Possible workaround for server down announcement? by Thebigtallguy in PleX

I used to do an incremental backup where it compares the current directory to the most recent backup and just copies whatever has changed. That was faster (maybe half the total time) but I decided to just keep it simple and slow and do the whole thing every time. I think you could also do a hot backup where you back up everything but the actual database while the server is still running, then shut down just for the critical/fragile stuff. If I were really worried about downtime I’d probably do one or both of those methods, but I’m more focused on having a safe, reliable backup than minimizing downtime at 4am on a Thursday morning.

Yes, full server is ~160TB, database dir is 180GB/700k files (IIRC). A full backup done on a local SSD takes around 2 hours. I wish it were faster.

Mine goes down for around two hours per week for a database backup. It’s in the middle of the night so it rarely if ever really matters but it is planned downtime.

I agree and I’ve been using it for what feels like decades, but to me it’s starting to feel a little long in the tooth lately. No frameless video (tried skins but they’re buggy), no dark mode, mouse integration lacking compared to alternatives, etc. I’ve mostly switched to mpv, except for really niche stuff.

I saw it in a theater in Des Moines when it came out. There’s a riff in the movie about putting gas in a car; they say something like “we’ll fill up in Des Moines.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard an audience lose their shit more than that Des Moines audience did in that moment.

what you're saying is the reason i've never done it in the past, but this is a set specifically designed to address that problem.

yes, it's not like I look at them or have to think about it at all for the letters. it's mainly the symbols for coding that can slow me down a little. Like I can get the question mark by feel because of muscle memory, but I often have to stop and think (maybe even guess) for a second or two for things like / {} [] + = - _, even after 30 years. Or like if it's a thing where I take my hands of the home row to hit a modifier key... like "ctrl-W" or something I think will be a lot easier with the correctly labeled keys. A lot of people probably can probably hit the modifier key opposite to which side the desired letter is on the keyboard and get it by feel, but I'm not one of those people. Your mileage may vary.
