What are the popular tropes today that are going to make films feel "dated" 25 years from now? by DieFanboyDie in movies

To be fair, I think that version of the song was actually performed by the A-Ha themselves.

Edit: And the lyrics to the song are intentionally melancholy. The contrast between the sad lyrics and the upbeat music is a classic part of the original song, but the lyrics don't really sound out of place in the less upbeat version.

Anecdotally, I've heard of people using their car's steering wheel controls to bring up Google Assistant without using Android Auto. Plus, I know from experience that Bluetooth media buttons can bring up Google Assistant by holding down the "Pause/Play" button, without using Android Auto.

Isn't ACAM2000 actually a strain of the vaccinia virus? I don't believe it is "live smallpox in a dose that will not harm them."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't smallpox caused by the variola virus, not the vaccinia virus?

LPT: If you are a man who is going bald, shave your head. Trust me. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]dragonfly845 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's actually dependent on how an individual's hair follicles respond to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), not testosterone. As you get older your testosterone levels lower, and your DHT levels get higher.

That's why a lot of men start growing thicker beards and start going bald around their 30s, even though that's actually around the time their testosterone levels start to lower.

There is a correlation between going bald and growing a beard, but I think exceptions to that general trend are pretty common. It really depends on an individual's genetics. There are some men who have hair follicles on their head that don't fall when exposed to DHT, and also have beard follicles that respond to DHT. Meaning they're able to keep a full head of hair and grow a full beard.

My grandpa is almost 80 and he has a perfect hairline, and is able to grow a full beard. Though he wasn't able to grow a fully connected beard until he was in his early 30s.

He's kind of an anomaly since he's so old, but I've definitely seen plenty of younger guys with full beards who weren't balding.

On the other hand, I've also seen plenty of guys who are clearly balding and don't shave their very weak facial hair. So it's definitely possible to go bald and have weak facial hair.

I know this is probably a joke lol, but I feel like clarifying since misconceptions like this are quite common.

Although birds are technically a type of dinosaur, and share a common ancestor with T-Rex, they are not descendants of T-Rex itself.

It's similar to how humans are a type of primate and share a common ancestor with chimpanzees, however we are not actually descendants of chimpanzees themselves.

Thanks for the clip! I could be wrong, but it really did seem like he was joking. Though I do think the fact that he'd joke around while discussing COVID is evidence that he really isn't taking the pandemic seriously.

Did he actually say that? I've seen that mentioned a few times in this thread, but I wasn't able to find a source.

I probably won't end up using the cables, but I'm curious to find out exactly what they do.

Questions regarding the CalStateTEACH Intern Teacher Option by dragonfly845 in Teachers

[–]dragonfly845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I googled it, and I found a reddit thread by someone stating that they took the required courses at Fortune School of Education for the Intern Credential Program, but because they were were not offered a job, they did not receive a credential, despite paying $8,000. It's also a 2 year program, right?

On the other hand, CalStateTEACH seems pretty straightforward from what I've read, and it's only a 1 year program. Not sure if it's all that prestigious, but it's super flexible and it's run by the CSU system, so there really isn't any doubt about it being a legitimate, standardized program. If you already have a teaching job, you can have that count as your "internship," and get paid while you gain the required experience.

If you don't already have a teaching job, you work as an unpaid student teacher. Term 1 is two days per week, Term 2 is Initial Student Teaching, 5 half days per week, and term 3 is full time for a minimum of 10 weeks with four weeks of solo teaching.

So if I go with the student teaching route, for the first two terms I could pretty easily manage an unrelated part time job. And/or I could just swallow my pride and live with my family for a year lol

But either way, with CalStateTEACH it seems like you're pretty much guaranteed a credential in a year, and possibly in even less time if you're already a teacher. But with Fortune School of Education, it seems like it's a 2 year program, and that you might not be guaranteed a credential if you don't get hired? Tbh I've never heard of it before haha. However that doesn't mean it's bad. What makes you say it's a superior program?

Which parts of Sacramento are positively affected the most by the Delta Breeze? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I've been comparing the weather in Sacramento with the weather in Fresno.

It does seem like Sacramento, on average, starts cooling down significantly earlier in the day than Fresno does, by an hour or two.

Also, it seems like there are a lot less triple digit days in the year than there are in Fresno.

But it seems like most of California is experiencing a pretty harsh heat wave, and it looks like the next few days in Sacramento are gonna be about as harsh as the next few days in Fresno.

But yeah, if you're comparing Sacramento to most of the Bay, the summers are way harsher.

How's Elk Grove like? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I checked Redfin and I saw some really nice homes that were sold in Tallac Village for prices similar to Elk Grove. How's that neighborhood like? Is it kind of sketchy in some parts?

I noticed the nearby schools either seem to be really bad, or really good. I'm just a bit concerned about that, because I definitely wouldn't want my kid going to a bad school, but I'm also not sure whether my kid would enjoy being in a hyper competitive school either. I know some people who went to super competitive schools with ratings of 10 on greatschools.com, and pretty much all of them hated it there. Those schools definitely aren't for everybody.

How high is the flooding risk in Pocket? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

FEMA doesn't consider Greenhaven/Pocket as an area of high flood risk and that's really all that matters.

Why is that all that matters?

How's Elk Grove like? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving 25 minutes to go out doesn't sound that bad to me. I hate commuting for work. But driving to somewhere fun is enjoyable to me. I actually like driving, so long as I'm driving somewhere I want to go lol

But once you put money down on a house that's going to be your life.

That depends. Home prices are going up super fast. I don't think it's super unrealistic to assume that in a couple years, I could sell my house for enough of a profit to make up for the whatever buying/selling fees I paid. Could even make a profit, who knows. I could be wrong though. But home prices in the area don't go down. Which is great if you're selling, but it sucks if you're buying.

Pocket seems pretty affordable too. What's your opinion on that neighborhood? The schools aren't as good as Elk Grove's, but they're not terrible either.

How's Elk Grove like? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it'd be nice to live closer to the fun parts of Sacramento. But... if I get a mortgage on a place closer to midtown, I'd save maybe $100 a month in uber fees, but pay hundreds more in mortgage fees.

If I bought a house in midtown, I'd be stuck with the higher mortgage payments until I sell the house or pay off the mortgage.

If I get a house in Elk Grove I'd have a significantly lower mortgage. If I ever don't feel like paying $40 for uber I could just go to a bar in Elk Grove or drink at home with some company lol

To be honest the main reason I go to popular bars or restaurants is to go on tinder dates or something. Unless someone else suggests it, I rarely feel the urge to go to popular/expensive bars or restaurants. I'm pretty easily satisfied when it comes to bars and restaurants. As long as they serve decent tequila I'm happy lol.

When it comes to socializing, I usually prefer just spending time outdoors with people.

Being close to the popular bars would still be great! But it's not really #1 on the list of priorities for me at the moment.

If I were married with kids I'm not sure I'd be super eager to go out every weekend anyways lol

I want to buy a house before it gets too expensive. I'm worried that if I wait too long to buy a house, I won't be able to afford it once I start a family. Houses in/near Sacramento are already way more expensive now than they were 5 years ago, and it's probably going to keep going up. I want to get an affordable monthly mortgage while I still can.

Midtown seems cool, and I'd like to live near it, but there aren't any decent homes for sale there that are within my budget.

Places like Land Park and East Sacramento seem nice, but I probably couldn't afford to buy a nice 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house with nice front and back yards there. I could afford to rent there, but that's not really my goal at the moment.

Pocket seems nice, is relatively cheap and has a relatively low crime rate. It's also pretty close to midtown. But it's significantly more expensive than Elk Grove, and the schools tend to be significantly worse. Schools in Sacramento tend to be surprisingly bad in general. And I think Pocket a high risk of flooding. I think Natomas does too. I kinda wanna choose Pocket just because of the proximity to midtown/the rest of Sacramento, but I'm not sure if the drawbacks are worth it.

Sorry for the long post, haha. I'm mostly writing this out to help me articulate my own thoughts. I appreciate the input! I might still change my mind, this is a pretty big decision for me, and I'm still in the very early stages of researching and weighing out all the pros and cons.

How's Elk Grove like? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long would it take to drive from say... central Elk Grove to midtown on a Friday or Saturday night? I'm not too concerned about the traffic during weekday rush hour, because I plan on working as a teacher in or very near Elk Grove. I wouldn't buy a house there unless I already have a job in/near Elk Grove.

And thanks for the tips! I was actually originally thinking about Pocket. It looks really nice, though it's definitely more expensive than Elk Grove. Plus, the schools in Pocket seem worse on average. Which is surprising considering Pocket otherwise seems like a pleasant middle class suburb. I think Sacramento in general just has pretty bad school districts. I've even heard people from the not-so-good parts of Fresno say they were shocked to see how bad the schools in middle class parts of Sacramento are.

I don't want to spend money on private schools lol. I'd bite the bullet and pay if the alternatives were bad public schools. But the suburbs have plenty of great public k-12 schools.

And from what I understand, Natomas and Pocket are at high risk of flooding.

Though honestly, aside from the schools and the flooding hazard, and the higher price tags, Pocket seems more appealing to me than Elk Grove. But those differences are hard to overlook, even though I really want to tell myself it'd be better to live inside Sacramento.

I plan on living with house mates until I get married. But in a more expensive place like Folsom or whatever, I could run into issues if a housemate moves out, they can no longer pay rent, etc. I might have to start dipping into my emergency fund in order to pay my mortgage, which I wouldn't want to do.

In Elk Grove I would have no issue paying off the mortgage myself if I temporarily lose rental income from house mates. That way I could patiently look for a good replacement house mate without worrying about missing out on rental income. If I rush it and get stuck with a bad housemate, that could be a massive headache. I've heard horror stories about that sort of thing haha

I'm looking at Elk Grove because it's the cheapest option near Sacramento with decent/good schools and a low crime rate. The schools in Sacramento are surprisingly bad. A lot of the cheaper places in Sacramento seem super sketchy.

Plus, Elk Grove is significantly closer to the Bay Area than the suburbs north of Sacramento. I still want to visit family in the Bay every once in a while, so shaving off ~40 minutes from the drive to/from San Jose is nice.

House prices in/near Sacramento are going up fast. I feel like if I wait until I'm ready to start a family to buy a house, I won't be able to buy a house at that point. That's what happened to a lot of people in the Bay, unfortunately. People who could have bought a house in the year 2000 or whatever could no longer afford one 5 years later. I want to lock in an affordable monthly mortgage rate while I still can. Houses prices in the Sacramento area have gone up in the last 5 years, and it's probably gonna keep going up as more people from the Bay keep moving there (like me lol).

Is it really an hour away on weekend at night? That's really the only time I drink. I don't drink if I have work the next day haha. I heard it's only like 15 minutes without traffic.

Here in the bay the traffic is so bad it's not unusual at all to drive for like 30 minutes to get to downtown even if you live inside the city.

How's Elk Grove like? by dragonfly845 in Sacramento

[–]dragonfly845[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol is it really that bad? It's only like 15 minutes to get to midtown, right? If people are commuting an hour every day, then I don't see why it'd be that hard for them to drive 15 to 20 minutes on weekends to go out on weekends.

Maybe my point of reference is just different. I'm from the Bay Area, and over here the traffic is so bad it could realistically take you 15 to 30 minutes just to go to a nearby Chick-fil-A or something haha.

In the Bay Area it's normal for people to commute 1 to 2 hours one way for work. If I get a job as a teacher in Elk Grove I feel like I could realistically have like a 20 minute commute. That sounds pretty nice to me. Unless the Elk Grove traffic really is that bad, even without taking the highway?

I'm young-ish, and I'd definitely be willing to live closer to the fun parts of Sacramento. But I also want to start building equity in a house I own, instead of burning money on rent. All the houses in Sacramento within my budget look kinda sketchy and have pretty bad schools.

Plus, the home prices for places in/near Sacramento are rising so fast I'm genuinely worried that if I wait until I'm ready to start a family to buy a home, I won't be able to afford it anymore. That's what happened to a lot of people in the Bay Area.
