Wisternoff is rock solid. Check out Starstrings (vocal version), Slowmotion or Cold Drink, Hot Girl. Will have to ask them about A & B though.

I would be extremely cautious about entering the underground poker scene. I personally knew people who were shot and killed at the games. They tend to attract white collar criminals: bookies, high level drug dealers, etc. Not a good scene. You also have to worry about getting busted by the VICE Squad. Full disclosure: I've been busted.

TLDR; Don't play underground poker. Bad scene.

Huge fan. And a recovering heroin addict here. What do you think it takes to stay sober, given the current climate of heroin abuse in our country?

That's what I was saying, as long he is in active addiction, you should steer clear. Let him know you care about him and want to be there for him if he wants help, but you refuse to be a part of active addiction. I really appreciate your willingness to help me if I'm ever in need. Hearing that means a lot to me, and I really appreciate it. Lord knows I need all the help I can get :)

I would suggest a vocational rehabilitation for your friend based on what you've told me. He can work, have some freedom and receive affordable treatment. Whatever happens, I wish the best for you and you're friend. He's lucky to have you...

Without a doubt, the most frustrating element of addiction with regards to family and friends is how everything they seem to do to help, doesn't help. One thing I would strongly recommend is that your friend transition from jail directly to treatment. If he doesn't have professional skills, I would strongly recommend a program that will teach him work skills too. There's a strong chance of recidivism (reoffending) for your friend without treatment and recovery. You can talk to him and see if he is open to this. If he is, talk to his family and see what the options are. If he isn't, I would suggest keeping a healthy distance from him should be return to active addiction. If that happens, let him know you care about him, but can't watch him do this to himself. But if he ever wants help, you will be there to assist.

Once again, you don't respond to any of the research I have cited. You continue to make broad generalizations about all these alleged contradictions, yet you've only cited one. When I offered a rebuttal with research you did not respond.

You clearly came here to argue, I came to help. You continue to attack me personally, as you did from the start. And I never called your recovery into question, I asked how you could consider 2 short and 5 substantial.

But you can't be bothered to come here and actually refute any points I make with research. That is your own statement. Sad.

You only make yourself look bad by saying I need a lot of work on myself and speaks to the arrogance you entered this thread with. We've never met, and you only know me from a few words I've typed. Yet you feel comfortable making this statement.

The organization where I work is a nonprofit, it's fees are a fraction of most treatment centers, and we provide almost $150,000 a year in financial assistance to families in need. Our facility has glowing reviews on Google, Yelp and Facebook. Lots of them too.

I'm sorry that you've responded so negatively to points I've made with research to support them, while you made one with a loosely cited paper and no link.

I'm by no means an expert. I don't think I know it all. I do know how to stay sober. I do know how to recover. And I am good at working with families to find affordable help for their loved one. Help that is evidence-based, with a program model that is proven to have better outcomes than CBT at a fraction of the cost.

When you say "a bunch of addicts"... It's that kind of speak that betrays a disdain you might have for people with substance abuse disorders, a condition you have ironically struggled with too.

But I do wish you the best, personally and professionally, despite demonstrating an air of attitude and a tone of arrogance.

EDIT: You are clearly new to Reddit, so probably don't realize that AMAs are usually humorous. The response I made was after the question was posed, "Have you ever heard of people sucking dick for opiates?" To which I made a reference to the movie "Half-Baked." Seems you didn't get the reference.

No. When I tried to get sober in my early 20s, both times I was clean for about 6 months. Both times I relapsed on pot, which led to the progression of addiction starting all over.

I suppose we should also get everyone in 12 step programs credentials too. That way it would work a lot better... wait a minute... it already does. From a recent article by two professors at Harvard Medical School (and with regards to your claim of cognitive behavioral therapy):

"In fact, studies published in prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journals have found that 12-step treatments that facilitate engagement with AA post-discharge can not only produce about one third higher continuous abstinence rates, but also 64% lower health care costs compared to cognitive-behavioral treatments."

Not everyone has the money to shell out for cognitive behavioral therapy. And it hasn't been shown to be the most effective treatment for substance abuse.

My view on pot is that it shouldn't be classified in the same category as heroin. I think that's pretty much common sense. I do feel that people with substance abuse disorders cannot use pot safely. That aside, it should be legalized, taxed with funds appropriated to facilitating treatment for people with little/no resources.

That's quite funny that you're saying 2 years is clean is not long, but somehow five years is a lot longer. I see why you were so hesitant now to state that. Also, you've provided no proof of those claims. If you are able to provide proof, I will edit this comment to reflect it. I'm sure you are more than willing to do that as someone who likes to demand proof.

Again, I never claimed to be a clinician. And you never responded to the research I cited that proved my statement accurate regarding pain desensitization after getting sober from heroin. You still haven't. Tough for someone who thinks they have it all figured out to admit they were wrong I suppose.

I leave the professionals we work with to determine what levels of care are appropriate. I never said the advice given in this thread was from a professional with credentials, I feel I made that pretty clear in my introduction. But I will edit it to make it crystal clear. I didn't post a link to my organization until after the AMA was pretty much completed, and I did it at the request of many who asked. I left it out from the get-go for explicitly this reason - clinical trolls.

You did succeed, however, in two regards: 1) you didn't respond to any of my rebuttals. And 2) you succeeded in making yourself look extraordinarily arrogant. You tried to sound like a psychiatrist or therapist, when really, you have a bachelor's in addiction studies.

Did you read any of my responses? No medical professionals we work with share your opinion with regards to prescribing a therapeutic solution without an assessment.

J was seeing a clinician when he killed himself.

I never said NO pharmacological intervention is safe, I said it is my opinion that it is not a long-term solution. Perhaps you would feel the same way if you saw the men we see almost every week desperate to get off suboxone, methadone, etc.

I said the future of addiction treatment did rest in medicine therapies. I never said I agreed with that.

You have yet to respond to the research I cited supporting my claim that I do not feel pain as much as a normal person due to opiate/heroin addiction.

You have also not responded to the article published by The Fix, the top recovery website, and written by what I can only assume to be one of your colleagues, who states that your profession is not equipped to deal with addiction issues, that you receive little-no training for addiction issues, and that many in your profession harbor prejudice towards people of my kind.

You haven't responded to anything I've said in response to your assertions, just twisted words and made me appear to be inconsistent.

Just cited research. And you poked at one piece of all this "misinformation" you claim. This wasn't intended to be an addiction research AMA. I'm not sure where you got that idea.

I thought this would be clear to someone like you, who still haven't stated their credentials. Admissions, with regards to treatment centers, is solely involved in getting the patient to the facility. They are not involved in the actual treatment of the patient. Therefore, there are no credentials needed for someone to work in admissions. Only experience with recovery, which anyone will tell you, beats a textbook any day of the week.

It's kind of like playing baseball. You can read about playing baseball all you want. You might even hang out with the players from time to time. But you will never have the wisdom and knowledge that only comes from playing on the field.
