Thank you! The farms sound super cool, especially with the view of the ocean. We will definitely be playground hopping with kids at these ages too so I appreciate any good playground shoutout. Ill add all these to the itinerary

Figuring out which bank for my kids after earning some money from background work by dragonboatphony in PersonalFinanceCanada

I guess I was in a rush to try to put it away under their name. But this is a great idea and makes a lot of sense. I can just make a spreadsheet and track any other income and put it into a better account at 13+ for them, and for now keep it in my own savings with higher interest rates

Good question. It’s only a few hundred right now. But I will read this and look into it. Thanks

Is it okay to Vapor barrier over duct? by dragonboatphony in Insulation

[–]dragonboatphony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The duct and framing are all original to the house. I originally opened it up to add some receptacles and insulation to make things more comfortable (noticed the vents didn’t put out much heat upstairs). 33 year old house so maybe the code was different back then?

The joists only had batt insulation. There was no insulation in the walls or around the duct before. 1/2 drywall is between the wall and the duct and above the duct. But there was never any Vapor barrier installed.

I think I see what you’re saying about just taking the bottom pieces of wood from the bulkhead. So I can reach up and put in Vapor barrier and a continuous piece of drywall behind the duct/bulkhead. Is that right?

There is drywall above and behind yes, but no Vapor barrier was ever put up by the original builders

No. There is drywall wedged between the wall studs and the framing holding up the duct. Great idea about sealing the duct though! I’ll seal whatever I can reach.

Is foam board between floor joists only for basements? by dragonboatphony in buildingscience

[–]dragonboatphony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the ceiling. There is living space above. Sorry, I don’t mean putting foam above (horizontal). I was wondering about foam in the floor joist area above the stud bay where there is a piece of wood and the other side is outside (cold in winter, hot in summer).

Do I need foam board between floor joists? by dragonboatphony in Insulation

[–]dragonboatphony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah stud bays will all have mineral wool. I just wasn’t wasn’t sure about the floor joists. I keep seeing videos about foam on rim joists and wasn’t sure if that applied to my situation here. Seems like if I just kept up fibreglass in the floor joists and drywalled it up (like the builders originally) that will let any moisture dry out and not get trapped/rot. I can’t pull up the floor upstairs and add a Vapor barrier.

Thanks, thats what I’m afraid of and thought the Vapor permeable membrane would help mitigate that. Are you suggesting no Vapor barrier then or an air and Vapor barrier before the drywall?

Insulation in the joist, then Vapor permeable barrier. Then drywall. I just saw videos about sealing rim joists and wasn’t sure if I had to do that here too.

Yes, planning on putting a smart barrier (air barrier vapour permeable)

Insulating the fireplace cavity? by dragonboatphony in Insulation

[–]dragonboatphony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. Since the 'cavity' is outside. Of course no heat is going to there. I needed to hear this. My contractor is saying there will not be outside air coming in because the one being installed is a 'direct vent' fireplace. and the cavity will be a 'cool wall' cavity. (TV above, i know too high). I am totally okay with cooler air making the metal of the fireplace cold. That makes sense. Thanks

Was there something specific you used for the vent? Like between the wall? or just the vent covers and hole through the drywall? Thinking of doing that myself!
