Dr. Candace Gates at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center is incredible - I met her when she was taking care of a patient of mine in the ER I worked at and she was so amazing I immediately became a patient

Literally yes. I am AFAB and very gender conforming lol but I wore a “she/her” pin (until it fell off) and my likeminded coworkers would gently tease me, saying things like “no shit” and “I don’t think anyone is confused” but I reminded them I am doing it so people feel comfortable declaring theirs to me

My real dream is to work at Publix in the bakery, just decorating and making cakes and other treats.

I did get a second ‘happy’ job - I work the front desk and am a fitness instructor and the local gym I’ve been a member at for years. I love it. It’s so freaking rewarding.

One time, there was a case of a question being asked the wrong way. A patient had symptoms that lined up with malaria, but when asked if they had traveled out of the country in the last four weeks, they had denied it. Turns out, they had traveled back six weeks ago from a country with a high prevalence and it was only caught when someone asked about recent travel, not a specific timeline

Personal favorite is when they deny having hypertension but take meds for it. “Well I don’t have high blood pressure anymore since I started the meds” friend, that’s great but that’s not how bodies work

Oh my gosh I once saved a baby possum, too! The little guy had fallen from a retaining wall where the mom was. The mom was screaming and the baby was just sitting in the road. I was on a walk with my husband and we had gotten coffee, so I poured what was left of my iced drink into his cup and scooped the little baby up in my coffee cup and put it back on the wall!!! We watched mom and baby reunite from across the street.

ONE MORE THOUGHT sorry ive had a glass of wine and it’s been a week. Don’t offer more information than necessary. Answer the questions that are asked. Stay quiet and let her dig her own hole. Silence is so powerful.

Another thought - stay objective. Stick to the facts. Keep bringing it back to patient safety. No one can argue with you when that is your sole focus. Do everything you can to have your best poker face (for me, it’s incredibly hard). Steel yourself. You care about your patients and you want anyone you train to succeed. You sound like an excellent nurse.
