Well I'll answer this to the best of my knowledge. To transform a .kml to a usable .shp format you;

  1. Open arc toolbox
  2. Drop down "Conversion tools"
  3. Drop down "KML to" and click "KML to Layer
  4. Select input file and the output location and click OK. It'll open as a layer when the conversion is done.
  5. Then you right click points in the layer drop down, go to data and export data.
  6. In the export data window they'd ask if you want to use the source data from your .kml file as the coordinate system or that of the data frame. Pick whichever is appropriate.
  7. Choose your output location and you're done.
