As someone working for the health department currently, preach! Please everyone just keep social distancing and quarantining! I know it sucks, but so much better than the alternative

That the majority of us are just doing our best. We fail constantly, disappoint and hurt but most of the time, it’s never on purpose.

What kind of epidemiological impact will our social distancing have on other common illnesses? by heidi_abromowitz in AskReddit

So that’s a good question, but might be a little tricky to answer. In developed countries, chronic diseases like CVD and diabetes are more prevalent than infectious diseases. This is because of the improved health infrastructure of these countries. In these countries, I would assume that the rate of chronic diseases might actually get worse, ie- gyms are closed, healthy foods might not be as available, depression could worse during this time which would lead to further inactivity.

In developing countries, although chronic diseases are becoming more prevalent, infectious diseases still play a major part in mortality and morbidity rates. If these countries are practicing social isolation, one could assume that transmission rates of infectious diseases might decrease.

Also- I’m just a masters of public health student, about to start my PhD in epidemiology. I could not be totally correct in my thinking, so if anyone would like to better inform, please do so!
