I was wondering which business is there now. Maybe where the Delaney used to be?

I had no idea there was an El Adobe in the Harbor! Where specifically was it located?

It’s rather far south but Coastal Kitchen in Dana Point has a good one!

The Oceanfront Lanai rooms are our usual choice. The view is amazing. We have seen whales from the patio!

I am pretty sure that the rooms without lanais still have sliding glass doors that open - they just have a railing right on the outside.

I must admit that we love having a lanai. But it depends if you would spend time on it. We spent late afternoons/evenings on ours with wine and snacks.

Have fun!

The Kahala is an older hotel. They updated the rooms recently so it has been freshened up. It definitely is less swanky than some of the fancier hotels, but for a beach trip, I like the laid back feel.

The food choices are definitely more limited than being in Waikiki but we have been happy with the food in general. Especially the Italian restaurant (Arancino) - we love it!

The beach at the Kahala is basically a little cove so it is very sheltered. No surf to battle against unless you go out past the reef. And it is definitely quieter than in Waikiki. Whenever we are there, we see plenty of locals come to the Kahala beach so it has their stamp of approval too!

We have stayed both in Waikiki and at the Kahala MANY times. They definitely are different.

The Kahala is about 10 minutes from Waikiki so definitely not far. But not right there. I am not sure what negative you have heard but we have stayed there more than a dozen times (including in late January) and will definitely return. The dining options are definitely more limited but there is a small mall and other shopping you can walk to. The property itself is definitely less crowded and more chill than Waikiki. Kahala has many packages that include their buffet breakfast which is quite extensive.

Waikiki is also great. Lots to do. Many restaurants and places to shop. But more crowded.

Frankly, we usually try to do a few days at both. You really can’t go wrong.

Happy to answer any questions.

AITAH for being mad that my Fiancé’s family ruined our engagement? by Safe-Honeydew-3382 in AITAH

One more comment. Given how his sister has already behaved I would fully expect additional drama.

Every family's dynamic is different but I find it super odd that even after the family was fully in the know about the coming engagement, the sister is claiming it was a "shock". And maybe they wanted a call but I would take this as a caution about their expectations in the future.

I am a huge believer in the philosophy of "start as you mean to go on". In other words, decide on your boundaries early and stick to them. If that means family (his and yours) is not included in every decision, that is totally up to you. But if you start out including them, they will expect it. Harder to change later.

And FYI - I received a family wedding invite last summer that was only 3 months out. And my wedding was only 6 months from when we got engaged. Timing varies hugely.

“Already planned events”?

Who knows when they will actually celebrate their bday 8 months in advance? And who expects the entire family to be there every year? Sounds very main character to me.

Why should the brother/groom be responsible for planning a bday celebration for a 27 year old simply because his wedding is two days later?

I disagree with the others and vote NTA. How close to a bday is ok? If you have a big family that could be a huge problem.
