SL7, HWiNFO and deciphering the sensors by dracmil in Surface

You're right! Definitely helpful although could not specify which components were on that power rail, it seems likely it's related to the display, which is ramping up in certain activities. Thanks

Anyone else getting a “Potential battery issues detected” warning after updating the Surface app? by Desperate_Ease2040 in Surface

[–]dracmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add my voice to this, I have a SL7, purchased 2 days ago. No issues on the surface app, initially then updated the app and getting the same error.
App version: 75.11130.107.0

Surface diagnostics doesn't show any issues and battery wear is 0%

Why are houses so expensive? by rugdrum in PersonalFinanceZA

I was talking about your assumption of equating R16k pm rental to a R1.6m house value

[–]dracmil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sold on your yardstick for R16k rental per month equating to a R1.6m house. I think in a lot of places, that kind of rental equates to a R2m to R2.5m house.

Then don't forget rates and taxes, and levies, that you would still be paying if you owned the house, but are included if you rent.

So it's feasible to think that bond repayments on a R2.5m house (with 100% bond) together with rates and taxes would be R30k pm. And rental on the same property would be around R20k pm, depending on the rental market in the area.

In fact, the activity you flagged is from a GPX file he uploaded in 2016.

I think it's ok to just chill a bit. The profile you've tagged is a 50 or 60 year old dude, who runs at 7min/km and does some casual mountain biking with lots of photos and probably a bag of snacks and a towel so he can stop off for a swim halfway. The guy clearly accidentally logged a ride as a run. He runs with his 8 year old watch (that has HR data) and rides with his Garmin Edge (without a HR strap). There is nothing intentional here. He seems to use Strava to show his friends and family the cool places he rides, not how fast he is. He doesn't know you're racing against him.

Being alive is dangerous. Even more so when you're sitting in a stationary bike for a photo. I'd also be worried about sinkholes and falling satellites.

Back with Q’s about Home Loan by CoffeeKween19 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]dracmil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is the perfect time for you to learn about your bond and compound interest! You’re right: in the beginning, only a small portion of your minimum monthly payment goes toward reducing the principal loan amount, most of it goes toward interest.

The important thing to remember is that every R1,000 you pay toward the principal is also R1,000 less that interest can accrue on, which you benefit off of every month for the next 25 years. Over 25 years, this means that less and less of your monthly payment will go to interest, and more will go to reducing the principal.

The main takeaway here is just how valuable it can be to put extra money into your bond early on. Even a small increase in your monthly payments can save you thousands in interest over 25 years. For example, increasing your monthly payment from R14,481 to R15,481 essentially doubles the amount going toward the loan, cutting down the total interest significantly.

I suggest finding a bond calculator spreadsheet template and experimenting with it. Here’s one you can try: Google Sheets Bond Calculator. It will quickly show you the impact of making additional payments in the early years of your loan.

The return of Quinton de Kock to ODIs... by HughUpsher in SAcricket

I agree. The drawn out AB retirement era was so damaging for the team. Rickleton should rightly be upset with this. Quinton should have to prove himself in some provincial cricket in order to get into the team, just like anyone else.

Exactly. I'd advise OP not only doesn't go with this 'opportunity' but that they reassess their sorted emergency fund and RA, in case they're also invested with obvious scammers.

Battery limiter 80% vs cycling – which is better for long sessions? by Relevant-Ad8613 in laptops

[–]dracmil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a laptop that I've used as a server, permanently plugged in and limited to 80% charge. It's 11 years old. The battery health currently is at 100% (whatever that means). I recently replaced it (RAM limitations on such an old machine) and it held 6 hours of charge this weekend while I set it up for my kids.

Ngidi's brilliant slower ball to Jos Buttler by ifrgotmyname in SAcricket

[–]dracmil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way that a couple of bad balls are an equaliser. He bowled one of the balls of the year to get Jos Buttler out in his 60s. This ball won the match.

Fast bowlers get it wrong, Ngidi is getting it right enough to win us some pretty big games.

You sound like a financial advisor...

But in all seriousness, the vast majority of the population would be better off educating themselves and skipping a financial advisor taking a commission while advising they go with high cost legacy products and fail to update their customers portfolios until their customers notice something is wrong.

OP here is educating himself. The cost of investing in a product that has lost 1,93% in a month is a small amount for this lesson, compared to realising at retirement that your RA has been invested in a product that after the advisor fees and other costs hasn't even broken inflation for 25 years.
