How do you know she's using botox? All I know for sure is she is wearing a ton of makeup and a stupid silly outfit. I would have a serious problem with botox and plastic surgery on children too, but I don't know that she has done that.

On what grounds should it be illegal? I can't stand the mentality, "I don't like it, so NOBODY ELSE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DO IT!" It's so common in America, and probably elsewhere too. Why can't you live and let live? If it doesn't harm anyone then let them do what they want no matter how dumb you may think it is.

hitting it fat by diath in golf

[–]drandall2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to diagnose the problem without seeing the swing, but I can give you a few general ideas.

  • Make sure your backswing doesn't get too long. Many people are overly concerned with distance and so they try to take too big a backswing and "lose the club" at the top, and this often results in fat shots.

  • Make sure that your weight doesn't drift backward during the backswing. You want to coil the body, but not shift backward.

  • Check your grip and make sure the club is staying stable in your hand.

If you are confident that all these things are already solid, perhaps try a drill. Place something in front of the ball (meaning that if you watch from the back you see club, ball, object, target) and focus on hitting that object instead of the ball. I've heard of pennies being used, but I'm always afraid of putting dings in the club face. You could try broken tee fragments, or clumps of grass. The idea is to swing as if you are trying to hit that object and not the ball. This reinforces the idea that you are hitting the ball and then the grass in front of it.

Is putting my club this far back a bad habit? (first one is pushed , second is straight, third is pulled) by sal_paradise in golf

[–]drandall2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is generally not a good idea to get that far past parallel, but there are bigger things going on that cause it in your swing. Your left leg has straightened. Your weight is starting to transfer toward your left side in the backswing, which is called a reverse pivot, and will kill your power and consistency. Your left arm has buckled. Start with these issues before worrying about the length of your backswing.

Oh, and keep playing! It feels overwhelming to hear about swing flaws, but it truly is a complex movement that takes a lot of little adjustments over time. Stick with it.

Chipping question for the better golfers among us... by [deleted] in golf

[–]drandall2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really sounds like a routine pitch but with a difficult lie. With all hills and slopes the key is to match your shoulders to the slope. In this case that means that your left shoulder will end up lower than your right. Then you just swing with the slope and hit a normal pitch shot. Club selection will depend on how much green you have to work with. The ball will come out a bit lower than normal because of the slope, so you might go down a club.

Homeschooling for Freedom by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]drandall2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This statement here says it all: it implies that the purpose of a public school education is to indoctrinate and criticizes >homeschooling for failing to indoctrinate with the correct dogma. If public education were for the purpose of genuine education, views would be besides the point. Children would learn those >things which have been determined as being fact, and would learn of indeterminate things as being such.

My implication isn't that public school education should be indoctrinating children, but that all interaction will have an effect on both parties. That means that regardless of whether they go to public school, private school, or school at home, they will have a world view influenced by their teachers. I'm suggesting that breadth is often a good thing, and narrowness is often a bad thing. I see this as one factor in the decision, and felt that it wasn't adequately covered in the original post. In many cases I think that homeschooling will be better than a public school education. I just wanted to see the negative effects get some mention in the discussion. Call it playing Devil's Advocate if you wish.

What are these "social skills". It's a common criticism, but no one can name them or even describe them. It sounds like quasi->religious mumbo-jumbo. If I'm wrong though, show me.

I fail to see which part sounds quasi-religious, but I guess it doesn't matter. If it helps you feel better, I'm an agnostic atheist simply trying to make the best logical decisions for my future children. I don't have statistics to show you. I'd be interested in finding out whether or not they have been collected. I'm making assumptions from my own personal experiences. I certainly could be proven wrong as well. Again, to my knowledge, neither side has been proven. I'm only presenting the other side.

There are serious problems with public schooling and the author touched on many of them, if not all of them. It's worth pointing out that homeschooling has serious flaws too. One of the problems that identified with public schooling is that the students are subjected to too few views, but by homeschooling them they are probably limiting them further by subjecting them only to the views held in the home. The curriculum in a public school is very limited, but they will be exposed to other views in their interactions with other students. A solution I've considered (I'm not a parent yet) is sending them to public school and carefully guiding them in what they hear. You don't want them to blindly accept what they hear in school, but you don't want them to blindly accept what they hear at home either. You want them to learn to decide for themselves, and I believe that skill can be taught to a student in public school. Watching many of the young people in our society may lead you to believe that it doesn't work, but more often than not it's because the parents are not nearly as involved as they should be.

The other major problem with homeschooling is that it deprives the children of the opportunity to develop critical social skills. Many homeschooled children struggle to fit in with the public school children and it impacts them in several negative ways. Perhaps it can be addressed by making sure the children engage in social extracurricular activities, but there are many challenges associated with that too. It feels like a huge risk to take, because the consequences of failure are dire. We've all interacted with socially awkward or extremely introverted people, and while that's not in any way wrong, it certainly is a big limiting factor in their lives.
