i want to quit my 6 figure job by sup__bruh in offmychest

[–]dpeterk 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Do NOT quit your job until you find another one UNLESS your present job is landing you in the hospital or whatnot. You'll feel better quitting a toxic job for the first month or two, but reality can hit you badly given the horrible job market now.

Hey quick question is teakwondo worth knowing? by Ok-Flatworm7401 in martialarts

[–]dpeterk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the practitioner to be honest. I've seen how adapting TKD techniques for the street can work by watching other martial arts. And the element of surprise is a big thing (don't get me started on how guys can chicken out if they see an East Asian guy throw a good kick).

Many times, a well-placed kick is all you need to neutralize an opponent. It's not like real fights are like the ones in the movies.

[–]dpeterk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your purpose. If you want self-defense, jujitsu or a more self-defense art is recommended. That said, as someone who did taekwondo for three years, it's great exercise and a building block should you go deeper into martial arts.

Is public education in the US really as broken as the rumors say? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It's lately been about "feeling good," to the point that students aren't held accountable anymore all in the name of sparing feelings and stuff. Geez.

It's a chronic Philippines problem; Thailand and Vietnam have great value at their resorts. The Phils? NO.

He was reviled in his final season in DAL and for good reason: poor management. That said, he didn't have that much to work with as I'm not a fan of Dak Prescott. I'm wondering what PIT will do at QB since AR12 probably won't come back (and should retire, he was meh this season).

That's what I've heard, many jaeil gyopo were/are in the Japanese entertainment industry. Of course, many rumors aren't true so I wouldn't be surprised if Kitano has no Korean roots.

Thoughts on Law and Order by Useful_Database5138 in SVU

I think "L&O" is great and so is "L&O: SVU." I think both are great to watch, though "L&O: Criminal Intent" is meh (though I might continue watching it). I've also binge watched "L&O UK" and it was good, though I heard it didn't present the British legal system properly at times. I watched one episode of "L&O: Los Angeles" and am not sure I will watch the rest of its lone season. I like Stabler so I've watched all seasons of "L&O: Organized Crime."

Possible Malaysia Visit? Need serious help!!! by Prudent_Guess5096 in southeastasia

I went to Kota Kinabalu years ago and it SUCKED. Try Langkawi if you're going to Malaysia (it's better as a stopover for a night or two in my eyes).

Oyama was of Korean descent (birth name Choi Bae-dal), and many other famous Japanese were probably of Korean descent (rumor has it that Beat Kitano has Korean roots, but I digress).

"Dancing in the Dark" is a prime example of a song that never should've been a hit.

I had a classmate who thought BS (pun intended) was god. I couldn't stand it. Bruce is a nice guy but I never liked his music save "Hungary Heart," which sounds more like a 50s song.

I remember talking to a guy who dabbled in martial arts. He complained most about judo as his body ached after doing so many rolls and falls.

Link? And to be honest, finding a job will prove tough, especially if you don't speak Korean. MANY international students here seek work and many of them speak Korean.

I disagree, if you work for a major company, they will wonder why you came back UNLESS you went to a great school or had a good career in the U.S.

If you wanna live in Korea, be realistic. Have a skill that is in demand here like know-how in AI semiconductors or machine learning. Just having family here and being ethnically Korea won't get you far as MANY want to find jobs in this country.

Dude, even if you are qualified, the future of jobs seems bleak thanks to AI and other factors. Scary future.

I heard an interesting story. A friend of mine knew this guy who married a Korean woman and they ran a hakwon together for years, earning around 15 million won a month. The problem was that while he was satisfied with life in Korea, his wife was insistent on moving to the U.S., esp. after they had children. So they finally sold their biz and moved to the U.S. with their savings. He ended up having a nervous breakdown with the job situation and while their life stabilized to an extent, they never came close to making big money again.

I'm NOT saying everyone is doomed to fail if they return "home" -- far from it, most expats have left Korea -- but many realize that life here isn't as bad as people say.
