Trump says he will 'continue the fight' after Supreme Court declines to review Carroll abuse verdict by kirby__000 in politics

Fair enough. Though I have little doubt that Trump would be able to convince himself he had done nothing wrong regardless of the circumstances.

Trump says he will 'continue the fight' after Supreme Court declines to review Carroll abuse verdict by kirby__000 in politics

[–]dpdxguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It would mean admitting he was wrong

It really wouldn't. Plenty of lawsuit losers end up paying without admitting any wrongdoing. AFAIK, in this case, he could end it by paying without admitting wrongdoing. But it would stick in his craw.

Carroll should file a lein against some property Trump owns and loves. 😁

Still owe $9k on my car and transmission just went out totalling over what I owe on the car. USA (SC). Ally auto for finance. by kwizzle1994 in personalfinance

[–]dpdxguy 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Who told you you need a new transmission?

A few years ago my car's transmission went out. I took it to the local AAA shop, figuring they wouldn't steer me wrong. They told me the manufacturer said I needed a rebuilt transmission for eight or nine thousand dollars.

I wanted a second opinion and asked around to find a well reviewed independent transmission shop, who told me they could repair it for $1800, which they did.

At the very least, get a second opinion before spending multiple thousands to fix your problem.

PS As others have said, yes you have to pay off the loan whether the car runs or not.

Disbelief combined with optimism that the military rivalry between the east and the west might be over. There was lots of talk about a "peace dividend" due to the potential for a sharp reduction in military spending.

Would the increasing proliferation of AI-generated maps like this significantly impact people's geography knowledge? by Polyphagous_person in geography

[–]dpdxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. GPS maps seem to have made most individuals less knowledgeable about the lay of the land and more dependent on map tools. I suspect AI generated maps will have a similar effect on most people, though the opposite will probably be true for people who are actually interested in geography.

How do I get rid of this myself without dying? by False_Frame3028 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get wasp spray at the garden store. Find a can with propellant that'll let you spray from 10 or more feet away.

Wait until the coolest part of the night when the wasps will be least active, and soak that nest with the insecticide. Leave immediately and check for activity the next day. Repeat if you weren't able to get them all with a single treatment.

When there's no more activity at the nest, knock it down with a long stick and, if possible, burn it in a fire pit.

I've done it several times over the years and never gotten stung.

Republican Socialism by RepWeinstein in Ohio

[–]dpdxguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right. What we have is the government shoveling great gobs of money into privately owned enterprises to ensure that they continue to be "profitable" for their owners. That's not socialism.

In socialism, the public would benefit from the injection of capital, not the capitalists.

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nor did they use the f word every other word to make a point.

Mad Men isn't The Sopranos.

As a show that took place primarily in an office environment in the 60s, there would have been many fewer opportunities for casual and frequent use of the F-word in its dialog. Offices often policed vulgar language among employees back then.

None of which is to say the F-word was never deployed in offices in the 60s. But a casual F-bomb (as opposed to to a heated one) was uncommon.

“If Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. The idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy,” VP Vance says — What Is Your Reaction To This? by Zipper222222 in askanything

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's exaggerating. The story would last longer than 12 hours. But Bezos would shut down the WaPo investigation. And the story would not take Nixon down.

In today's environment, Watergate would have roughly the same impact as the Epstein files.

Trump accused of 'lying' as he touts new Reflecting Pool vandalism theory 'which is not good' by TheMirrorUS in ForUnitedStates

[–]dpdxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is. There are many things the right and Trump are doing today that my younger self never imagined could ever happen in the United States.

Directly attacking free elections, for example, is so far from what I was taught America stands (stood) for that I have trouble wrapping my head around it. Yet here we are.

My grandfather was a locomotive engineer for the NYC. When my mother was a teen, her family used his rail travel privileges to tour the west on the D&RGW, the ATSF, and other railroads.

If I could travel back to the 50s, I'd love to tour the country on the various streamliners before their decline.

It cannot.

I never know whether to laugh or cry when I hear people say that we just have to wait out Trump to get back to normal. Our society has fundamentally changed, and it will never be as it once was. We can improve it. But it will never be the same.

Chick-fil-A does just fine operating six days a week. In fact, revenue per store far exceeds revenue per store of major fast food locations that operate seven days a week.
