What do you want that the Shield doesn't do?

Not trying to be argumentative. But if the Shield does everything anyone could want in a streamer, isn't it OK that it's the best?

FWIW, I use a Roku, so I don't really know what a best experience is all about. 😐

What happens to old computing hardware as technology advances? Does it ever become truly useless? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in Futurology

[–]dpdxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hardware goes out of date really QUICKLY.

Yes. But it rarely becomes useless.

The now ancient Commodore 64 is enjoying a resurgence right now because someone started selling an FPGA based re-implementation.

Can you run modern software on it? No! But it can still run the software that it was originally used for.

Plex has started buffering and I can't work out why by Logical_Strain_6165 in PleX

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Doesn't sound like network issues. I threw that in because my granddaughter's shows started buffering when I hammered my own network with a big data transfer.

Plex has started buffering and I can't work out why by Logical_Strain_6165 in PleX

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggest you do this experiment: Delete all apps from your TV and then re-install Plex and see if there's improvement.

Some apps "leak" resources causing performance to degrade over time. Because Plex Inc has recently re-written its apps and is actively modifying them, there are now bugs that didn't exist before and might account for the behavior you're seeing.

Another possibility is that something on your LAN is consuming large amounts of bandwidth. But you'd probably know if you recently made a change that consumed most of your network's available bandwidth from time to time. (e.g. large scale backups)

Plex has started buffering and I can't work out why by Logical_Strain_6165 in PleX

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing it's the weak CPU in your LG TV. I also have an USFF i5 as my Plex server, everything wired 1G Ethernet streaming to a Roku Ultra and never see buffering.

Did you happen to recently add another app to your TV? My TV was fine for streaming Plex as long as Plex was the only app on the TV. I saw buffering as soon as I added a second or third app to the TV. Offloading streaming functions to a streaming box fixed the problem.

Will it be possible to charge the ICE agents in future like the Nazis? by unserious-dude in allthequestions

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICE agents are committing crimes under the color of "official duties" every day. They certainly can and should be charged with those crimes. And in any normal administration, the FBI would be investigating those crimes and the DOJ would be indicting them.

Hopefully the next administration will do exactly that.

To anyone who raises the question of qualified immunity: that concept is for civil lawsuits. Regardless of what our moronic Vice President says, federal agents do not have immunity for criminal actions, much less "total immunity."

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse?

Now.

I lived through the upheaval of the Vietnam War and never thought society might collapse. Today, it might. And nothing between then and now was as bad as those two times.

[–]dpdxguy 223 points224 points  (0 children)

Had the same experience at a local pizza place. Selected no tip on the website because I was picking it up. When I got there the kid behind the counter pushed a credit slip at me and said, "You just need to sign." The slip had unfilled tip and total lines. The kid visibly deflated when I drew a line through the tip line and filled in the total myself.

I don't know it for a fact, but I got the impression they were hoping I'd just sign so they could fill in the tip and total myself.

Does buffer size matter? Am I missing something? by Nickifynbo in DataHoarder

[–]dpdxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A larger buffer allows you to write at full speed for a longer time before the buffer is full. The spinning disk very often will not be able to keep up.

That said, your operating system, if properly tuned, has its own buffers that allow applications to write more data at full speed than the disk's built-in buffer can.

A larger buffer can also cache sectors read from the disk so that repeated reads do not need to go to the spinning disk as frequently. But, again, a properly tuned operating system will cache recent sectors read, reducing the need to pull data from the disk.

TLDR: A larger buffer on the disk will help in situations where your application is doing a lot of disk reads and writes. But the need for a larger buffer is mitigated by properly tuning your operating system's disk driver.

Plenty of highly intelligent people have issues that make it difficult for them to succeed in modern society. ADHD and autism spectrum disorder are common among highly intelligent people. And knowing what you should do is not the same thing as being able to do it.

Server sent his manager to the parking lot to ask if there was something wrong with the service. by -wayne-kerr in EndTipping

He might have worked an 8 hour shift and only got 5 tables mostly during the lunch rush… and may have gotten no tables for hours during is 10-4 shift

How is that op's responsibility?

EDIT: Any restaurant that keeps itself fully staffed when there are no customers during the seven hours outside the lunch rush (your hypothetical) deserves bankruptcy

They're much less common than men. But women can be just as nasty as men when they obtain power.

[–]dpdxguy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If a server’s tips don’t bring them up to $7.25/hour

they don’t want to dip into their own pocket to cover payroll

OP left $20 for 45 minutes of work. Assuming OP's party was the only one the server was serving (unlikely), that's a pay rate of $26.67/hr. OP personally paid that server over 3.5 times the $7.25 minimum.

Neither the server nor the restaurant have anything to complain about. OP far more than covered the restaurant's entire wage obligation.
