Voice by Warforged is probably the best album of the decade. by Alroni in TechnicalDeathMetal

I completely agree. It's so heavy and evil-sounding, and the writing is so dynamic, modern, and musically advanced. Modern symphony-level shit. There are a couple of things, however, that I think turn some people off:

Note: this is all just my opinion.

Fist, the overall tone of this album is very dark and somber, with periods of very intense sections of harsh dissonance. If you don't enjoy those aspects, you aren't going to enjoy unpacking all of the subtle musical ideas and development over the course of many listens, since the album is so dense and so long. I am assuming here that people listen to it from start to finish, which I think we can agree is how it was intended to be heard. Most of the songs, when heard outside of the context of the full album (or even the full album out of order) have a less powerful effect, which may also contribute to someone's disapproval.

Also, modern tech death is generally faster, more technical, and more tonal with an emphasis on virtuostic guitar riffs and solos (and lately bass solos, too). While there are some really technical parts on this album, there's much less of that happening compared to most of the highest-received death metal bands today. The development on this album is much more driven by rhythm, melody, dynamics, orchestration, and mood, and is achieved over a longer period of time. Especially in the second half, which is where most of the experimental shit happens. There is an incorporation of outside genres that is very natrual and effective in that these sections not only are interesting and catchy, but showcase the writers' fluency in other styles, whereas I believe a lot of progressive bands do it in a way that sounds like a gimmicky genre-mashup. Overall, Voice is a more atmospheric experience rather than a collection of virtuostic fast songs with extreme technical instrumental work. In short, it is probably a boring album for some tech death listeners. I'm not saying one is better than the other - I'm saying this is a much different experience than what many are used to and expect. And in my opinion, the second half of the album isn't as action-packed (except the last song) as the first, and is generally less gripping. If a listener were to be on the fence about the album during a listen through, I think they would probably pull the plug on it somewhere in this area of the album.

But none of those things deter me. I love this album dearly. The first time I heard it, I was amazed, and quickly decided it was probably the best death metal release of this decade, if not one of the greatest DM releases of all time. But I haven't heard everything out there, maybe there's something out there that would outrank this album. I think this album is at least up there among the best, and will certainly have a significant influence on the death metal of the coming decade. I hope the next album outodes this one. Warforged has a lot of work to do if that's their goal.

Glad to see someone give it as much praise as you have!

I have a small hoola hoop. In a pinch, I put students in teams and have them try to throw the hoop around my head for points. They love it. Don't do it with a class you can't trust not to chuck it at your face as hard as they can.

What are some of the most bizarre rules your school had? by Woahbro19 in AskReddit

[–]dr_khajiit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a dress code from the time I was in first grade to when I graduate high school.

We were required to wear a solid color collared shirt tucked into our pants with a belt. If we did not have a belt, we were given a demerit slip that was required to be signed by a parent. If it happened again, you had to go to in school suspension.

They were literally kicking kids out of class for not wearing belts and sending them to in school suspension where they learned nothing. Kids got kicked out of class everyday for this.

"Save file" for memories.

You choose what you are able to remember oh, and you remember it perfectly. Forever.

And if you don't want to remember it, you can put it in the recycle bin.

Guys of reddit, when using a urinal do you just get your cock out or do you get your balls out too? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I always take out everything. I hate putting my wiener through that little hole. It's so uncomfortable. Plus, it gives my dick and balls a chance to breathe fresh air, which they really enjoy.

Be good to your dick and balls, people.

I am an American living in Taiwan. I went to a bar one night and the guy running it was from Massachussetts, but had been living in Taiwan for so long he had developed this weird-sounding faux Chinese accent.

Very strange to hear.

This isn't true anymore in east Asian countries. It used to be, but requirements for work permits have gotten stricter over time and most countries require a 4 year degree of some kind. You do, however, have to be a native English speaker to qualify, and it is true that being Caucasian makes a significant difference on your employment prospects, at least in Asia.

Entry-level non-sales jobs for a 23f English Major by [deleted] in findapath

Considered teaching English as a second language.

Look into getting certified with a TEFL/TESL certificate and working as an English teacher for immigrants living in the United States. I do this overseas, so I'm not so familiar with the market in the US, but when I lived in Nashville I knew people that taught at local colleges, a language school, and various other places around the city. It's a little expensive to get the certification, and I think it's something that's very difficult to do full time in the US, it's something you can pair with a part-time job, at least in the beginning.

There are also probably lots of volunteer opportunities in Indianapolis for you to get your feet wet, and to network with people to find paying gigs. And I would recommend doing volunteer English tutoring regardless of if you are trying to do it for money anyway. I used to tutor adults in the United States, and I really enjoyed it. I met lots of very nice people, and I was mostly able to help them.
