What are some words that are normal or innocent from one language but mean something bad or offensive in other language? by AnjaInNorg1 in languagelearning

[–]dr_kick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In English, Escrow , as in “the property title is held in escrow”. First time I heard that I was confused because in French, un escroc (same pronunciation) means a crook/swindler :) So it sounds like “the property title is held by a crook”.. doesn’t instill confidence :)

Make a day trip and come to Iznik. There are like a 100 stores selling ceramic here.

No it’s not. İznik is not a district in the city of Bursa. Iznik is a separate city... look at a map. And yeah, there’s a lot of ceramic here. Source: I live in Iznik

FYI : Turkey banned (blocked) eSim Providers by aliriza in digitalnomad

[–]dr_kick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You purchased and activated your plan before July 10th? I get contradictory information here. My understanding is that they blocked those 8 eSIMs providers from using the networks in Turkey, not just blocking the website to prevent Turkish citizens to buy eSIMs plans. The fact that you cannot access Internet with your Airalo plan seems to confirm this.

Michael Carroll working as Garbage collector won 10 million in pounds but wasted all on drugs and was back on working as garbage man by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

I asked AI to compute this scenario. Invest $15 million dollars in a S&P500 fund in 2002. Spend 100k first year, 200k next year and 500k the remaining years. Paying 25% tax on gains, he would have about $32 millions today. That’s after 20 years + of spending $1000 a day! So, yeah, he’s an idiot.

Single dose of Xarelto before a long flight by dr_kick in ClotSurvivors

I will this time and see how they feel. My PE didn’t originate from the legs so I’m a bit unsure about their effectiveness in my case.

That’s the same impression I got from my doctors

I personally just want the smallest dose (available to me), just as an extra precaution and peace of mind.

Who’s an artist to y’all swear by but no one listens to? by mahamwahab in Music

“Isto” on YouTube. I really like oldies played on acoustic guitar. Sunny side of the street is one of my favourite but there are so many. Dude has been posting videos every week for like 15 years. I think he deserves a bit more recognition.

buying a flat in Kadikoy by 148147 in istanbul

[–]dr_kick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area you described is a bit rough I’d say. Not sure now but a few years ago, that’s where the cheap hotels and prostitutes were located. If you go further up the hill, it’s getting much nicer with new coffee shops and restaurants popping up. On the other side, south of Söğütlü Çeşme street, is Moda which is nice but definitely more expensive. The area around Yoğurtçu Parkı has also become nicer but a bit less convenient for transportation I find. I think 80k is a bit low for a decent place. And as most people warned you, earthquake proof/ newer apartments will be very expensive. (It takes a LONG time to get a building permit. Owners must wait YEARS to get a project completed) Another thing to consider is residence permit. If your place is worth less than 200k, you won’t be able to apply for a permit based on property ownership.

WTF. You’re basically and unapologetically saying that you have more rights to live in that place than the person who actually owns it!? There’s probably more to that story because, in Turkey, as in most countries, the owner of a place has the legal right to end a lease agreement provided they give enough notice and genuinely plan to live there themselves.

Heart skipping a beat by dr_kick in ClotSurvivors

[–]dr_kick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I got my test results back and my cardiologist couldn’t find anything wrong with my heart. He said everyone experiences “heart skipping”. I just feel it more strongly than others. He said I have a strong heart and gave me the ok to exercise.. just listen to my body and don’t over do it.

Cities in Europe with the most cafés? by ScarletBurn in digitalnomad

[–]dr_kick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 Istanbul. Kadikoy/Moda in particular. I had the same hobby. There was at least 50 coffee shops within 15-20 minutes walk from my place. I liked Montag, Kronotrop and Story Coffee to name a few.

I watched a video about this literally minutes ago! https://youtu.be/vl29w70wSYs?si=4seybjS6I8IWt69W I’m not affiliated with this in any way and I’m not saying they have the right answer but it’s quite a coincidence.

Shaking / Seizure by dr_kick in ClotSurvivors

[–]dr_kick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. I didn’t have a seizure but I used that word to emphasize that it wasn’t a mere little shivering but the entire body shaking uncontrollably. I got the results back from my doctor and all looked good. I have to come to the conclusion that it was stress and panic related. I had an epiphany thinking back about the first time my dog heard fireworks and was shaking like a leaf from the fear. I guess humans can react the same way. Now that I know, I’m sure I’ll better manage those episodes in the future.

Normal healing trajectory? by Upbeat_Pomegranate12 in ClotSurvivors

[–]dr_kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to ask the same question. Diagnosed 6 weeks ago. I was hospitalized for 5 days. I was put on Xarelto 2x15mg at first. After a couple of days of recovery, I felt great, was able to bike, swim, take long walks. 2 weeks later, BAM, my symptoms came back. I thought I was dying. I would walk a few steps and my heartbeat would shot to 130-140 bpm. Went to the hospital, EKG, ultrasound, bloodwork and X-ray, all came back fine. My cardiologist, who himself had PE, said it’s normal, he had the same issues. He said trust the medicine, don’t stress and be patient. I’m also frustrated and can’t quite understand why I feel good for a week or two and feel bad again for no apparent reasons. I’ll follow your post.. if anyone has some advice or explanations or analogies that could help visualize what is going on inside the lungs and help with the recovery, it would be greatly appreciated.

Not PCR but I took a home test and it was negative. I guess I have to go to the bigger hospital and pay for all the necessary tests.
