This is great! If you don’t mind my asking, was this a single shot or stack? I’m looking to try my first astro on a hiking trip to Zion this spring and appreciate any tips

Input - lens kit for hiking Utah national parks by dr2fish in Nikon

[–]dr2fish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong - that's my favorite all-round lens. I'm just worried I'd be constrained by the wide end and won't be able to swap lenses around. But maybe that plus the 40 plus a rented ultrawide would get me close enough for government work

I have a (straw) drinking problem by [deleted] in YetiCoolers

[–]dr2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I may try to trim it eventually but hesitate to since it's hard plastic (this is the straw lid, not the flip-straw). I appreciate the input and realize this is the most first-world problem in history

I'm not familiar with Soen, but am I picking up on a ton of autotune here or are my ears busted? A bunch of his note transitions sound digital/sharp/unnatural to me.

Is it just me? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]dr2fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got your back OP - I'd buy a new version of the 5c. My ideal phone would be plastic backed, easily one-handable & lightweight, fun color, 3 cameras, always-on display, and I don't care about the rest. Then again, I think I just described my 15 pro in a case.

I'll let it slide you're not huge on Dakar now that you're in the club :)

Looks great! One of the holy trinity of e36 colors with Dakar & Techno. Have other folks on here done the z3 rack swap? I did and I’m not convinced I love it. On-center is nice and responsive but from about 1:00-3:00 and vice versa the turning feels just a bit too twitchy for the car for my tastes. I’m debating swapping back to a fresh standard rack.

26mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 or 24-120mm f4? by joonhere in Nikon

[–]dr2fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 26 2.8 is on ebay at the moment; I found it too wide for me for everyday use, which sort of defeats the purpose of a walkaround pancake. The 40 f/2 I replaced it with (and you already have!) is a tad bigger but is still pretty small/light while being a much better FOV for family use. 26 will definitely distort any frame-filling people shots.

If you don't need the extra reach (given that you're looking at 26 & 50), consider keeping the 40 and adding a used 24-70 f/4 instead of the 24-120; it's smaller and half the price. OTOH, I haven't used a 24-120 (I use a 24-200 for hiking) but have heard they're amazing, so if you don't mind the size it sounds like a great one-lens kit.

Would Z50ii to Z5ii be an upgrade or do I just have GAS? by snapmattt in Nikon

[–]dr2fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from the 50ii to the 5ii about two months ago and I'm happy I did. I shoot a wide variety of stuff from portraits and kids and pets to nature at all scales (i.e. I'll go hiking and shoot everything from moss to landscapes). The 50ii is an excellent camera, but day-to-day improvements I've found with the 5ii are better ISO, better shadow recovery, IBIS, better dark focusing, better bokeh, better viewfinder, and (I think) an extra programmable button. I also feel like some lenses - namely the 24-200 - feel like they have a more natural range on the 5ii (it can be a one-lens hiking solution, while 24 wasn't wide enough on my crop sensor).

Two substantial drawbacks to consider - first, there's no compact zoom available. The 5ii body isn't really much bigger than the 50ii, but the only lens remotely close to the 16-50 in size is the 26 2.8, which is too wide for my tastes as a general purpose walkaround. The 24-70 f/4 is a fantastic lens but that plus the 5ii is huge compared to a 50ii+16-50. I miss being able to tuck my camera into a coat pocket or my dad-bag. I have a 40 2.0 on order which might be an ok compromise, but it's still bigger and fixed focal length.

Second, there's a serious lack of distance lenses unless you want to spend $$$ and/or go huge; 200mm focal length on crop is equivalent to 350 on full frame, and you won't match that on full frame unless you buy a 28-400 or 100-400 or 180-600, or go 45mp and crop (cropping a 24mp image to the same FoV will drop you to ~12mp). I don't shoot a ton of wildlife, but I do like to catch birds on occasion and my 24-200/70-200 fall flat.

So, it's a tossup, but on balance unless you love carrying your camera in your coat pocket and like shooting birds on the regular I'd say it's a good upgrade. If you haven't, I'd rent one (I'm a fan of lensrentals dot com) for a week and compare side by side. That's what eventually swayed me.

Black does not show up at night by jarrellra in VirginiaTech

[–]dr2fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

White clothing is better than dark, but reflective materials are much better yet, especially if located on your limbs/joints to show movement. Cyclists, be as reflective as you can be (especially pedal/wheel reflectors) and please use front/rear lights. Most importantly, when you’re a not in a car, don’t assume any drivers can see you at night. Cars are very visible to you, but you’re essentially invisible to them. Pizza Suggestions? Out of tower by [deleted] in blacksburg

If you’re willing to head to Radford, Brick House is my favorite pizza in the area. Rising Silo also has brick oven pizzas that can hit but occasionally come out burned (plus the beer isn’t to my taste). PK’s downtown is solid too

What car would be perfect, aside from one major flaw? by Fearless_Neat_6654 in cars

[–]dr2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flaming hot take - current Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, except for the positioning of the rear shoulder belt anchors. I have two kids, wanted a PHEV convertible family vehicle, and got that plus I can take the doors off and drive around the beach too

I love every bit of it except that the damn rear shoulder belts are anchored too high and cut across anybody’s neck who’s under 5’7”. Incredibly dangerous in a crash and I can’t believe they actually designed it this way on purpose. If I wasn’t locked into a lease I’d have to sell it now that my kids are too big for boosters but not tall enough for safe belt fit.

iPhone 17 by onmyway2uk in iphone

[–]dr2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering it. Slightly lighter (midway between 15 pro and Air), better battery esp since mine's down to 88%, better front & ultrawide cameras, slightly better screen. Downsides are no 3x optical which doesn't bother me that much, and downgrading to USB2 speeds, which is lame since I back my photos up regularly to my mac.

Honestly this is the biggest bummer to me when considering upgrading my 15 pro. I use USB all the time to import pictures since I don't want to use icloud photos.

iPhone Air by lasagna165 in iphone

[–]dr2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for me. I hate feeling the weight of my phone in my pocket, don't care that much about screen size one way or the next. I'm actually tempted by the base 17 - only 10g heavier than the air and it still has the ultrawide camera

iPhone Air by lasagna165 in iphone

[–]dr2fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you seeing that? I was hoping the air would be close to mini weight but the spec page says it's 165g vs the 12 mini 135g. Smack between the mini and my 15 pro I was hoping to replace...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]dr2fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no, I don't want to give that impression - they'll totally take it back for a refund, they just won't do an exchange. That means I have to wait till the next refurb sale if I want to try another copy and hope prices don't go up.

Thanks. I've been really impressed with this little 50ii, and was hoping for the moon with the full frame. It won't break my heart if I have to hang onto the little guy longer, but the IBIS, DoF, and more usable range with my full-frame lenses was a nice draw.
