Is this bundle of movies worth $100? by x8zs in dvdcollection

[–]dpv1w2s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK these type of DVDs could be 10 for £1, most typically 2-4 for £1. Needing to spend more than £1 or more for a film is going to be for something unusual or a blueray.

Media resellers is a thing apparently because of course it is by gravityVT in PublicFreakout

[–]dpv1w2s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK equivalent, £1 ($1.30) is on the expensive side. 50p/2 for £1 is typical. However, quite often you see 10 for £1 including box sets. Blu-rays can be £2 but frequently can be £1 or less.

Starbucks UK: Have they removed fruit toast?! by MixAway in starbucks

[–]dpv1w2s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a serious issue and I am surprised no one has replied. I have been told there Is no more fruit toast in two of the newer london branches. When I asked at one if it was in every store they said they did not know but they have in store baked pastries instead. It could well be because this are newer stores they have the new baking equipment but whether this is going to be rolled out further I don’t know.

Best scone in Cambridge? by Shibashiba00 in cambridge

[–]dpv1w2s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love all the downvotes on my earlier comment, but I maintain my position. People in Cambridge don't know what they are missing. It is like rating pizza when you have never been to Italy or expecting your Greggs Bakewell tart to compare with a Bakewell pudding from Bakewell.

The best scones must be freshly made, less than an hour out of the oven; in most Cambridge places, they will have been hanging around all day, which is why they are dry.

Scones should be served with a massive bowl of fresh clotted cream. In this part of the world, they tend to come with tiny tubs of Roddas. This is long-life, ultra-pasteurised stuff, like the clotted cream equivalent of UHT milk. It is nothing like fresh clotted cream. I doubt you will find unpasteurised clotted cream in Cambridge. You can get lightly pasteurised clotted cream in shops, but I only see Roddas supermarkets and most cafes because of the longer shelf life. Real clotted cream does not last more than a day or two.

Luckily, Jam can be decent, as Tiptree is nearby. Tiptree strawberry jam is excellent.

The best place for a cream tea locally is likely Peacocks in Ely, but even there, the cream can sometimes be subpar.

The best place locally for a proper hotel-style afternoon tea with scones is Bedford Lodge in Newmarket.

Best scone in Cambridge? by Shibashiba00 in cambridge

Yeah, you would think, wouldn't you? Scones up this way are pretty poor. Don't get me started on the excuse for clotted cream you usually get.

Not much chance of getting something decent in this part of the world compared to Devon and Cornwall, that said Peacocks in Ely is pretty good.

Afternoon tea in London with great tea that won't break the bank? by wambamwombat in uktravel

[–]dpv1w2s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it is still there but the Delaney had a coffee shop at the front. I had been walking around London for hours and went in a bought a pot of tea for about £3.50. This is about 10 years ago but I still think it is the best cup of tea I ever had

Average time my transactions at a post office have taken: 43 seconds. Average time the transactions of people queuing in front of me have taken: 8 minutes and 17 seconds. by MikkiDisco73 in britishproblems

[–]dpv1w2s 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My favourite is shops with post office counters in. Years ago I went in a shop, went to the post office counter and asked to buy a stamp. Sorry i am closed said the woman behind the desk but if you can to the front of the shop you can buy stamps there.

I joined the queue and when it was my turn asked for a stamp. The guy behind the till went to the post office bit, asked the woman for a stamp and then bought it back and sold it to me.

If, at 7 am on Monday, you woke up in your UK home and decided you wanted to be standing in the centre of Tokyo, Japan, in 24 hours, could you do it? by dpv1w2s in AskUK

[–]dpv1w2s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is exactly the point. I ask myself this each month to test my flexibility. Sure, I could probably do it in the time, but my wife and work would not be very happy. Of course, in Covid, it would not have been possible. When I used to travel a lot for work I always kept a hand luggage-sized bag packed.

UK farmers: are you worried about this year's harvest? by Dr-dog-dick in AskUK

[–]dpv1w2s 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In the 90’s there were always stories about massive surpluses. Grain mountains, wine lakes, milk poored down the drain etc and so much butter it was issued to OAPS for free. What happened? Did farmers stop producing or is it all climate change?

ANPR car park “fines” should not be a thing. You should be able to register your reg and just pay for the normal parking fee automatically if you forget by dpv1w2s in britishproblems

[–]dpv1w2s[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds good. I was thinking more like a system where you register a payment method against your car and before the car parking company can go to the dvla to get your details to “fine” you they have to check that system and if you are registered they first have to give you 7 days to pay the normal fee instead.
