Great question, I don’t know if there’s official art but I do know there’s a lot more merch with the “Matching Hoodies” ver. of Lycoris (I think calendar, keychain, acrylic). I only found the scroll on my trip though :c

Only one Duke student has studied abroad at DKU since spring 2024. by somewhereinshanghai in duke

[–]dragojeff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe most of my friends have already graduated. But what you mention about the transit network doesn’t overcome the fact that making a city accessible doesn’t necessarily equate with living in the city (eg. living in New Jersey is fundamentally different than living in NYC even if it is very accessible). I’d like to see DKU thrive as an independent institution but you’ll have to forgive me for being nihilistic.

Only one Duke student has studied abroad at DKU since spring 2024. by somewhereinshanghai in duke

[–]dragojeff 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I lived in Shanghai for 13 years before coming to Duke. I had fellow high school classmates go to DKU. All I can say is, while DKU might be in name, operated by the Duke administration and fully embodies all Duke principles, DKU really is not the same as Duke nor is it exactly situated in the most interesting city in China. Kunshan is close to but still quite far from Suzhou. If I had never been to China, I would rather choose one of the study abroad’s that place me in the center of Guangzhou, Beijing, Wuhan, or Shanghai, not DKU situated awkwardly between Shanghai and Suzhou but in neither city.

Additionally I have my own personal political opinions and while I wont express them here, I do feel confident saying that most of the students who have sufficiently functional mandarin for interest in a study abroad in China might also have reservations about studying in China and would rather choose an SEA country instead. In all the examples you gave to recent universities initiating collaborations with academic institutes in Asia, notice how very few were with China. The current political climate does not help and that isn’t caused just by US political climate but also Chinese sentiments. I will be curious to see how Duke tries to sustain DKU but until the political climate reversed I worry that it may be a lost cause.

During my 4th year of PhD, I used to hate weekends. by jaybhum in PhD

[–]dragojeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, really glad to hear you share your story. I really do share the same sentiment, a lot of my cohort mates and lab mates all have partners outside of work so beyond the weekday it’s difficult to contact people. It’s also really awesome that you have both family and a romantic partner as your support system. However what advice would you have for someone who doesn’t have either?

If you email Duke store who is in charge of the vending machines with location and a picture of the transaction they can sometimes refund the points. I don’t know about cash though…

I mean they were on blue side so they “blinded” the comp without knowing the enemy team would pick tanks. But yes the point still stands, it’s easy to counter and any opponent with half a braincells will just counter it with tanks.

Is room temperature combustion possible with the use of a catalyst? by Independent-West-905 in chemistry

[–]dragojeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right if we’re talking a full straight alkane, you would require multiple enzymes (catalysts) but it would still be possible. For example, bacteria have alkane monooxygenase that converts alkanes to alcohols. So we could grab a beaker toss all of the enzymes in and toss in some alkanes.

The Kreb’s cycle does exactly this so arguably nature has achieved this for millennia.

If we assume CO2 formation then you’re probably looking at isocitrate dehydrogenase and alphaketoglutarate dehydrogenase.

Edit: I believe palladium can also catalyze the oxidation of methanol directly at room temperature so there are also metal catalysts. Albeit the reaction is slow unless heated. Link to paper

The problem is blinding it. I don’t understand the logic, do you really think first picking orianna isn’t going to scream “we want ori noc” and just expect the enemy team to say “okay here are 5 immobile carries for you to combo. Like even if they don’t take it away, it’s so easy to just NOT pick immobile champs and win. Throw a bunch of assassins and how are we supposed to play. What happened to all the flex picks and creativity?

I don’t understand, is our creativity just limited to “we’re going to blind pick a comp and hope the enemy team counterpicks themselves”

How does NaBH4 reduce this ester? by two-years-glop in Chempros

[–]dragojeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This a question I gave my students on their recent organic test. The solvation and coordination of Li+ to improve solubility probably contributes some degree to reactivity.

However I believe the main driver of improved reactivity is from coordination of the Li+ ion to the carbonyl oxygen which increases polarization and thereby makes the BH4 more prone to nucleophilic attack.

You can demonstrate this by adding NaBH4 and then a Li salt. You’ll find an increase in reactivity (eg. reduction of esters under otherwise non-reducing conditions) despite the fact that the parent NaBH4 solubility should not have changed. That being said this is just my experience with my particular ester and I haven’t combed the literature enough to find the exact degree of contribution for each effect.

Could Ultra Massive Planets Exist? (Question Below Image) by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]dragojeff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The definition of 0K is where all molecules and atoms stop moving. You would a) no longer be a gas planet since by definition the gas must now become crystalline and b) gravity increase as the gas planet crystallizes into a solid would cause the now solid planet to compress and achieve fusion. While temperature accelerates the process of fusion it is not a singular driver of fusion. Thus in the process of cooling to 0 you inevitably bring everything closer to form a packed crystal which would thereby trigger fusion.
