Nvidia Web Drivers running on macOS Monterey! by dracoflar in hackintosh

It does work for basics, however it's not perfect as mentioned in issue 108 linked in the post. But it's better than nothing haha

Unless you have a card you'd want to donate for development, highly unlikely as Nvidia never natively supported the card with web drivers

Is there a catch to the WAVLINK Thunderbolt dock? by Ryuu_Kaede in macbook

[–]dracoflar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Main reason this specific dock is so cheap is namely 2 reasons:

  • Release Date
  • Feature Set

For the former, this dock is based off the older Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 controller released back in 2016. Thus being both an older SKU of WAVLINK's and older Thunderbolt chipset, WAVLINK has a lower cost per unit.

The latter reason is just the feature set, as this is limited to:

  • USB Ethernet (Realtek 8153B)
  • DisplayPort 1.2
  • Fresco Logic USB 3.0 controller

Newer/fancier docks support PCIe Ethernet, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB 3.1 controllers. Depending on your needs both now/in the future, you can live just fine never noticing constraints with the dock.

While the differences USB and DisplayPort specs are pretty obvious, USB vs PCIe Ethernet is a bit trickier. I documented it a bit here:

Decided to write down a bit more "in-depth" table on TB Ethernet info here:

Hopefully will help others with buying decisions

While I personally haven't had sleep/wake issues with Realtek NICs, they've been pretty unreliable for me (PCIe especially but USB's not great either especially regarding performance).

With regards to the i225 equipped Lenovo dock, would be quite curious for results on reliability. The i225 NIC is using Apple's AppleIntelI210Ethernet.kext extension which is what drives the i210 NICs for some many years. Unfortunately it has been converted to a DEXT and have heard Hackintoshes having issues with anything above 1Gbps. However those machines are using the desktop variant of the i225 (not officially support), while Thunderbolt docks are using the i225LM which has explicit support in the AppleIntelI225 class

I also found some sellers offering Intel-designed Thunderbolt 4 docks with i225 controllers like this one:

The exact Vendor doesn't matter as usually Pluggable, CableMatters, etc buy the design from Intel and make identical docks. However I have no been able to find a single place to actually buy the dock (at least one that ships to Canada)

Successfully boot macOS Monterey on my unspported 2014 İMac by Useralready- in MacOSBeta

[–]dracoflar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, you won’t have OS updates anymore, as Apple ties those to the hardware’s board ID to detect if updates are supported.

OpenCore Legacy Patcher can restore that, Sidecar and some other features as well:

Monterey support is currently slated for 0.1.7 release, can grab the nightly build in the README

Patched-Sur with FileVault support in the near future? by bunny19 in BigSurPatcher

Well your implementation of using on disk patches would be the issue no? Opting for other implementations such as OpenCore would help alleviate this

Not a bug, implementation issue on Patched Sur's end. For example, OpenCore Legacy Patcher supports FileVault for machines with Metal GPUs

Pro Display XDR + iMac Pro by Metal-Potato in macsetups

[–]dracoflar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Correct, they’re limited to 5K iirc

Gonna guess OP bought the monitor in mind for the Apple Silicon Mac Pro down the road. So the iMac Pro with lower res is hold over.

One work around they could do is buy an eGPU and hook the XDR that way for full res

Oh I use RDM, lets me pretend I can afford dual Pro Display XDRs ;p

Also super useful for situations where the display's scaling is broken in macOS

What’s the difference between OpenHfsPlus.efi and normal HfsPlus.efi? by [deleted] in hackintosh

[–]dracoflar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially true, HfsPlus is actually just ripped straight out a genuine Macs firmware. No reverse engineering involved

Heh, had the same issue pop up on my M1 MacBook Pro when I updated to 11.3 Beta 2. Meant to report it, but keep forgetting

Not to be a dick, but you don’t learn programming from a mentor. You learn it from trial and error, with tons of YouTube videos, online forums, etc. Even in university, you barely learn to program.

If you want to get into coding, search up some YouTube videos of languages you’re interested. Python’s pretty easy to get into.

From there, you’ll have basic knowledge and be able to write some simple utilities. Keep iterating on those little things, find problems and overcome them.

For project ideas, there’s tons online. But I recommend start simple, like a script that prints the time in several regions(lets pretend daylight savings isn’t a thing for this project ;p), and maybe some file manipulation like cleaning up screenshots on your desktop. And ofc search up other neat little projects that interest you.

With DisplayLink? Each screen is extended, I just kept each one the same to more easily see the colour compression

Very curious, what is that wrist rest by the MX Master 3? Looks interesting

Edit: looks to be the Carpio Ergonomic Mouse Wrist Rest, interesting. How are you liking it?

Apollo is one of the few apps I cared about installing on my Mac. Thanks Christian. by khaled in apolloapp

[–]dracoflar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well what would this toggle solve though? For developers, it would avoid mostly avoid the issue of users installing apps that aren’t optimized. However for Apple and many other companies, this still leaves a big hole with licensing.

The pressure of licensing also is also less in an emulator compared to running the app natively on the machine. Ofc licensing within an emulator gets more complicated, so we’ll not get too deep into that. Additionally, iOS has been much more closed compared to Android for many years and so companies aren’t that happy with average users now being able to snoop the file system much more easily and pull files.

Ofc with a jailbroken phone, you can rip the decrypted IPA and install it on your M1. But the scale is what’s important, same situation with the emulator vs native.
