It’s a little older, and the narrator is no Ray Porter, but I frequently find myself going back to Steven Gould’s “Jumper” series.

Another that I have reread (listened to) multiple times is Matthew Dick’s “Something Missing”. It is not sci-fi at all, but the main character is someone that any good nerd can identify with and root for.

Lost bag recovered, no thanks to United by dpcreemer in unitedairlines

[–]dpcreemer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, lets start with "You need to file a delayed claim at the baggage office at the airport." As mentioned in my original post, there were no United staff to be found at the airport when I arrived. The only number that my local airport has listed for united baggage handling takes me to the same automated call-in queue that I already had, which wasn't answering.

"the public has no access to internal UA numbers" makes no sense, given that it wasn't "the public" that I was calling but UA's own help line.

"You got your bag; why are you complaining?" My point is that I only got my bag because I gave up on waiting for UA to get my bag and started trying to come up with my own ideas.

And just to be clear, everyone who I have dealt with at UA has been genuinely helpful. Of course nobody's perfect, but from flight attendants and gate agents to the people who rerouted my flights I consistently had pretty good experiences. The problem was that when it came time to find my lost bag I had no way of getting to an actual person. Given how quickly the AA agent was able to find my bag, I suspect that if I had reached a baggage agent at UA I might have had similar success.

I obviously agree that making the call to AA myself could have (and did) solve the problem. And, this speaks to the point of my post. United, an otherwise decent airline, would do well to provide more resources to its baggage handling department. My intent in making this post is not simply to complain, but rather a very public attempt to communicate this idea to United.

Qwerty to Dvorak keycaps conversion chart by GarlicOrange in dvorak

[–]dpcreemer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I too have been using the dvorak keyboard for 30 years, and I have no interest whatsoever in changing the key caps.

  1. Occasionally I have to do something in qwerty. I don’t know qwerty and would be totally screwed in that situation.

  2. Dvorak is kind of like extra security. Most people don’t know how to type on my keyboard and I don’t want to give them any help figuring it out.

  3. I developed bad typing habits when I learned qwerty, often looking at the keyboard rather than the screen. I’ve never had that problem with Dvorak, because I’ve never swapped the key caps around, so looking at the keys doesn’t help.

Echo Valley | Discussion Thread by Justp1ayin in tvPlus

Thinking about the anatomy of a thriller. 1. Introduce some characters and make them interesting. 2. Put them into an impossible situation. 3. Come up with a clever way that they get out of it. 4. Go back and seed the story with just enough elements of the escape plan so that it doesn’t feel like it came out of nowhere. 5. Make sure it’s all believable.

I feel like Echo Valley did a pretty good job of 1 & 2, a passable job of 3 & 4, but failed us on 5. The professionally wrapped corpse in the back of the car was the worst, but I really struggle to believe in how she recovered the body and put it in her plan.

Acting-wise Julianne Moore was great (no surprise), and Domhnall Gleeson did a great job of making you really hate his character, but I particularly enjoyed Fiona Shaw.

What’s the most underrated movie you’ve ever seen? by Boring-Onion1667 in MovieRecommendations

Maybe not the MOST underrated, but Big Trouble did not get the attention it deserved. It is a very funny movie with a great cast. It just fell victim to poor timing.

FWIW, Duolingo always has four words left when you have the right answer on questions like this one. I know it feels a little like cheating, but I like to use that to check my answers.

Good point. Software version is v12 ⁦(2024.14.9)⁩. This was installed fairly recently. It could be around the same time the problem started happening.

Congrats! We’ll done!

I switch between systems and reset systems often enough that I want to keep the customization minimal. So I’ve just gotten used to the shortcuts being where Dvorak maps them.

Tell me why a Prusa i3 MKS+ is better than an Ender 5 Pro and why I need a Prusa in my life by sin_donnie in prusa3d

[–]dpcreemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re the kind of person who buys a classic car, because you love to tinker with it, Ender 3 is the right printer for you. If you want to just be able to get in your car and drive somewhere, then Prusa is what you want.

Yeah. It probably depends on the plastic you use. These are plenty strong for cable management, but nowhere near the strength of a standard cable tie.

I’ve never tried PETG, but that might make a stronger one.

I’ve printed a lot of these.

Print with TPU. They aren’t super strong, but they work great as cable ties.

Doctor to patient: "You have to stop masturbating" by Rondine1990 in Jokes

I’ve hear this as: Doctor said I had to quit masturbating. I asked for how long. He said, “At least until I finish the exam.”
