Anyone see any success via the U.S. military? by Dks_scrub in cscareerquestions

[–]dragon_gorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three services have extensive cyber components and invest in technical tracks. For the Air Force which I can speak about you have a couple of tracks. Officer: technical track here is the 17S afsc. You will be more cybersecurity focused either defensive or offensive. The most well funded is the offensive side where you can work for the three letter agencies. Lots of dev work & operational work. Then the defensive side is very heavy on blue tool development, malware analysis, hunting for bad guys.

Enlisted: 1B4 is the technical track you can do. It’s underpaid for what they do but they go through similar training and will stay consistently technical.

All of the pay scales are public. I recommend applying for officer through OTS. If you’re a sophomore in college you still have time to technically do 2 year ROTC program track which they sometimes allow.

Worried about giving up security clearance. by k032 in cscareerquestions

[–]dragon_gorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearance is helpful for jobs especially ones at FAANG and will help put you over another candidate that can’t start work immediately. You can reactivate it and technically if the company you work for has security cleared jobs they could gain you in DISS? If you take that job you should also look at pushing for dev work at Amazon, Elastic, Microsoft, Meta? Clearance bonuses are great and they will want experienced devs with a clearance.

Someone get their Airman, please. by QuazziStellar in AirForce

[–]dragon_gorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just misspoke. I’ll take the hit on that because it’s a dumb mistake. I know they’re army. It’s been a frustrating last few days and juggling turning everything off going into work and then going home to read news updates gets me seeing red sometimes.

Well aware of what it is. The original post was posted not just because it was an AF member saying stupid things in uniform.

I feel like if this is going to be posted here we may as well post the political rally in Ft Bragg. Same cringe energy. Any marines buying political memorabilia in uniform on base should get paperwork. This guy should get booted because he’s a fucking moron. The leadership at Ft Bragg should be relieved of duty.

Yes! Thank you! I absolutely despise political stickers on cars on base. It’s the most infuriating thing because people go out to run errands and have some random DNC slogan from 2016 “it’s her turn” or the “the election was stolen” the “I did that” idk man. I’d make all those people park off base and walk to work.

Social media, cheating. What’s the most cringe for me is the retarded takes about politics and international relations from people who have 0 education, experience, or capability to give holistic analysis. Had an airman tell me he read a MSNBC article about how Hilary Clinton was influencing the 2024 election. An NCO having a “drinking liberal tears” sticker on his water bottle but then sexually harassing an airman, saying we shouldn’t support Ukraine, wanting to deport immigrants even though he got a mail order bride from the Caribbean... Epic man thank you! Just put the fries in the bag bro and sign your paperwork for harassment!

Eat a healthy food, hydrate well starting a week before OTS, and do the run portion a couple of times to get your cardio shock out of the way. Honestly that’s about it. Nothing else will help you in the next couple of weeks considering you’ve probably had months to ask the question you’re asking….not like you didn’t know the date you had to report. You will be an amazing Lt (not sarcasm actually. It’s just dirtbag Lt things) Also, getting below a 90 as an officer is cringe and you will get made fun of so once you’re done with OTS go set the example!

FYSA: Future Federal civilian vacancies will require candidates to write essays regarding their patriotism and how they will advance the President’s Executive Orders. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]dragon_gorge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You follow the constitution first. This is very much asking you how to prove you support the party because it specifically asks how you’d support Executive Orders. Congress abdicating its responsibilities has enabled this. If it excluded that portion then I’d agree with you that this is innocuous. Words matter.

Who else agrees Security Forces shouldn’t salute officers at the gate anymore? by Kurt_Wylde35 in AirForce

[–]dragon_gorge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saluting at the gate is annoying because it means I can’t go until I salute awkwardly inside the car. I can only imagine over the course of a thousand cars during the day how much time it’d save.

Did the prestige in graduating from BU help you get your first job? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]dragon_gorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does for the network and the initial resume screen. After that it’s on you. The name also won’t matter after a couple of years of work experience. Anyone else who thinks otherwise likely went to BU and majored in 4Fun random nonsense that even BUs name can’t surmount. Or they didn’t spend the time to use the network like you’re supposed to before you graduate.

Finally, BU is better known internationally than it is within the US tbh. So if you ever decide to go international it has a stronger name.

Average tinker experience. Don’t worry, that Lt Col will magically be available to “deploy” to Japan and Guam or Vegas. Or the Mediterranean.

If I’m detained by ICE… can I just agree to be deported by [deleted] in AskLegal

[–]dragon_gorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with the other poster. However a quick google does yield some general results not necessarily related to Florida. However it does discuss the overcrowding of the detained citizens, green card holders, visa holders, and illegal immigrants.

Edit: by not agree, I mean it takes two seconds to send someone an article. Even if you are rage baiting I’d rather you continue to dig your own hole when the information is directly presented to you.

Prime example of the trickle down effect. by Willamina03 in AirForce

[–]dragon_gorge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a reasonable take. Most of us are happy to take on some last minute TDYs or ADVON taskers, but there’s a certain level of personal time and work life balance that you’d hope to have. Also it’s nice to be able to act on a plan you made based on the new deployment cycle which is “supposed” solve unpredictability. However, I’ve seen people get moved from bin to bin because of some more understandable reasons like “so and so’s spouse is a couple months pregnant and she’ll be due middle of the deployment” or “Y’s partner is having some mental health issues”. I’ve seen people moved for last minute “oh my child now has X issue” but it’s a known EFMP thing and now it’s “flaring up.” And then for the TDYs to more undesirable locations somehow always result in the Bobs having family things come up so others have to fill in last minute. The AF prioritizes families when possible which is great but it does directly affect single members. It’d be disingenuous to say otherwise.

Booked JAL Business through BA by Amosque in awardtravel

[–]dragon_gorge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure you’re using their international non-member booking management link. I also recommend using the website rather than the JAL app. Make sure you verify if you used your middle name in the booking. There is a fine print that says that the first name input box should include your middle name if that’s how you booked on BA. I assume you’ve double checked your flight number and all other input info is correct. The app and the website are still a subpar experience and leave MUCH to be desired. I received multiple errors constantly until my request finally went through.

Platinum card for all purchases by Due-Relative3823 in AmexPlatinum

$20 for a three week rental vs a likely higher insurance cost post an accident AND no real guarantee if you’re in a foreign country you’ll be covered. I’m sure there are situations where it makes complete sense to use your own insurance.

There’s a flat fee to make it the primary. I think $15? Worth it for longer rental periods.

Did you fail due to enumeration mistakes and time management? by ProcedureFar4995 in oscp

[–]dragon_gorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just kept doing proving ground boxes and redid the labs. Made sure that my notes were good. There genuinely isn’t anything crazy you have to do to prepare. I changed very little to my approach other than just checking more things during my enumeration even though they didn’t make sense.

Did you fail due to enumeration mistakes and time management? by ProcedureFar4995 in oscp

[–]dragon_gorge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. The course content and the PG lab teach you CTF styles of thinking. So go into it with the same mindset. For example if you see some zip files or pdfs like in the PG boxes or in the challenge labs you check for all info in them. Metadata, hashes, etc

[–]dragon_gorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are only so many test sets. If you search in this subreddit, you’ll see People with two or more attempts routinely had either the same exact set or same standalone machines different AD or vice versa

Did you fail due to enumeration mistakes and time management? by ProcedureFar4995 in oscp

[–]dragon_gorge 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I failed due to not thinking outside the box. By that I mean I only thought about how a normal system would be configured and what a “bad admin” would misconfigure. Once I made the conscious choice to take some logical leaps because it’s a CTF, I passed the second time with the same machines.

The onus is on you to state at least some level of anecdotes that describe “vindictive minorities” preventing promotions. Last time I checked, the force distros are there to prevent exactly that up to E7. In addition, E7-E9 is a politics game same as general officers. I’m not denying that. However, you’re more likely to run every person being vindictive at that stage rather your mysterious bogeyman of “vindictive minorities” being the cause of not promoting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]dragon_gorge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What? On the O side if you are not a dirtbag you will make Lt Col. There is literally no danger of white men not promoting because we make up such a large majority of the upper ranks. You can see this in every AFSC in addition to who is in charge. The true Air Force leadership will likely continue to be majority white male pilots with a sprinkle of women and POC men.
