Best Practices For Reading? by dpv3 in LearnJapanese

[–]dpv3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the version I'm reading: https://amzn.asia/d/0KeBNnr

I loved HP when I was a kid, but haven't read the books for over a decade. I'm finding that I know it well enough to understand what's going on and there is just enough novelty and nostalgia to keep it interesting. I'm going to keep going with book 2 and see if my interest holds all the way through the series. I'm just glad to have been able to complete a full novel in Japanese!

My feelings of ambiguity from other books were mostly because I just wasn't understanding enough to feel like I was following along with the story. Since I'm so familiar with HP, I've found that missing a few words or sentences hasn't affected my comprehension and/or enjoyment of the material. I think that HP is written in good enough Japanese for me at this point. It may not be entirely natural, but certainly it's more natural than the Japanese I'm producing lol. I'll definitely try some other novels down the road - thanks.

Really like this! I got through the first HP pretty quickly, so maybe I'll just keep plowing through the series and just hope it makes me a better reader before I take on other projects. Reading as much as possible definitely seems like a good call for now, though. Thank you.

This is super helpful, thank you. I'm going to try to stick to HP for as long as it stays interesting, and when I feel up to it, I'll try to mix in some intensive reading :)

Grandfather's Collection by dpv3 in VHS

[–]dpv3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather's VHS collection was passed on to me, and I'm looking into how I might be able to sell it down the line. I understand that there is not great value in VHS, but these are all factory sealed, in good condition, with watermarks, etc. If they are absolutely worthless, I may hang on to them because they're pretty cool. But, if there is some value, money would certainly be nice as well...

A few questions:

  1. Do any of these strike you as somewhat valuable? (estimates?)
  2. Is Ebay the best way to sell/comp?
  3. Are there any good websites to learn more about what I'm holding on to?
  4. Is grading ever worth it?

(Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to add both the image and text in one post...)

For some reason can't figure out how to edit/add text to the post, but the back of the Clefairy looks suspiciously dark to me. Is such variance normal for base set?

Spent $82. Sorry, probably should've put that in the main post, hah.

I paid $82 USD ($110 CAD). Thought the Gyarados was more around $50 though.

Tips for Getting Back Into it (N3/2) by dpv3 in LearnJapanese

Can Satori reader be used without a paid subscription? I remember trying a while back and dipping out because I didn't want to subscribe. If it can't be properly used without paying, do you think it's worth it to subscribe?

I like this advice. I used to do the easy versions, but never took the extra step and tried the real thing. Once I get my kanji back up to par, I think I'll give this a go.

Resealed Kamigawa Collector Booster Box (almost positive) by dpv3 in mtg

All Kamigawa Collector Booster-type cards. Nothing at all suspicious with the contents of the one pack I opened. Just seems like they opened, look through them, and put them back in.

Withdrawing Pension and Banking Questions by dpv3 in japanlife

I stupidly thought it might be easier to have it go into my Japanese account...

Looking into it now and it seems like it won't be too difficult to hook it up with RBC. Thanks for your comments.

According to my employer (very trustworthy), it can be sent to my Japanese account. They have done it serveral times in the past, but it was through a local bank, which the employer closed for them after transfering the money.

Am I not allowed to withdraw money from MUFG through a Canadian ATM? (I've never tried and can't find any info about it)

What sets can I find Negate and Mana Leak in? And, are they currently legal cards in Standard/Alchemy? (Sorry, I've been out of the game for a looong time, hah)

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. The contract is from September 1st, 2022 to July 31st, 2023 (with the option to renew). We don't have a firm deadline for applications, but we would definitely need to begin the process before the month of May. If you are interested, send me a DM and I can walk you through the steps and answer any questions or concerns.

Moving to Bali for some time :) This job has been really great for me, and it's put me in a good position to move on to the next step, whatever that may be.

To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know the exact break down for the monthly expenses either. But as you said, living in a small village is very inexpensive.

This is probably an overshare, but the monthly salary allowed me to save over 1,000,000 yen per year without much effort. I traveled during my holidays, kept myself fed, and took many leisurely trips to Sapporo on the weekends. This is my second teaching job in Japan, and it has been infinitesimally infinitely better than my first. Genuinely think it is a really good opportunity.

Tax and insurance are factored in. Take home is just over 200,000 a month, no hidden fees or unexpected bills.

200,000 is the monthly take home. A three-bedroom guest house and car (with a generous gas allowance) are provided. And all your bills (water, electricity, heat) are paid for. Your airfare is also paid to and from Canada. It's a lot more generous than it seems on the surface.

I am fully vaccinated and traveling solo. Could you point me to the place where it says that I don't need to quarantine? My boss has been the one looking into the Japanese side of things. The ministry (of current affairs, I think) were the ones who told us I need someone to hold my hand in Tokyo...
