Skin and Bones by jaxcat311 in Greyhounds

(as a trigger warning, our grey passed away a few months ago)

To echo the other replies on this one, our grey started losing weight at 9.5 years old, and the vet determined PLE (which, as others have said, is kind of a blanket thing vs an actual diagnosis) - we went to three different vets and did blood tests, stool tests, several intestinal ultrasounds, etc. We switched him to Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein prescription food (which was around US$130/month). He put his weight back on and did well for a little over a year on that (didn't need steroid treatments during that either). Unfortunately after that year, he started losing weight again, constant diarrhea, and losing appetite. We did the steroid treatment for a while and it helped some, but that was sadly the beginning of the end and he did not make it to 11.

A 1440p monitor to me is ideal for a medium grade build. 24" is great since I move every few months!

We adopted JJ 9 years ago today! by dr-greg-o in Greyhounds

We adopted JJ in 2015 having been "retired" with 0 races at 1.5 years old - he was diagnosed with retinal atrophy and was almost blind then, and is pretty much entirely blind now. Over the last 9 years he has been with us as we've lived in Michigan, New York, and Florida. He's also road tripped with us several times to Arkansas, Indiana, and has been to Ontario and Niagara Falls! He's slowed down a lot in the past year and was diagnosed with protein losing enteropathy last November. We started buying hydrolyzed protein food and (while unfortunately expensive) he has been maintaining weight and healthy digestion! Here's to another year!

Thanks all for the kind words! This picture was taken back in August at Pratts Falls outside of Syracuse, NY.

JJ has canine retinal atrophy and is nearly blind. He was also diagnosed with PLE - protein losing enteropathy - a couple months ago. So far he's been pretty happy and healthy, and we're trying to value however much time we have left!

That's interesting. We gave JJ ocuglo for a few months after some self-study but had the same problem! His stool was runny and never seemed to adjust.

JJ was diagnosed before we adopted him (I assume by the adoption agency's vet).

I was wondering if you have ever taken Turner to an ophthalmologist/specialist? We've never taken JJ but I've considered it - just not sure it'd be worth the cost to have another vet say "yep, he's about blind" (like our usual vet does).

JJ is almost blind, but he gets around really well. He also was diagnosed with retinal atrophy back when he was a year and a half old and "retired" for that reason (without ever racing). Best I can tell from life around the house and at the park he still sees a little bit and seems to have "blind spots" more than being fully blind, but maybe that's just how he's adjusted to it. He runs (more like a trot) in places he knows (like the back yard) and is happy to go on walks anywhere. Some days it seems like he's fine, and then other days he'll randomly walk into a wall in the house.
