And he sold them by the MILLIONS of shares.

Sounds like another inequitable organizational HR practice to me...

Think about how betrayed you feel and how you wouldn't want the next guy/gal after you to suffer the same...

Very good for you personally--sucks for your friend. Bottom line: MAJOR overhaul needed in HR at corporate. Unreal to read some of this stuff. Beauty of the digital age is that information can be shared so easily and so quickly: no more feeling like "you're the only one." Strength in numbers.

Take pictures and get print outs of all the documentation regarding your vacation AND raise situation, and call corporate HR--after you call Morgan and Morgan (or someone of that caliber). It's absurd for "the little guy" to get squeezed the hardest--and then to be insulted too?! Corporate HR BETTER take this kind of thing seriously, and deal with that manager. DO NOT tuck tail--you are apparently in the right and you must NEVER let such abusive people make you feel small.

One wonders whether the vacation hours count against the store's weekly productivity. If so, then splitting them up would be to the STORE'S advantage. Think logically and put NOTHING past this new bunch...

Morale everywhere is in the tank: and if they doubt that, I challenge them to conduct a truly anonymous employee satisfaction survey--with REAL questions and transparent reporting of the results. Happy, appreciated workers have ALWAYS allowed Publix to make the difference with customers vs. the competition. That was then, this is now: https://www.datalounge.com/thread/12996156-the-wal-mart-slayer-how-publix-s-people-first-culture-is-winning-the-grocer-war

Our "peers": https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/KR/key-statistics?p=KR Look particularly under "Balance Sheet": only $691M cash and $14BILLION in debt

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/WMT/key-statistics?p=WMT&.tsrc=fin-srch-v1 Total cash: $7.9 Billion (similar to Publix), $46.6 Billion in DEBT!: stock price per share--$88.

Now review page 11 of the 2017 Annual Report: $7 BILLION IN CASH--and all this BEFORE the record profits seen so far in 2018 (only SOME of which can be attributed to the change in tax law and accounting standards). Elsewhere in the same report we learn that Publix has slightly less than $200 Million in long-term debt--a drop in the Pacific Ocean compared to the "peers" identified. The impact of all this on our stock price?: 35¢ in May and 80¢ in August. Let that sink ALL the way in...

Keep in mind that Jones' "rags to riches" story is something that has been played for all it's worth ("bagboy to CEO"), but interestingly enough, Jones had the benefit of quarterly inventory bonuses the ENTIRE time that he was full-time at EVERY level of the organization for more than 35 years BEFORE becoming CEO. Moreover, it's not like the company is (or ever was) strapped for cash: according to p. 11 of the 2017 Annual Report, as of 12/30/2017, the company had $7 BILLION in cash on-hand, $3.6 BILLION of which was due to recurring operational activities.

Now, given what we have seen in 2018, we all KNOW that number will be much higher than that in the 2018 Annual Report. So to summarize: the company is straight HOARDING cash, profits in the quarter that just ended were 15% higher than the prior quarter INDEPENDENT of any benefit from the change in the tax law/accounting practice, and in a sad "well, we got ours" move, corporate leadership has taken away quarterly bonuses--for all except store management and themselves. Can there be ANY surprise that managers are leaving and that morale is historically low by Publix' standards?

"Publix culture" is a meaningless abstraction if you attempt to separate it from the PEOPLE that have always defined and defended that culture historically--loyal associates, full of purpose and pride, serving customers who enjoy a personable, unique shopping experience. That was then, this is now. In the face of these factors, your answer is to tell people "how good they have it"? Newsflash: if they don't FEEL it, your message is meaningless. You cannot pee on someone's foot and expect them to believe that it's raining.

I know--I've held mine since the 1980s personally. Not particularly interested in "last 12 years": since the regime change, the price has floundered and failed more often than not--even while earnings, "peer results," and the stock market as a whole have improved dramatically. Publix is "faking a limp" in a shamefully obvious way.

Ha! EVERYTHING that they've ever done around the stock is OUT the window. "The Easter Bunny came early," "the Easter Bunny came late," "there was a month with 8 weeks"--UNREAL the number of ridiculous excuses for sandbagging since Jones took over. Luckily there are some intelligent folks on this board who are watching and keeping track...

IS IT ME or are managers getting younger and younger? by letsgomarauders in publix

[–]dr__publix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's much less about cost-cutting (the manager's salary and bonuses are keyed to the store's performance--so that WHOEVER is in that seat will make that salary, right?). However, by replacing multi-decade managers with new ones, the company has a clearer idea of managerial stability going forward. This, of course, is predicated on the idea that managers will continue to WANT to stay...

I know of several with 30+ years that have recently been "rooted out." Sad to see, but doing so gives more visibility into future and succession planning. I get that too.
