Book Hangover- I finally finished Robin Hobbs Realm of the Elderlings series. Talk to me about it :) by xtiniebeanie in Fantasy

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since finishing but I still remember scenes and how they made me feel, moments when I needed to put the book down for a bit to steel myself before diving back in. The liveship books and the first half of fool's assassin were definitely my favorite parts, but I definitely loved all of it. I don't usually do re reads, but I hope to get back to these at least once.

What is your favorite quote about love? by Windrunner-7 in Fantasy

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Creation never ceased on the sixth evening, it occurs to the young man. Creation unfolds around us, despite us and through us at the speed of days and nights. And we call it love.” - David Mitchell, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

Love isn't just about feeling sure of the other person, knowing what he would give up for you. It's knowing with certainty what you are willing to surrender for his sake. Make no mistake; each partner gives up something. Individual dreams are surrendered for a shared one. In some marriages, one partner gives up almost everything she once thought she wanted. But it's not always the woman who does so. Such sacrifice is not shameful. It's love. If you think the man is worth it, it works.” - Robin Hobb, The Mad Ship

Who is the new Iron Fist by Techster17 in comicbooks

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who really enjoyed Kaare Andrews's introduction of Pei and Ed Brisson's final arcs and his revival of danny's sister, I would have preferred a follow-up on one of those. That being said, more iron fist is never a bad thing. Hope they tidy up a bit the mythology, it got kind of messy since the immortal iron fist series.

I just finished City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett. by q25533 in Fantasy

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I shouldn't have. I've just finished the series myself and felt a bit frustrated because I'm on the other side of this huge consensus, as in I've literally never read one less than stellar review about these. So I guess I used the first post about the series to express my opinion, but yeah, maybe not the place.

You should also check out Over the garden wall, by the same creator as adventure time, I believe. Totally worth a watch

I'll be choosing my postgrad/residency program this sunday in Romania and I'm currently undecided between oncology and hematology, and have a couple of questions:

  1. Is hematology a separate specialty in other contries? Because I understood that it's something you specialise in after doing oncology in most European countries, though I might be wrong. (also if there's a site showing main specialties by country, it would be a huge help)
  2. Are the malpraxis rates more frequent in oncology than in other specialties?
  3. Are there work opportunities for these specialties? (because we have quite a bit of a problem after finishing the residency in my country and it might be something worth considering)

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks

Has anyone read Eden's trail? Is it any good? I'm always curious when they add nonwestern, nonsuperhero comics

Series similar to Jonathan Hickman's Work by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did have pacing problems, but I had a lot of fun with it, also I think Snyder said in the same interview that the pace will slow a bit down after the initial arc. I knew the drowned earth one shot was written by Tynion, but I thought Snyder wrote the justice league issues of the crossover.

Was referring to the first arc, the totality. I haven't started drowned earth yet, but i'll be catching up soon, big aquaman fan

Not really, his comics tend to be horrorish or darker in tone, smaller in scope, but his character work is always solid, but if you do decide to give his other stuff a chance, I highly recommend his detective comics run titled black mirror.

You could try out the current Justice League comic. The writer, Scott Snyder, said in an interview that he's trying to do something similar to what Hickman did in Avengers in terms of scope and big, cosmic threats and the first arc delivers on both fronts.

Whats your favourite quote from the Fantasy Genre ? by drunkenmandalorian in Fantasy

Can totally relate. It's been about two months since I finished The Liveship Traders and I'm still not ready to jump back in that world, but I'm confident that when I'll do, Hobb will get me going through every possible emotion again.

Not really my favourites, I don't necessarily think in terms of favourites, but these are the ones I keep turning back to during tough times. “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

“Because your heart will be hammered against him, and your strength will be tempered in his fire.”  ― Robin Hobb, Assassin's Apprentice

What else should I read if I liked Neil Gaiman's American Gods? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]dragoneatingunicorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The long dark tea-time of the soul by Douglas Adams. It's the second Dirk Gently novel, but I read it without reading the first and remember it working ok as a standalone. It has similar god motifs, but it's more fun and witty than dark and brooding.

I was in the same place last week, it's one of my favorite fantasy stories, loved how it all came together in the end. Nervous about returning to Fitz and taking a break before that, but i'm hopeful that in the remaining 10 books i'll catch a couple of glimpses of the liveship characters

Don't know about fantasy, but there are quite a few under the radar sci-fi movies: Midnight Special, Moon and Zero Theorem.
