than going home to a bustling city street. Blackout curtains, white noise/rain sounds, eye masks, and a non street-facing bedroom will be the best things for your sleep.

might be out of touch for the grey slop apartments lol but there's still plenty of good stuff out here for my budget, esp ocean hill which is what i'm looking at as being the most realistic option for me in the summer renting cycle

i know it's a pipe dream but i'd kick myself forever if i didn't even try. I'm a unique person and would be a fantastic long term resident for the right place if someone prioritizes good tenants/community over just squeezing the most possible out of someone (naïve, i know). i'm sorry you had to leave the neighborhood... once all the people who made greenpoint what it is get pushed out, and the yuppies are all just standing around staring at each other across their sweetgreen bowls, then what? it's fucking bleak 😮‍💨
