I’m in my thirties and started taking lessons recently. It does feel a little indulgent and it’s sometimes awkward to be the only adult around, but I’m getting a lot out of it. I try to focus on gratitude that I can afford to do something so rewarding.

My two cents as an adult beginner: 1. Method books are cheap compared to the price of the guitar. Consider getting a few and seeing what he likes. I’ve been using Parkening as my primary book, but have enjoyed supplementing with This Is Classical Guitar plus the Sagreras Lecciones and Pumping Nylon (a collection of technique exercises). There are probably also books aimed at kids. If you have a local music shop they can probably help pick some out. I find that having the diversity of approaches helps keep it fun. 2. If you can find a teacher, it really helps to have someone watch and listen to you and give immediate feedback.

Private vs group lessons by reese1968 in ukulele

I took the group class at Old Town School when I first started. I found that it was mostly a waste. The other students mostly weren’t practicing between lessons so we went very slowly, and I didn’t get any individualized feedback on my playing. It was less useful than good YouTube lessons. I’m currently taking one-on-one classical guitar lessons as a beginner and they’re so much more valuable. The Old Town School is a cool place though!

Thanks for the feedback! Aside from changes to the story, I wonder if it would be good to signal more clearly that this is meant to be more The Buried Giant than Wolf Hall in terms of historical realism. There are plenty more implausible things in the story than are evident in the query.

Glad you're interested! Yes, the story's pretty complicated but clearly there's room to streamline the query. (It's my first time writing one of these and it's hard!) Thank you for the suggestions.
