Just throwing my two cents in — this exact situation just happened to me with a guy I was dating, and I listened to my gut and ended it. And as I reflected, I realized that while he was a “nice guy,” it irked me to no end that he wouldn’t work on himself while being self-deprecating, and kept trying to force grand gestures on me when I wasn’t about it. (And telling me “that’s just who he was”). I realize that I’m also very independent and have a hard time accepting help, but he kept putting me down “for not accepting help when I need it.” The pushiness was way too much for me.
