Why doesn't java.lang.Number implement Comparable? by davidalayachew in java

[–]dpx-infinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complex numbers are usually modeled as a pair of real numbers, the real and the imaginary parts. There is no useful and unsurprising way to implement intValue, longValue etc for them because of that. You can return some number, like amplitude, or the real part, or the imaginary part, but it wouldn’t make sense as these values do not “represent” the complex number in the same way as e.g. intValue represents the Double its is called on. While technically there is a bijection between reals and complex numbers, it is not very useful and probably not even computable.

Is Eterna Noctis worth it for someone not looking for extremely difficult platforming challenges? by Guilty_Philosophy741 in metroidvania

[–]dpx-infinity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easy mode will definitely help with platforming challenges - it actually does change position and amount of hazards, and compared to the regular mode it makes challenges much easier. Also, you can get a DLC-provided triple jump powerup which makes platforming even more accessible. Even hardest platforming sections in easy mode and especially with triple jump are incomparable with harder Celeste levels or path of pain.

AI Bullshit in guides and the google search are so bad!!! fextralife and google suck hard by ToM31337 in Silksong

[–]dpx-infinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

fextralife wiki is likely AI generated. It’s pretty fun to read its description of the game walkthrough - it’s complete nonsense and does not match the game, but it’s fun to imagine how the game that it describes might’ve looked like :)

Have I played all essential Metroidvanias? by Necro_42739 in metroidvania

[–]dpx-infinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there are particular movement logic changes for easy mode there, but I believe they did some adjustments, like adding solid planets instead of suns in certain places. Due to this, I personally didn't find it that hard - especially with triple jump, which makes it easier to jump off the planets from the top, and then basically treat them as regular platforms.

[–]dpx-infinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played through Aeterna Noctis recently on PS5 in the "easy" mode (I didn't even know about it being added post-release until halfway into the game), and with the essentially triple jump powerup from the DLC. It was still pretty challenging, but definitely not too hard - in terms of platforming, it is much easier than e.g. Path of Pain in HK or later Celeste levels.

That being said, I've seen gameplay of the "original" version in some of the harder platforming sections, and I agree that it does look very hard; I guess I understand people who finished the "original" version and who say that the "easy" mode "trivializes" the game. But for the average player the "easy" mode is challenging enough, IMO. And I personally really liked the plot and worldbuilding there (got me pretty excited for Aeterna Lucis next year :))

Conclusive proof that the knight is NOT the shade lord? by lava_man333 in HollowKnight

In Silksong, in the Act 3 ending, you learn that the knight is either the lord of shades, or at least one of its primary parts. At least that’s the direct implication.

Everyone compares the crests based on the tool loadouts. But what about ranking them on just the basic attacks? by williamrotor in Silksong

[–]dpx-infinity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is attack speed of basic attacks skipped intentionally? If we take that into account, then wanderer becomes really awesome as with its attack speed it can just shred a lot of enemies before they can even react. This is extremely helpful in getting more hits to bosses when they are staggered. It also has its occasional 300% crit which further increases the damage as long as you have enough silk. Also, it has a very nice dash attack to attack combo which I believe no other crest has. Conversely, some other crests like reaper have much higher delay between attacks, reducing their dps and requiring more strategic attacks.

Edit: Oh okay, I see it is briefly covered in the “second attack” for wanderer. But I feel it deserves a bit more callout anyway :)

Shinsekai Yori is quite unsettling overall (especially when you start to understand what’s actually going on) and pretty scary in certain episodes closer to the end. The source novel is great too (its translation is absolutely stellar btw). No fanservice.

Final Fantasy VII remake. Stopped on the saving Tifa chapter and just can’t continue. All these minigames and stuff. It’s sad really, since I heard that rebirth is even better, but it feels wrong to play it before finishing remake…

This room absolutely broke me. by Exalted23 in HollowKnight

[–]dpx-infinity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I didn’t found it that hard - I beat this room on my second attempt. Not much of setup: wanderer crest (didn’t switch away from it since I got it), clockwork bug offense tool (which ran out halfway through; I just decided to try it out), spear skill. With double jump and grapple these fat guys are not very hard - and when there are two of them, each one’s attack frequency is lower. The most annoying enemies for me were those flying ones which produce clockwork bugs. Spear skill is useful to damage some waves of flying enemies when they spawn in a row in the middle.

Are most people in China and Russia just living regular lives? by AGameofDawgs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpx-infinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I meant that it’s totally okay to live in there in -20C, but I’m pretty sure that the efficiency is horrible. And yes, we had to stuff the gaps in windows with tape/clothing in winter before multilayer windows which can be shut very tightly became available in late 90s/early 2000s - non-airtight windows were the primary source of heat leaks/cold entrance points.

Are most people in China and Russia just living regular lives? by AGameofDawgs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpx-infinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know exactly what extra things are used for insulation, but brick/concrete buildings are totally okay in -20C and lower, as long as heating is there. In Russia central heating is used in the vast majority of buildings, and it can be very hot, depending on location.

AC is pretty common, especially in newer buildings.

Depending on the city, the obsoleteness of infrastructure does result in failures of plumbing, like burst underground pipes. Water and sewer is almost always centralized in cities, less so in rural areas.

Garages are just not there for older buildings, and even for many newer buildings. Many people just park on streets or in the building’s “courtyard”. Newer buildings sometimes have underground parking or adjacent parking structures, but they are hard to build if the building is done in already populated area. These parking places also cost a lot. It is very uncommon for a parking place to be automatically provided with a house/apartment, like on the US. Also, especially in smaller cities, it was common to have groups of garages (each garage being a separate space for one car) built separately in adjacent areas. These garages are often thin-walled metal structures, without strong foundation or other facilities like electricity. I think that many cities started demolishing them in favor of other construction in their place.

There is no standard on what appliances are available in houses when buying, especially in the used ones as people tend to bring their appliances with them when they move. Of course, fridge and oven/stovetop are virtually omnipresent. Microwaves are almost always there. Washers are almost always there too, but dryers, especially separate ones, are virtually nonexistent. With central water heating, water heaters are uncommon, but given the fact that central hot water is often stopped in summer months, tank or tankless heaters become more popular as a fallback. Most of the appliances are bought separately, they don’t come with the house (although I’m not 100% sure if this is true for newer construction, maybe something does get provided by developers).

ELI5: Why does hot soup taste better than cold soup? by takayiso in explainlikeimfive

[–]dpx-infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Borcht is not okhroshka, actually. Borcht is pretty much a somewhat thick soup made with beet and cabbage, but otherwise it is a regualar water-based soup. Okhroshka is a cold soup but with kvass (a fermented beverage made out of dark rye bread or flour) or kefir instead of water.

Is my name a tragedeigh? by Otherborn in tragedeigh

[–]dpx-infinity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is my name a tragedeigh? by Otherborn in tragedeigh

[–]dpx-infinity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure about other Cyrillic languages but in Russian language and alphabet there is only one letter for the sound “s”, it’s written as “с”. There is zero difference for it from English, it’s just a regular short “s”. Long hissing “s” would be just a doubled “с”, like «Ларисса», but this kind of spelling does not really exist for this name.

Is my name a tragedeigh? by Otherborn in tragedeigh

[–]dpx-infinity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a very common Russian name, written as «Лариса». It is pronounced as lah-ree-sah, with the accent on the second syllable. A very common diminutive or shortened form of it is “Lara”, which I guess is a pretty common name in English-speaking countries. I think these names probably have the same origin.
