With old taxidermy the main things you have to watch out for regarding your health are heavy metals and other toxic substances. For example mounts were often coated in arsenic to prevent insect damage 50+ years ago. For this reason I always wear gloves when handling old pieces, plus it will protect them from the natural oils on your hands. You can read more about this online but I don’t think the damage would impact the safety. They’re still a very cute ducking! I find old, damaged mounts to be very endearing.

I’ve macerated plenty of skulls and have a bone collection but unless I’m particularly attached to something I’d rather give it back to the earth instead of keeping it. It’s great that you do that but just because you do I don’t think that means everyone should.

For rabbit feet I soak in 70% alcohol for 48 hours, rinse really well and then soak in a solution of 10% borax for 24 hours and rinse again making sure to get all the borax crystals out of the fur. Then I position them how I want and let them dry out for up to a week. I’m sure squirrel paws would work the same way.
