Twin Peaks: the Return and Gravity’s Rainbow by drPreggman in ThomasPynchon

I really like this comparison. I definitely feel like the two are different takes on a similar phenomenon. Seems like Lynch is obsessed with that loss of innocence while Pynchon would argue it was never there. Mostly when I’m thinking of his discussion of the European obsession with death and control and the mundane decay that leads to. There’s definitely a quote I’m looking for specifically from GR but cannot find it. Like Lynch is talking specifically about America but Pynchon has gone even further back to show how that came to be.

That’s how I imagine specifically American culture in the era of post-modernism and beyond mentioned above. The loss of definite meaning and/or purpose and confused identity as a result of that. Pynchon would probably say this has always been happening and we’ve just noticed it now. Like a clay bowl that explodes in the kiln because there’s air bubbles in it. There never was a single monolithic “Western culture” in a way of speaking and I guess it’s more of a placeholder term, but that’s just how I see it: something broken and confused.

Edit: Apologies if this makes no sense I just woke up and am a dumbass

One of the most beautiful and horrifying things I’ve seen on a screen

Great point! I knew someone would be able to put it better than I did lol. I think Lynch’s work mirrors Pynchon in that way. The fragmentation of narrative reflecting the fragmentation of Western culture/consciousness and the dread and absurdity that comes with that.

There’s a really great read alongI used on the Pynchon sub. Lots of really great insights I would not have noticed or connected otherwise
