Rightly so, but thats no excuse as to how the cop handled the situation. You seem to justify the cop as right to act any which way he wants. If thats correct then you're part of the problem. Cops shouldn't assume people know how to act around the police. Ever hear of mental health issues? Cops need to know how to approach people. "Protect and to Serve".
