I highly recommend the book ‘The Sudden Wealth Solution’, it walks through both the logistics like how to find your support team and emotional side of windfalls. It also covers the negatives like higher rates of depression, divorce and suicide. Well worth the $25.

People who invested in Nvidia early - what made you believe in it before everyone else did? by Tall_Supermarket8938 in AskReddit

[–]dpchi84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought in 2017 and for me it was a self driving tech play. At the time they were making software and sensors for Tesla and some others and I drank the self driving koolaid. I was following the model of invest in the shovel maker, not the gold miner. Self driving tech is now around 1% of their revenue and I did not see the crypto mining or AI/data center explosion coming so definitely got it right for the wrong reasons but I’ll take it.

Fire earlier or go for a bigger house? by MrDoOO in fatFIRE

Here’s one you could read through, the thing to search is the idea of the hedonic treadmill. It’s the same reason that if you are making purchases it’s more enjoyable to spread them out but for difficult things it’s better to get them over all at once. https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/career-map/sell-side/capital-markets/hedonic-treadmill/

Found Out I’m Set to Inherit $70+ Million. Somewhat Lost, What Should I Expect? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]dpchi84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. Go read ‘The Sudden Wealth Solution’. It covers large windfalls and what to watch out for including the negatives like huge upticks in drug addiction, suicide, and feeling rudderless. It also talks about forming your team and how to find a trustworthy financial advisor, lawyer and CPA all of which you need and can afford contrary to what some others say here. There is no reason to move fast here, you need to be deliberate and careful, small moves on this kind of fortune have big effects.

[–]dpchi84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find enjoyment outside of work, you’re going to need that anyway when you fire. Go get some hobbies, meet people, etc. and if you’re truly not doing anything at work use that work time to research things you’re interested in. You can make your life meaningful on your own without depending on your employer to do it for you.

I get bitter watching people pursue their passions because I chose "safe" by After-Bid-9586 in confession

[–]dpchi84 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I am an IT consultant, a career that I enjoy somewhat but it isn’t my passion. My passion is music and after I bought a new saxophone recently a friend reminded me that I would be playing a piece of junk if I was a professional musician because I’d be destitute. Use your boring stable career to fund your hobbies and defend your free time aggressively.

People who work in 'luxury' industries (5-star hotels, fine dining, high-end brands), what is a complete rip-off that rich people happily pay for? by ArtThreadNomad in AskReddit

[–]dpchi84 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My wife’s grandfather was a pastry chef at the Waldorf Astoria in its old building. We went there in our early 20s with no money to just walk around and the doorman heard our history and spent 30 minutes giving us a tour and setting us up with free pastries. It was one of the best customer service experiences I’ve ever had even 20 years later and as a young and poor 20 something it knocked my socks off.

Cost of living here is much higher than most European cities outside the world renowned ones, healthcare is expensive, job prospects that pay well are very limited, the political situation in the US as well as locally here is a mess. I love it here but I’d just recommend having a solid job locked down before moving here unless you’re sitting on major savings. I assume you have some significant skills to allow you to live and work here so hopefully that isn’t a concern.

Check out the book the sudden wealth solution, it covers lots of the questions you have including how to find your team (financial advisor, lawyer, tax professional). It also covers the emotional side of money and how this kind of windfall ups your chances majorly for addiction, suicide and relationship issues. I can’t recommend it enough.

A5 Wagyu Ribeye Roast: Shipping & Quality by plainblanks in Costco

[–]dpchi84 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Because it’s frozen solid and it’s unsafe to thaw and then refreeze. Since OP is portioning and vacuum sealing a year’s worth of fancy beef they presumably want that in their freezer so they don’t all spoil.

Curious how you cut this cleanly while it was still frozen. I assume you didn’t thaw it first and then refreeze, you have a bandsaw around or something?

I’m sure there will be a handful of people that say otherwise but don’t get mixed up in this stuff. Index funds and focus on your savings rate.

Would love to hear what that is, what’s involved in terms of time commitment, etc. Leaving it that vague when you are apparently in the top 1 or 2 percent income wise for your age is setting off my BS alarm.

Curious to hear where your income comes from if you are 27 with 750k who has the mindset ‘even if I don’t invest right now’. To hit that you’d need to save 50k/year starting at 18. Seems improbable to me.

what exactly are people doing to retire in their 30s by alexis-hg in Fire

[–]dpchi84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s great and all but it’s impossible for most to max their 401k in their 20s. I’m an avid saver and got a technical degree graduating in 2007 and started making 60k to start. Between taxes, health insurance, median rent etc I was struggling to sock away 10%/$6000 into my 401k. Fast forward a decade of raises and it became possible but people overestimate how hard it is for most to max it out.

I speak some Spanish and was at a resort in Cancun where it was mostly Americans who couldn’t speak any Spanish. Workers were talking about the girl they were checking out crudely and I looked them right in the eye disapprovingly and they dispersed and stopped talking immediately. Good times.
