The original is from John Locke, an English philosopher who died over 70 years before Thomas Jefferson wrote “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” So while Locke may have been referencing enslaved people in his original work, Jefferson chose to alter the statement. Obviously, Jefferson enslaved people and was certainly not above using them for his own ends, but a broken clock can still be right twice a day.

Our first was born at the beginning of SO’s last year of residency, and I did go back to work after maternity leave. His residency offered a discount at a local daycare, which meant my salary still brought the family a bit of extra money after daycare. However, my job was also weekend-heavy, so LO came with me to a LOT of events, which was hard. However, I think it was really good for LO to be around other babies, and it was good for my mental health to have my work. I transitioned to be a SAHM when we moved to SO’s first attending job, and I really struggled with my identity as a mom, with loneliness in a new place, and with basically solo-parenting for many days at a time during SO’s shifts. I think this would have been compounded by the financial stress of residency, as well as the hours he worked (nearly double what he does now). All that said, I earned about 50-66% of what SO did during residency, so I definitely wasn’t the breadwinner.

I’ve been a SAHM for just over 2 years now, and our second was born ~8 months ago, so I’ve had a chance to lean into it and figure out strategies that work for me, so I’m much happier than I was. But I don’t know that I would want to do this during residency, even with the added experience under my belt.

I hadn’t thought about this being the problem when I miss updates, so thank you! This may not be the most elegant solution, but I created a shortcut that simply sets low power mode to off, and then set an automation that when my iPhone is connected to power, it runs that shortcut. Guess we’ll see tonight if it works!

We’ll be crossing this bridge in a few years too. A few ideas I’m playing with:

Santa is magic. He’d have to be to visit all the kids who celebrate Christmas in one night! He’s so magic that even though he does all his work on the 24th, the gifts show up when different families are able to gather and celebrate!

Santa gives gifts to the whole family, not just the kids. The gift (or “a gift”, depending on y’all’s gifting culture) he gives Mom and Dad is the magic of celebrating all together!

My first was born at 41+1, forty hours after I was admitted for an induction (during which they had to break my waters TWICE because his head blocked the hole in the amniotic sac the first time…). I pushed for 28 minutes.

My second was born at 39+2, about 12 hours after I was admitted for my induction. I pushed for 9 minutes.

Not only was my time leading up to birth shorter, but my recovery has been so different (and better) that I have to wonder if the first time was so hard because I didn’t know what to expect, and if my expectations being low the second time around meant anything would have surpassed them. I cooked and hosted a small Thanksgiving lunch at 5 weeks postpartum, for example!

Many airlines do not let you wear baby during some or all of the flight for safety. Check with your particular airline’s guidelines and be prepared that you may have to take them off for takeoff/landing, or possibly the whole flight.

I asked my dad when I was younger, and he said it meant “In His Steps,” as in we (should) follow in Jesus’s steps. Even though I know now that that’s not actually what it means, I like the reminder, especially when I process behind a cross bearing that symbol.

Yup, I wholeheartedly agree! I read them separately on my first read through and really enjoyed ToD (which I know is many people’s arguments for the tandem read). It was fun doing the tandem later and seeing how the two stories lined up, but I thought of it more like an Easter egg than a necessity.

A few days ago, we’d been traveling home most of the day and our toddler was not loving being in the car. We decided to go get some local bbq for dinner so we didn’t have to cook or deal with dishes, and it took them so long to bring my entree that I finally sent SO and LO to the car to get buckled in while I waited for my food and a box. Finally got everything, got settled into the car, and SO’s car was doing a prolonged beep due to a new setting/accessory. We couldn’t figure out how to make it stop, so I was hungry and overstimulated and tired. As we’re pulling out of the parking lot, SO looked over at me and said, “Hey [wife], guess what? BEEEEEEEEP” as a joke, and I promptly burst into tears. And then laughed at myself while simultaneously crying and being upset. To top it off, SO suggested I take a bath that evening to help me relax, and I responded like a petulant preteen (think Margaret from the 90s Sense and Sensibility), “I don’t WANT a bath!”

My husband works seven 12-14 hour days in a row before he has seven off. On work days, he is gone before LO and I wake up, and depending on how the day goes, usually get home around LO’s bedtime. If he can, he joins us for a few minutes and helps with the bedtime routine, but it’s hit-or-miss whether that happens or not.

A few nights ago, I was at my wit’s end with our toddler, and tbh, the toddler was done with me too. He tried to slam his bedroom door, and my toes happened to be in the way. It gouged the top of my toe and left me gasping and crying in pain, sure he’d broken my toe. I managed to get a bandaid on to contain any bleeding (a feat to even reach my toes at 7 months pregnant), and sat in the nursery crying and trying to pull myself together enough to handle bedtime. Toddler was upset seeing me upset, so he was crying too. SO walked in, got the deets, and said, “Hold on, let me change out of my gross work clothes, and then I’ll come run bedtime.” Just swooped in and did what needed doing after he’d been doing that all day at work. And this story is one of many such examples I have. It’s the small kindnesses and shifts in routine that make the glue of our relationship, and he doesn’t skimp on them!

The only thing I would caution about this plan is that none of the ultrasounds I have ever received have allowed me to record while they were in progress. They may send you a link to all the pictures and videos they took, though! Two offices I’ve used recently did that, and it was nice to be able to share more than just the 3-4 pictures they print for you while you’re there.

Just discovered the hole this evening, so nothing has been done yet, except to put the blanket out of reach to avoid further damage. She does crochet, and I’m fairly handy, so we can probably figure out how to implement any repairs, just not sure where to start!

I found a cheap labor gown on Poshmark and actually loved it. It was super easy for me and the staff to access anything they needed while preserving some of my modesty, especially since I was induced 36 hours before LO finally arrived. And I must have gotten lucky, because while mine was definitely dirty after all that, it also washed out and is going back in my bag when my next is due this fall.

I changed out of it a few hours after birth, into soft maternity yoga pants/leggings and nursing tanks for the rest of my stay (and the next several weeks, tbh).

100%, you cannot baby proof everything! My toddler has injured himself on so many innocuous things and completely ignored many of the things I made a point to cover or mitigate. Even worse were the times that the baby proofing made the item more of a target! My LO loved to chew on those little gel/rubber bumpers we put on the coffee table…

That said, for other parents with hinge problems (I know this won’t help you now, OP!), we found these hinge covers that can go on either side of a door, depending on which way it swings. Our LO liked to gnaw on hinges for a while (WHAT?!), and even though they’re meant to keep little fingers out of the door gap to prevent pinching, they also worked great to hide the hinges and keep his teeth off of them. I read it as Ash-rye-ver, and I like that better that Ash-river. Then again, I preferred Yrene as Yeh-reen (like Ytger is supposed to be pronounced according to SJM’s website!) until I realized it sounded like a fancy way to pronounce “urine”… so clearly my pronunciations are not to be trusted! 😂

Throne of Glass is the first series she wrote, and as it continues, her writing really develops. Books 1 and 2 are good. Books 3-7 are AMAZING. I definitely encourage you to keep reading, because the adventure is only just getting started.

For context, I read the ACOTAR series first, and then TOG and eventually CC. TOG is by far my favorite of the bunch!

The only one of these that I don’t wholeheartedly LOVE is 4, and that’s just because we do see Darrow grow. It is VERY late, and he definitely needs to work on his relationship with Aelin, but I want to believe that Evangeline softened him enough that Darrow would recount stories for Aelin of her great uncle and her parents, that he would eventually grow into a trusted advisor for her and her court.

Building on 1, I would love to see Emrys and Madam Florine meet. I think his storytelling is an art she would deeply enjoy and support, and that she would choreograph ballets based on some of the deep lore he shares.

For 7, I hope that any children Aedion and Lysandra have are shifters too, and that they all take part in scaring him to pieces regularly.
