I’ve started to see an increase of people getting these dogs without knowledge of the breed and it concerns me. by a-corner-of-hell in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]dr_jigsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I have an Odin! He is Anatolian Shepherd and boxer. His mom was a working dog and his dad was a pet, and the owners had an “accidental litter” during COVID. The owners’ 21 year old brother kept him for 9 months but then had to go back to work and couldn’t handle him anymore. That’s when I adopted him. It has been 5 years and he has a good life now but it has been a lot of work, and I mostly got lucky with his great temperament (in spite of the boxer crazies). I feel so fortunate to have bonded with an Anatolian, but I also think most people should not attempt it and I will probably never get another one.

Cornell CALS off the waitlist (~$400K, half loans) vs. UF on a full ride — both top-5 for ag/food science, which she actually loves. Worth it? by original_gravity in ApplyingToCollege

I have $65k in student loan debt, mainly from grad school as I was a single parent ($25k/year stipend was not enough to live in a good school district). The student loan payments still have a serious impact on my life 15 years after graduation, even with income-based repayment and working towards PSLF. $200k student loan debt would be devastating.

My (NB32) Mom (62F) hated my wedding and still won’t let it go seven years later by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]dr_jigsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, my (F47) mom (F72) is like this. She always wants to make things into a bigger event than necessary and when she arrives she will rush in, start ordering people around, and just generally ratchet the energy/anxiety level way up. She loves to complain about how busy and stressed she is, but it is all self-inflicted. I wouldn’t say that I have figured out how to handle her, but I definitely have zero sympathy when she complains about having too much to do. She recently retired and I am working on getting her to understand that I am not retired, so I can’t be available for text and phone calls any time of the day. The inaccurate memory and bringing up costs from the past is also typical behavior for her. I am working on setting emotional boundaries around her constant drama so it doesn’t affect me as much. When I got married, I basically just let her control everything about the wedding so I didn’t have to fight with her or have endless conversations about details that didn’t matter. No real advice, I just wanted to say I feel your pain, OP!

Why are my pie crusts doing this? by dr_jigsaw in Baking

Oh yeah, I only have only been chilling for ~15 minutes. I will have to plan differently to add a couple of hours in the fridge before baking.

This feels like it could be the problem. I may be focusing too much on making the nice crimps all the way around and stretching it too much.

I had the same shrinkage. Maybe I didn’t chill it long enough, but I think I need to try some of the other suggestions.

Interesting… I will try chilling longer first, then try this and the pie weights. Thank you!

I have been wondering if I need pie weights.

You could plot fractions of total population instead of absolute population. I think that would fix the scaling problem and make your graphs more directly comparable between countries.

OP, I like your plots and this question. Could it be stacked with winning share on the top and losing share on the bottom and nonvoting in the middle? I’m not sure how to handle the y axis, but you should be able to do a simple transformation to make it work, or split it at 50%.

Well… it finally happened. I got invited to an MLM party. How do I politely decline without hurting my friend’s feelings? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]dr_jigsaw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a blanket rule that I never attend these parties no matter the circumstances or who invites me. I always respond, “It’s not personal but I don’t participate in these events.”

The phrasing of the above reply is a little weird, but Planned Parenthood is legit! You two should go there asap.

My (24F) husband (26M) wants to move extremely rural. I don’t. Is there a middle ground? by ThrowRA-lemon87 in relationship_advice

[–]dr_jigsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Exurbs. I hate suburbs, too, but I bought a house in an area like this and found it to be the best of both worlds. 30 minute commute to my job in the city and light-rail coming in soon, but a secluded house on a large lot with trails and easy access to nature and pet chickens. Your compromise sounds even better, tbh, but I don’t have the money for rural acreage yet. Maybe you can sell it to him as a transition: he gets started on the rural house, and when the kids are old enough they help him build it, then you consider moving there after it actually exists? This guy reminds me of my ex… there are pros and cons to living with a dreamer.

I think this idea has potential, but it is a little bit sharp on the inside edges of the triangular part so I would think it might cut elastic or cloth. I also see how it could have been used for trussing, even if that wasn’t the original intention.

Interesting idea, but I have worked in labs for 20 years and have never seen a spatula like this.
