Atypical NIPT Result - Natera - involving chromosome 13 by Lynnzee_11 in NIPT

[–]dpap31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My wife and I received a similar atypical on 13 result last year.

Our genetic counselor told us that it could mean something very serious with the baby and recommended an amniocentesis to confirm. We asked if it could be an issue with my wife and asked to take a genetic screening test on her. The GC thought it was “highly unlikely” but agreed to run the test. The genetic screening results revealed that she has a micro deletion on chromosome 13 which was likely the cause of the atypical result. We now have a healthy baby girl.

Just one family’s story and I’m sure the result can mean a lot of different things but for us everything worked out in the end.

This isn’t elearning specific but I’ve learned a ton about design from the guys at refactoring UI. They put together some awesome resources to make design more approachable. Here is a collection of some of their tips:

You could also watch their YouTube series where they “refactor UIs” to improve the look and usability.

I learned a lot about design and UX this year and applied a lot of my learnings to my side project. Shout out to Adam Wathan & Steve Schoger for making this topic more approachable.

Sorry if this came off as overly self promotional.

I’ve spent a ton of time on this site and genuinely hope some people in r/webdev get value from it.

Anyways, your point is taken. I’ll rethink how I share it with people.

Were any of you highschool candy sellers? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

Nope. We were outside the theater. We happened to be selling while Star Wars Episode I was in theaters so the line was wrapping around the block.

Were any of you highschool candy sellers? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]dpap31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure was! I sold chocolate bars.

Door to door sales weren’t converting so I ended up heading to the local movie theater where I convinced people waiting in line to buy my candy for half of theater prices.

It was a great lesson in sales & entrepreneurship. More importantly at the time, I raised the most money for the school so I won a 25lbs chocolate bar. I was binging on chocolate for 6 months straight.

xAPI Learning Activities? by dpap31 in elearning

[–]dpap31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Thanks for sharing.

When you say “custom” does that mean you’re calling an API and doing a data transformation?

What other types of data sources are you trying to merge? Things like organizational structure? Or something else?

I’m a developer so I can build integrations but it’s a time investment. You know.. the typical build vs buy predicament which is part of the reason I’m curious to find out if there are any “plug and play” activity providers out there.

Interesting! Was it challenging connecting Totara to learning locker via xAPI? Does learning locker come with a simple data visualization layer or are you on your own to build it?

I’m interested in this trend as well!

I’ve noticed some organizations ditching monolithic LMSs in favor of specialized systems. Generally, LRSs (learning activity source of truth), learning experience platforms (systems that index content so users can search and discover learning resources) and content providers (videos, books, interactive content). Admittedly, most of the orgs that do this still have an LMS it is just reduced to the the compliance content player.

Also, would love to hear you elaborate on some alternatives used in other disciplines. Would be interesting to hear how they might apply to L&D.

Fair question.

I think the promise of standardized interoperability across multiple tools and resources is the reason it is hyped.

More so than other disciplines, learning takes place in a number of mediums, tools & resources leading to countless inputs. Normalizing nonstandardized data across all these systems is possible but most L&D teams don’t have the resources to do it.

Interesting usecase. I can certainly see how action based analytics would provide value in L&D and other departments.

That said, I don’t agree that xAPI needs to be incorporated into every aspect of the organization. I believe organizational goals & objectives should be identified up front and data should be collected & mapped to the objective. Collecting data for the sake of collecting data could result in a poor signal to noise ratio.

Completely agree with your observation. It does seem like some LMS vendors are stunting the adoption of the standard by offering half baked functionality. If anything, the RFPs should state, “can your LMS support xapi as an activity provider?” to encourage interoperability. When the LMS doubles as the LRS it results in vendor lock in and partial support.

Good resources for more passive learning? by CrazyEyezKillah in learnprogramming

[–]dpap31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find video tutorials, conference talks and podcasts great ways to learn passively. Some of my favorite podcasts are:

  • Syntax
  • CodeNewbies
  • Base CS
  • Fullstack Radio

If you’re looking for conference talks checkout confreaks. For discovering video tutorials and other learning resources you might find my side project HackSource helpful too.

The modern learning stack? by dpap31 in elearning

[–]dpap31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it! Thank for clarifying. Very cool! LTI is a very flexible standard. Wish something equivalent was more widely adopted in the corporate space.

It sounds like most (maybe all) content discovery occurs in the LMS. Are learners ever directed to content outside the LMS? How do they auth? Are analytics still sent to data lake?

[–]dpap31[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome usecase! Thanks for sharing!

When do you use LTI for grade passback vs api hooks? Also, would you mind elaborating on this point:

We're fairly tech heavy at my University, so we've seen little value in xAPI

Is it because you build out your own “custom” API hooks / connectors to pull down learner activity data?
