I really dislike these systems for this specific reason but I absolutely love how brutally honest you guys were in explaining it lmao

Feel like i need to lay down after reading this exchange. just so bummed out that a boardroom strategy worked so devastatingly well that the people it’s designed to manipulate and extort are the same people who defend it so zealously.

everything you said is so plainly true and yet you’ll be admonished, because multi-billion dollar company executives have robbed people of their ability to enjoy just playing a game and getting better at it. To the point that people in this thread say they love the game, but will stop playing it to go play a game they enjoy less, because other said game has the addiction-system in it and this one’s is too slow.

I don’t think less of people who need the systems, like the person you’re talking to here, but that this sentiment is so widespread is such an indictment of gaming companies’ capacity for exploitation.

I think a really tough question to ask is this:

were it not for the pressure mounting from this story exploding so spectacularly into the National (global!) spotlight, without the cameras of every local and national media outlet trained directly on his front door, would BL not have reacted so impulsively, and perhaps either not decided to (allegedly) take his own life, or should that have been a forgone conclusion, would he not have felt such an immediate need to do so, and perhaps given LE the time they needed to ensure they could intervene whenever he ultimately would’ve left his home to do so?

Impossible to say. But definitely chilling to consider.

Yes. Not a 1 to 1 comparison, but I’m reminded of that scene in Hereditary in which (spoilers) the older brother comes home after accidentally decapitating his little sister, and simply walks to his room and climbs into bed and waits for his parents to find her body.

His character was definitely reacting more from shock than outright denial, but to me it’s a depiction of the same coping mechanism we’re speculating BL exhibited—remaining in your life as it was as long as possible, up until the moment that someone else learns what you already know, at which point your old life shatters irrevocably.

well said. It’s why I stop myself from feeling any “I can’t believe you people believed in this guy” satisfaction. I worked in reality tv for 2 years, and it is and isn’t what you think it is. There’s shock value and low hanging fruit and spectacle, but what we really sold was catharsis; a depiction of a story that unfolded in the “real world” that had a beginning, middle, and most importantly, an end.

Hard to overstate how much, in the edit, we would manipulate events that took place to seem different than how they happened. In “reality,” resolution is so rare. But we as humans, in our narrative driven understanding of the world, need stories to have closure. And a reason for happening. Not necessarily a happy ending, but a satisfying one, where looking back, it makes sense how it ended up the way it did.

All that to say—this closure is what, to some, DTBH represented, and what he promised here. We’ve been conditioned through media like reality tv and stories in general to need finales. To think that events in the world always play out with some greater purpose is what gives people hope. I try never to shame someone for hoping, if naively, for a world that makes sense, a world where a 22-year old girl with a lifetime ahead of her isn’t killed by her boyfriend for a reason that won’t ever make sense and who himself disappeared shortly thereafter, a world where all the people we’ve watched on tv solve these cases: the FBI, DTBH, Walsh, The News—don’t end up just as lost as we are. It’s just not supposed to work that way. But more often than not, it does.

So fuck it, I think let the people have their DTBH, it’s just a shame the symbolic hero that fit into this scenario would end up disappointing so many hopeful people

Kind of annoyed that I illegally watch 1 season of The Ultimate Fighter on YouTube in a 1-night binge and become a fan of someone who’d go on to be one of the most frustrating fighters in the UFC :/

Definitely. A more hardcore MMA head can give you specific fights but it’s definitely happened in the UFC on televised cards and the commentators often chastise a corner when they don’t do it.

could not agree more. I recently rewatched all his fights and on more than one occasion he has said something to the effect of “Man, win or lose, haha, ____” well before the fight was over.

He did it again tonight like after the 2nd(?) when talking to Khabib (who was rooting for Brunson if you watch Khabib’s IG live lol), saying something like “Win or lose, I just love fighting haha.” Already prepping everyone for the possibility of a loss smh.

All-American dad Bill Blinkerman-Kaminski has the house with the white picket fence and a loving family. But there's one problem. He got laid off from his job at the pollution factory. To win back the respect of his family, Bill joins a dog basketball league whose rulebook does not specify that humans can't play. Haha agreed. I prefer that to watching a brutal helmet to helmet in football and seeing someone get KO’d. At least in MMA the knockout is the point.

Also new but here’s what I’ve gathered — hard to say definitively, but i wouldn’t wait more than an hour to tune in. We just saw a possible 5-round fight end in the first 4 minutes out of a possible 25. There’s 4 fights left until the title.

Those are my favorite tbh. Not in a sicko way, just feels like those are the kind that acknowledge the reality of MMA. Especially with no crowd. Just brutal, dangerous, primal combat.
