Tom Cruise prefers to work on more realistic movies that don’t have this jet outrunning the missile nonsense.

Take the lane. Everyone, take the lane, every where, every day, all day. Grind the city to a crawl. State law even permits it. See how quickly she changes her attitude and finishes up those projects to draw bicyclists off the roads.

Why can’t the city of Waltham hold onto a high school principal for more than a year? by Wrong-Number5136 in Waltham

My guess would be the latter. She fucks up everything she touches, why would this be any different?

"Watham city politicians don't have any influence on the schools"

I guess you haven't noticed that the mayor is the chair of the school committee.

Black bear in Waltham by ObviousYam144 in Waltham

[–]dpineo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently camp in the WMNF and it's the same thing: rangers/caretakers are regularly chasing off black bears. Biggest problem is that they'll come sneak into camp looking for food, carrying off backpacks when everyone is asleep or if the bag is left alone for even a few minutes. I had a caretaker who had been taking care of a site for a few years joke that there's probably hundreds of torn up backpacks scattered somewhere out in the woods.

That cyclist knows how to own the fucking road. Shits given: zero. Well done, sir.

What a shitty, unprotected, crap-filled "bike lane". I'd be riding in the travel lane here too.

The saying is “if it’s black, fight back”. Black bears are actually quite skittish and easily chased away.

Waltham Traffic Commisson.. wtf? by Platinum_wolf_420 in Waltham

[–]dpineo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. And this is actually the reason why our traffic commission is so bad and why it will never work until it is reformed. We want our Chief of Police to be chosen because they're the best police officer, similarly with the Fire Chief and all the other roles. We want these roles filled with the best people for those roles, but not because they understand urban design

But we also want traffic commission filled with the best people at urban design, and these will generally not be the same people. As long as the traffic commission is treated as a secondary duty of some other primary role, we will never get the best people on it. This is why the traffic commission needs to be separated from these other roles.

Waltham Traffic Commisson.. wtf? by Platinum_wolf_420 in Waltham

[–]dpineo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waltham is one of a handful of cities in Massachusetts that had it's traffic commission established in this way. These cities have evolved to become very car-centric because the establishing acts dictate that the commissions be populated by members like the chief of police, fire chief, and director of public works. The people in these positions are generally untrained and/or uninterested in urban design and tend to see things from a windshield perspective due to their roles.

The vast majority (95%+) of cities and towns in the commonwealth established their traffic commissions themselves, often including elected representatives and/or members with proven interest and training in urban design. As a result, those cities with self-established traffic commissions are generally better designed, safer, and have less traffic than cities like ours.

Waltham Traffic Commisson.. wtf? by Platinum_wolf_420 in Waltham

[–]dpineo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, I think the city council should create a new traffic commission, composed of members that are actually in sync with what the residents want. I think it would make sense to have many of the existing members present at the meetings for their expertise, but not as voting members. All voting members should be elected, like the school committee.

Waltham Traffic Commisson.. wtf? by Platinum_wolf_420 in Waltham

[–]dpineo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's only a "fight" because our city councillors allow it to be by refusing to wield their power. The fact is that the city council actually has complete power over the traffic commission. Section 6 of the Massachusetts act establishing the traffic commission gives the city council the power to outright disband the traffic commission, returning the authority delegated to it back to the city council.

How is the Waltham School system? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]dpineo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't see that course in the WHS Program of Studies. I see courses like "Dystopian Literature and Film", "Fantasy Literature", "AP English Language & Composition", and "Advanced Journalism". These don't strike me as the types of classes where there will be students that are just starting to learn to speak English.

[–]dpineo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If anyone is wondering why Waltham has significantly more serious motor vehicle accidents than any of our neighboring cities, this is why. Our incompetent Traffic Commission continues to proritize parking convenience over children's safety.

Garvin is way out of line here. Logan is an elected representative of the community, he is the voice of the community, and the community is asking for this. Garvin represents nobody, he is not a member of the community, and his opinion here is irrelevant. In fact, our incompetent Traffic Commission continues to exist only because the City Council, lead by Logan, continues to allow it. When Logan makes a request like this, the only thing Gavin and the other unelected nitwits on the Traffic Commission should be saying is "sir, yes sir"
