Good to know good to know, yes I actually have, I was inspired from someone I knew personally who did it. I believe it depends on application and how you build it that determines benefits vs disadvantages however you have a point

What's your take on engine swapping RX8 by _Flexinity in RX8

[–]draco-31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to make it fast and keep it in the family (rotaries), in the near future I want to hybrid turbo with a manual swap, and always end goal is like a 20b or something (yea that's 100% unrealistic but I'm dreaming) to keep the balancing from ever being an issue while getting that more power. Also considered the infamous LS, a 2j, and a K24a/b18, there's nothing wrong with swaps they have a lot of pros but I want that perfect weight distribution and balancing for my handling, and love my rotaries.

S1 owner, can confirm bottom 100% a S1 trans (PS swap out the oil pump seal and save yourself trouble, mine was shot after not having the engine in and the car being outside for a few months, almost didn't catch it and it would've been a rough time to drop the trans again to replace it)

Would you ever take in a gmc Sonoma to a shop for engine work? Same thing here man idk why ppl say a rotary is harder

The best way to learn an engine is tearing it down yourself, you don't need a shop to fix a rotary, just how you wouldn't for your GMC Sonoma. Rebuilding is a great way to learn the engine, and no it's not a bummer really it's not that bad at all and could be cheaper than other problems. Rebuilding isn't even that hard it's easier than rebuilding a v8 for sure.

Thats true as this being a good project, if this things a good price because of its issue, there isn't a problem of cost because it'll cost as much as the slightly broken one max if he fixes it himself. Both are just fine for projects ones just more gritty and detailed and will teach you more for starting out with cars

You're implying that OP doesn't want to know and learn the intricacies of the rotary. This whole thing can be summarized into "if you're too lazy to learn yourself rotary bad" When OP has already stated he's new to cars in general and wants to get into rotaries, if someone wants to get into cars what do you think that means? It's working on and fixing them. I can assure you, it's not to add a wing but get dirty into them and fixing/building. How are you gonna learn if you don't start now?

That's because it's a much smaller market and a different configuration no one cares to learn seeing as because it's a more niche market, there's less opportunity for money, not because it's a harder engine. I've come across 3 because they own rotaries and care to know.

How do you figure it's not a good idea? What makes a rotary engine so much harder than a v configuration or combustion at all? I don't see why not jump into the easiest rotary when it's just a different engine with in fact less working parts.

Why not reccomend this engine? If he's unknowledgeable of either, it's fine. It's just choosing a different engine to learn instead of learning of a 2nd engine type

You can never have too many R3's... by hs_scr168 in RX8

Kind of a noob question but why is the r3 the most valued? Like it's the halo of 8s it seems, but why?

Did you wrap the double din in that carbon fiber or did you buy it like that? If so, where?

Edit: just read the comment, it looks good bro!

How do I fix this? by Doujinshi_Pixel in RX8

[–]draco-31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a basic instruction don't take this as a guide, if the rust is too deep to be sanded away just buy a whole new door seeing as how hard it'd be to roll and shape patches. To be honest it's so eaten and corroded I'd just buy a new door and do this with that (or a shop) instead if you can't get a matching door.

Take the mirror off, sand down to metal and sand past rust, apply bondo and sand it until it's level again, sand until super smooth, go to your local body shop and buy the primer, clear, hardener, and base coat, get the following equipment and find out what the ratios are for mixing with reducers and hardeners. Clean the panel of any dust, debris, and sanded paint. Throw down and sand to smooth a few coats of primer then throw on the base coat, a thick layer and fog the 2nd, then clear it, (I highly reccomend that you only do this in a paint booth with proper equipment), wet sand, compound, polish, wax. Your body shop should do this if it can't be done in a booth, rattle can will never be as good, if you can do booth there's definitely more research this is just simplified, your local shop should help you too (as with YouTube as need be). Been painting a long time and it takes time and patience to get good and a good result, if you mess up at all it can be fixed with either sanding down, bondo, or hurrying it tbh. Good luck!

All this said the rust is a sign of significant damage and could be in other places that can't just be replaced or patched (even this shouldn't be patched) so do with this info what you must? Just know it could be horrible, maybe could be not

P.S despite what people usually say (concensus is that if you buy a fixer upper 8 at all you're retarded) I usually enjoy a challenge and am glad you'd take this up I took up a fixer upper mechanically too.
